Swastika spurs war of words

DAISY HILL: A Daisy Hill man is refusing to take down a swastika flag on his property despite mounting concern from residents and Logan city officials.

The 43-year-old, who describes himself as a "white nationalist'' and opted not to be named, said he put the flag up as a display of white pride.

He rejected any suggestion his decision was a support for Nazism and said he had not received any complaints from neighbours.

But Logan and District RSL president Ken Heard said the flag could generate bad memories for many people in the community and said it should be removed.

"I think a lot of people, especially the older generation, would find it very offensive,'' Mr Heard said.

Logan City councillor Darren Power (Division 10) backed the RSL president but said council had no way to force the flag's removal.

"I think this guy is sending the wrong message out and I think you will find that he's upsetting the people he's trying to support,'' Cr Power said.

"It's got no place in Australia where we are trying to show the world that we're a place of tolerance. I guess that tolerance is also allowing freedom of speech, but it can go too far.''

The man, who has lived in the suburb for 14 years, said he would not remove the flag regardless of what people said. "I've been a white nationalist most of my life, I'm conscious of my surroundings and the colour of my people,'' he said. "It's my choice, it's not yours, not everybody else's and I'm not forcing it on anyone.''

"It's part of freedom of speech. It's on my property and like I said, I'm proud of it and no one's going to make me take it down.''

A nearby resident who did not wish to be named said he was concerned about the flag flying in his street.

"I often walk past the house and the flag has been there for about a month. It just doesn't gel with me.''

The Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission said it was not illegal to fly a swastika flag, but anyone who felt vilified could lodge a complaint.

Under Queensland state law, there is nothing they can do. I used to live in  Logan City many years ago and put my own swastika flag up in my window. Within a day I had the state government ordering me to take it down with empty threats of calling the State Police. The State Police then showed up and ordered me to take it down. I asked if I was in breach of any laws and they threatened me with the Federal Police then left.

I rang the Federal Police and told them the situation. They said that if I had put the flag up there to offend any particular persons, I would be charged with Racial Vilification, but since I did not display the flag for the purposes of vilification or offence, there was nothing anyone could do. The Fed on the phone then had a good laugh at the expense of the State Government and the State Police who had no powers in the matter and no right to interfere with my life.

Im an old outlaw and I rode the Beenleigh Woodridge Gold Coast area. He look's familiar, about my age so who knows? A lot of us EX Old School Bikers got out of the Outlaw scene when it became like a Mexican Bandit posy.

Good on him I will try and look into it. Sorry I have been away I have a lot on my plate.
