A BLIND man who won a lawsuit after his guide dog was refused entry into a taxi is happy with the result – even though it means he lost a potential windfall.

Peter Ellson was today awarded $2300 in compensation and damages after the Equal Opportunity Tribunal found he had been discriminated against by a cabbie working for PBL Taxis in February 2006.

However, Mr Ellson could have made $25,000 more by settling out of court.

A WELLAND man was acting in “self defence” when he fatally stabbed his mother’s defacto partner with a kitchen knife on Thursday night, the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court has heard.

Lazaros David Hajistassi is charged with the murder of 48-year old James Vincent Farquhar, who died from stab wounds at the Frederick St home at Welland.

The court heard Hajistassi had confronted Mr Farquhar over an ongoing domestic dispute with his mother when the fight broke out just after 11.30pm.

Australia’s oldest mosque is getting a $65,000 grant from Adelaide City Council to fund the repairs to one of its minarets.

The mosque in Gilbert Street in the city was built in the late 1880s, with minarets added in 1903.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison says it is the first time the Council has funded refurbishment work on a mosque.

Danish embassy staff removed after ‘imminent’ threat

DENMARK has moved staff from its embassies in Algeria and Afghanistan to secret safe locations because of an imminent threat, Foreign Ministry officials say.

The threats were “so concrete” action had to be taken, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Erik Laursen.

They are believed to be related to the republication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb in his turban. It was one of 12 drawings of the Prophet that sparked riots in the Muslim world in 2006 after originally being printed in a Danish newspaper in 2005.

GANGS of Middle Eastern youths have threatened to bash staff in popular city and suburban nightclubs.

Adelaide hoteliers say the notorious “Middle East Boys” – or MEB – have said they’d find staff members’ homes to exact a violent revenge after being refused entry to bars and pubs.One hotelier, who declined to be identified for fear of retribution, said gangs were barred from most Adelaide pubs but members occasionally slipped into late-night clubs undetected.
