Union Slams FNB Over Bursaries

Cape Town - Trade union Solidarity has launched a campaign to pressure First National Banking into scrapping what it says is a "racial" allocation of education bursaries for employees' children. The union said on Thursday the bank had decided White employees would not qualify for the bursaries. It was reacting to the November edition of FNB's employees newsletter TreeTalk, in which the bank offered the support to African, Indian, Coloured and Chinese [ ... they are not indigenous to SA !] employees earning less than R100 000 a year.

"White employees who struggle and earn less than R100 000 are simply excluded, purely on the basis of their race," union spokesperson Dirk Hermann said in a statement. "This is surely the most insensitive Christmas present an employer could give a certain portion of its employees. The White employees at FNB are getting a black Christmas stocking that they are not allowed to open, because they aren't black."

He said members of the public could complain to FNB through Solidarity's website at www.solidarity.co.za and join a Facebook protest. He said Solidarity urged FNB clients and the public to continue the campaign until the racial criteria were removed from the bursary allocation. He said the focus of FNB's employee support trust, which would administer the bursaries, was children at primary school level, who could not be said to be beneficiaries of Apartheid.

The right approach would be to let anyone who earned less than R100 000 qualify for study aid. FNB spokespeople were not immediately available for comment. A switchboard operator at the bank's Sandton head office said she believed they were in a meeting, and that they intended to issue a statement.

The November 9 to 13 issue of TreeTalk tells employees that if they are struggling to meet the demands of rising education costs, "then we may just have some good news for you. FNB is commit[t]ed to ensuring education for all, and as part of this initiative, offers financial assistance to black employees (as defined by the FirstRand staff BEE Scheme : African, Indian, Coloured and Chinese) earning R100 000 or less per annum."

FNB And Solidarity Reach Settlement Over Bursaries For Black Staff Only

White staff members of FNB who were excluded from a FirstRand black economic empowerment trust will in future, by means of an alternative bursary scheme, have access to the same benefits offered to black employees by the black empowerment trust. The CEO of FNB, Michael Jordaan, and the deputy general secretary of Solidarity, Dirk Hermann, held discussions after which it was announced that a settlement between the parties had been reached.

A dispute arose between Solidarity and FNB after the bank had invited all staff, through its newsletter Treetalk, to apply for bursaries, but had also said that only black staff members would qualify. Solidarity launched a massive internet campaign against FNB. The campaign included Facebook groups, blogs, Twitter, a website and directs e-mails to FNB. About 1 000 people lodged complaints with FNB over the bursary scheme and several people closed or threatened to close their FNB accounts if a solution was not found.

"What we experienced here, is the power of community activism. It is a new type of politics of which the full power has not yet been discovered. New technologies make this type of activism only more effective," said Dirk Hermann, deputy general secretary of Solidarity. The bursary scheme formed part of a larger black economic empowerment [racism] transaction of the FirstRand group.

In terms of the agreement reached between Solidarity and FNB, employees excluded from the FirstRand Trust would have equal access to an alternative bursary scheme. The criteria for awarding benefits from the FirstRand Trust would be the same as the criteria from awarding benefits to White employees who were excluded from the FirstRand Trust. The talks were held in a very positive spirit and FNB indicated from the start that they did not want to discriminate against employees.

In the settlement agreement, FNB states that it has a variety of other bursary schemes to support staff members. According to FNB, their policy has always been to award bursaries based on merit and not to discriminate against certain groups. According to the agreement, FNB undertakes not to discriminate against White employees in future when it comes to the awarding of bursaries.

Solidarity is delighted about the agreement. There can be no discrimination against people based on their race if help is being given based on need. Companies often go further than the law requires. No stipulation in any black empowerment legislation requires that only black people should be part of an empowerment transaction.

The staff members of all the companies in the FirstRand are, however, affected by the FirstRand Trust. Solidarity will now write to other companies in the FirstRand group, such as Outsurance, Wesbank and Momentum, to find out whether their White employees will also receive assistance from alternative bursary schemes.

I'll Send Tsotsis To Kill You

Pretoria - A security guard at the gate of a Midrand security estate allegedly threatened a resident of the estate after he confronted the guard about his behaviour. "I'll send the tsotsis [niggers] to kill you," the guard at Midstream estate apparently told Fanie Kok when he confronted him about his "inappropriate behaviour" toward his daughter.

Fanie Kok said on Thursday that he considers the guard's words to be a death threat, and he has made a statement about the incident at the Olifantsfontein police station. [ ... no use Fanie, resolve it your way]. The incident occurred on December 28 when Kok's daughter, Liza, and her friend wanted to drive out of the estate in order to fill up the friend's car.

"When they reached the Old Kent gate, Liza (who was sitting on the passenger seat) called the guard over so that she could put her fingerprint on the machine which would open the gate. The guard, however, refused to walk to the car and said she should walk to where he was. After she got home and told me what had happened, I went to the gate to confront the guard about his inappropriate behaviour. As far as I'm concerned, the guards at this estate should always walk to the vehicles to help residents and visitors."

"I explained this in no uncertain terms to the guard, and said I would be mentioning the matter to his superiors". He said it was then that the guard threatened his life. "I'm taking this death threat very seriously and I have reason to believe he'll carry out the threat," said Kok. He sent an e-mail about the incident to Suiker Britz, manager of the estate. On Thursday Britz said the incident is being investigated.

Police spokesperson, Lesibane Molokomme, confirmed that Kok had notified the police of the incident.

Farmers Ask Zuma To Help

Pretoria - A group of farmers in Pretoria on Saturday demanded that government help "stop farm murders" and pleaded their case in an open letter to President Jacob Zuma. "Surely, if politicians and senior officials can publicly direct police officials to use firearms to prevent crime or becoming the victims ... the very same principle should apply to law-abiding citizens who do not enjoy the luxury of police protection," said Transvaal Landbou Unie SA (TLU SA) chief executive Bennie Van Zyl.

He accused the police of being corrupt and said government failed in its responsibility to protect its citizens. "We don't hear it, we don't see it". The group was calling for a formal summit with government to renew safety initiatives that former president Nelson Mandela implemented during his term.

In the open letter to Zuma, Van Zyl spoke about "the threat against farmers, their families and their employees. The producers of food and fibre are threatened by vicious criminals responsible for committing the most hideous crimes against mankind displaying no respect for age or gender," he said. Johan van Biljon, chairperson of the organisation's youth divison said since 2006 there had been a systematic increase in farm murders.

About 50 people attended the ceremony - most of them bearded men wearing shorts and khaki shirts. While wiping away tears, the group laid calla lilies at empty coffins and on a white cross in commemoration. "They say we [are] ready for the [Fifa] World Cup, but in the rural areas it's a different story," said Van Biljon, expressing concern about rural safety.

"The unabated continuance of the most brutal violence against the producers of food and fibre, their families and their employees is not only targeting a specific sector of the economy in a manner to which none other can compare," he said. "But it seriously places South Africa's already-eroded strategic asset of food security at risk". The youth division were expected to hand over the statement to police representatives as they did not attend the ceremony to receive it.

Farmers Arrested For Defending Themselves

Koppies, Free State. Journalist Charles Smith of Volksblad newspaper reports that twenty-three year old Afrikaner farmer Chris Grobler and his foreman Eugene Lloyd both were illegally arrested and locked up for 48 hours in the Free State this past weekend without being booked in at the official police registry -- for defending themselves against two men who had attacked them with knives. The two Afrikaners had made citizen's arrests [ ... the Whites in this country dont have a police force anymore - but they come quick if they can put Whites in prison] of the two attackers and the police were alerted – but only showed up a day later. And instead of arresting the attackers, the two white men were arrested when they went to the police station to make formal statements – and then their dockets were 'lost' for 48 hours while they were locked up in a large holding pen with dozens of aggressive black detainees.

The two white men were threatened in the overcrowded holding pens of the Koppies police station by black inmates who started singing and dancing very loudly, said his father Christo. The two young white men were held illegally : three attorneys hired by the parents have established that the two Afrikaners initially had been held without any mention of their names being registered in the police-registry at Koppies police station. "The dossier was ' missing ' and there were no entries in the incident book ...' said the father. Moreover, the police officers even denied that they had even been to the farm, where Mr Grobler and the foreman had made citizen's arrests of two men who had assaulted the two white men with knives on Sunday.

The two men were released only after two farm workers who had witnessed the assaults and the arrival of the police that Monday, had submitted signed and sworn statements to the police, did the cops even acknowledge the fact that the two white men were in a holding pen with scores of black detainees. The police had been called twice over the weekend after a drunken ex-farm worker had shown up there with a comrade and started attacking the residents with knives but only showed up on Monday when two constables showed up. [ ... weird isn`t it ?]

"My wife wanted to know why they didn't show up on Sunday when the two men were making all the trouble, and she was told 'don't behave like a white woman' ... said Grobler. The commander of the Heuningspruit police station also told the father that his son 'should have stood still to be stabbed' and then the attacker would have been in the cells instead of Chris...' Allegedly the two arrested black knifemen had lodged charges of assaults against the farmer and his foreman, said police captain Msisitheki Selima of the Kroonstad police; and Volksblad also quoted a claim from another cop that the police 'have a rule' that "anyone accused of anything should be locked up for 48 hours.... "

When the young farmer was asked to go to the police station on Monday with his foreman to make a formal statement about the details surrounding the citizen's arrest of the two armed men which the police had been taken away by the two constables earlier that day, these crime-victims were arrested instead and held illegally for 48 hours. ANC Tramples Name-list Of Mudered Farmers

Angry ANC-officials tore up the name-lists of several thousand murdered white farm-attack victims – then threw the documents in the gutter and trampled on them in front of their Luthule House headquarters in Johannesburg during a vicious confrontation with a small group of peaceful Afrikaner protestors. A day earlier, ANC youth league leader juluis mudlema had also threatened to have the Afrikaner protestors shot down if they dared to show up...

The small delegation of about 100 Afrikaners which arrived at the ANC headquarters on Friday was led by Afriforum  Youth forum leader Ernst Roets, AfriForum's managing head Kallie Kriel, and the Afrikaans singer/activists Steve Hofmeyer, Sean Else and Gerrie Pretorius.

A day earlier, four Afriforum members held a personal meeting with mudlema and his office to arrange their delegation the following day – but after mudlema had angrily demanded that they drop the formal hate-speech charges against him, he also threatened to 'have the same thing happen to you as did with the Inkatha Freedom Party in 1994 (when 31 IFP protestors were shot dead and 300 were injured). On Friday, the small group of peaceful Afrikaner protestors were met by a double-wall of grim-faced black cops who refused them any access to the building.

In a meeting between Roets and mudlema a day earlier -- the latter had made pre-conditions before he would meet the small group of Afrikaners – demanding that they withdraw their official charge of hate-speech in connection with his constant public repetitions of the hate-speech chant "Kill the Boer'. The Afrikaners however refused to withdraw their formal charge with the SA Human Rights Commission. Mudlema then refused them access to Luthuli house and threatened Roets : "If you protest at Luthuli House tomorrow, the same thing which happened to the Inkatha Freedom Party (in 1994 at the building then named Shell House, when IFP-members were murdered by ANC-security guards) will also happen to you, Roets said he and three other Afriforum members were told by mudlema.

When Roets asked mudlema exactly 'what he meant by that statement', the anc youth league  leader – who is widely viewed as the future president of South Africa – told the Afriforum members 'to come and see what will happen to you'... In reaction to this violence-threat AfriForum leaders decided to proceed with the small protest with about 100 people at the nearby Mary Fitzgerald Square instead of all going to Luthuli House. Among the peaceful protestors waving "Stop Malema' placards were relatives of murdered farmers, reports Beeld newspaper.

Roets warned the tense, small group of peaceful Afrikaners that things could get dangerous : "this isn't a kindergarten where you play cowboys and crooks, real people get murdered when one makes statements such as those made by mudlema's 'Kill the Boer chants'. After this meeting a small core of young Afrikaner men went to Luthuli house to hand over the name-lists of murdered Afrikaner farmers together with their petition.

The march by the Afrikaners was banned at the last minute; nobody would take delivery of the list – and then it nearly got very ugly as police intervened. The precious list of the murdered Afrikaners was eventually tossed from the anc headquarters and trampled into the gutter. This infuriated the Afrikaner civil rights movement to such an extent that they have lodged formal charges of hatespeech against mudlema – and decided to hand-deliver the name-list of the many hundreds of Afrikaner farmers and their relatives to the youth leader himself.

However the cops formed a solid wall against the Afrikaner supporters who wanted to deliver the document to the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg. In the end only five representatives were still at the wall of cops - trying to deliver the document while their group of around 200 supporters were behind them in Mary Fitzgeald square. Which is just as well : because if some of the hotheads there have been at Luthuli House, there would have been serious trouble, it is being reported.

"We are here on behalf of the Boere, and Lucky Dube," said superstar Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmyer, proffering the document to an ANC representative, who refused to accept it. Shortly after, Kallie Kriel, the head of Afriforum proper, tried to enter the building – which is when waiting police stepped in smartly, forming a barrier between him and the door. That is when the finger-waving and shouting started.

After Kriel hurled the document over the heads of the police and small crowd, and right through the open doors of the building, it came saling back onto the pavement. Therethe precious name-list was stepped on and kicked into the gutter in what will be interpreted – whether or not it was so intended – as disrespect for those many thousands who were killed in farm attacks, the names of whom were included in the document.

"What we've seen here was nothing less than intimidation," Roets told an impromptu media conference through an open window as the group got back into their vehicle. "They were not even prepared to listen to the victims in South Africa, people who are being murdered on the farms. "The ANC and the Youth League do not even care about them." Hofmeyr chose a more poignant turn of phrase. "I didn't expect anything civil..." he told journalists. "I believe we've slipped the moorings of a wonderful ideal. It's a bit sad."

Afriforum says the failure to deliver the memorandum isn't a particular problem, as it was only a courtesy before mudlema gets to read about its grievances in court papers. The organisation has already started the process of lodging a complaint that it believes will lead to an Equality Court hearing on hate speech.
