STAFF at two northern suburbs hotels were assaulted by a gang of armed men this morning.

In the first incident, staff leaving the Brahma Lodge Hotel about 2.30am were confronted by three men carrying a baseball bat and iron bars. One of the staff was assaulted.

The men, all of aboriginal appearance, escaped empty handed, but about five minutes later three people fitting the same description entered the gaming room of the Old Spot hotel, Salisbury Heights.

A WELLAND man was acting in “self defence” when he fatally stabbed his mother’s defacto partner with a kitchen knife on Thursday night, the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court has heard.

Lazaros David Hajistassi is charged with the murder of 48-year old James Vincent Farquhar, who died from stab wounds at the Frederick St home at Welland.

The court heard Hajistassi had confronted Mr Farquhar over an ongoing domestic dispute with his mother when the fight broke out just after 11.30pm.

A MAN was arrested at Ingle Farm this morning and charged with aggravated robbery over a terrifying gunpoint raid on a bank at Glynde last Thursday.

Detectives from Operation Counteract, investigating armed robberies, believe they know the identities of the three other men wanted for the highly organised hoist.

Bank staff were terrorised when three men smashed their way into the staff area of the National Australia Bank, behind the customer service counter.

The staff were threatened with a semi-automatic handgun before the men left the scene with cash.

VICTORIA’S police chief is warning SA’s tough new anti-bikie gang laws will lead to increased conflict between police and bikies and drive them underground.

Police Commissioner Christine Nixon says the laws will “merely drive the visible appearance of organised motorcycle gangs (OMCGs) underground, where the criminal activity will continue to function”.

Australia’s oldest mosque is getting a $65,000 grant from Adelaide City Council to fund the repairs to one of its minarets.

The mosque in Gilbert Street in the city was built in the late 1880s, with minarets added in 1903.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison says it is the first time the Council has funded refurbishment work on a mosque.
