GYPSY Jokers from across Australia have gathered in Adelaide for a funeral which would be illegal under new anti-bikie laws introduced by the State Government.

The laws – the first of their kind in Australia apart from the federal anti-terror legislation – have been attacked by lawyers and civil liberatarians as draconian and an erosion of individual rights, particularly freedom of association. The laws contain provisions that members of outlaw motorcycle clubs can only associate with direct family members such as their parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents and children. Anyone who breaches the laws – whether they are bikies or individuals having contact with bikies can be jailed for up to five years.

The bikies were farewelling club president Wayne “Chiller” McGrath, 42, a father of four and part-owner of four tattoo parlours, who suffered a fatal heart attack last week while exercising on a treadmill at his Virginia home.

UNITED NATIONS: The UN General Assembly adopted a US-drafted resolution today condemning denials of the Holocaust, weeks after Iran sponsored a meeting dominated by speakers questioning the Nazis’ extermination of 6 million Jews in World War 2.

The resolution, co-sponsored by more than 100 countries, including all Western nations, was approved by consensus, without a vote. Iran disassociated itself from the action, calling the resolution a political exercise that Israel would exploit against Palestinians.

THE first stage of the State Government’s three-pronged legislative attack on outlaw bikie gangs and their associates comes into force today.

Gang members involved in brawls or those threatening witnesses will be charged with new offences under the Public Order Offences Act, which carries penalties of up to 10 years’ jail or fines of up to $10,000.

The new charges available to police are Riot, Affray and Violent Disorder.
