The Nazi's gave Alter only bread made from flour and sawdust to eat for the next 4 years. Here he met his brother that got ten years older in one year. He also got whipped 15 strokes for trying to bribe a Nazi, but got up the next morning to work. He was then moved to the Brande work camp where he was forced to shower all night. Miraculously, Alter survived 5 concentration camps to tell his sad tale to spellbound students.

Doctors who examined him shortly after the "liberation" told him they didn't expect him to live for more than a few years, but here he is, 82 years old - it must have been a miracle. Alter now wants you to buy his book where you can read about his miracle.

German Court Pledges 500 Million Euros For Jewish Ghetto Workers

Former Jewish ghetto workers can expect old-age pension payments worth a total of 500 million euros, a German court announced on Wednesday. The Essen court said that German welfare authorities are to run a backdated audit of pension claims, based on a 2009 court ruling in favor of three Holocaust survivors who had demanded a pension after being forced to work by the Nazis.

At the time, the federal court had decided that Nazi victims were entitled to pension payments for work they were forced to carry out in ghettos during World War II. The ruling was also applied to people who had only been paid by receiving food and other gratuities for their work. Until then, such claims had failed in cases where people did not receive wages from their German occupiers.

The Nazis had forced Jewish residents of many German and eastern European cities to live in ghettos, which were cordoned-off and starvation-ravaged zones, before being sent to death camps. [ ... where millions survived - it must have been a miracle]

The social welfare court in Essen is responsible for all pension claims from former ghetto residents who now live in Israel. The court estimated that roughly two thirds of all claims would now be approved. Until now, 90 per cent of all claims were rejected. In total, the pension authorities are faced with around 70,000 claims, of which 30,000 emanate from Israel.

During World War II, the Nazis extensively exploited forced labor because a large part of the German male workforce was doing military service.

Charlene Schiff

Charlene Schiff, who is really Shulamit Perlmutter, was only a young girl when she escaped from the Nazi's by hiding in a river. They stayed in the river for days. She then met up with a group of stragglers from other surrounding ghettos. While they hid in a hay bale, they were found by a mob that used pitchforks to attack them, for no reason at all. All the Jews hid in the same haystack. They killed everyone in the haystack except Schiff. Schiff was forced to eat insects and make fire with damp stones in the forests to stay alive.

Charlene does not know why she survived the Holocaust. In her town with 5,000 Jews, there were only two survivors. Schiff is now the only one left because the other passed away in 2002. Because there were no actual records of what happened, Schiff has to rely on rumors to know what happened to her family.

Pepkale Dodyk

Pepkale was only 3 years old when the evil Nazi's and Ukranian police invaded her town. So her and dozens of others fled into a cave with disease-carrying bats. But the Germans raided the cave, and captured Pepkale's family. The other Jews escaped through a hole they had dug. In the rocks. With their bare hands.

The Germans wanted the Ukranians to shoot Pepkale. But Usher offered his hidden stash of gold and silver to the Ukranians. So the Ukranians fired 5 shots over the heads of the Jews. They let Pepkale, her mother, and Usher live, but they killed the aunt and cousin. So the Jews found another cave. They lived in the cave for 2 years, sleeping 22 hours per day, to conserve energy, because the 38 people did not have any food.

The Ukranians tried to murder them by sealing the entrance to the cave, time and time again. The Ukranians were apparently unfamiliar with fire, and how it might adversely affect people hiding in a cave. Then a message in a bottle came, and Pepkale and the 37 other Jews came out of the cave.

Austria To Contribute 6mn To Auschwitz Renovation

Austria is to give a six million-Euro subsidy towards the renovation of Auschwitz concentration camp memorial site in Poland, it was announced today (Tues). People's Party (ÖVP) Finance Minister Josef Pröll said : "Our plan is to contribute around six million Euros. That's the benchmark."

Pröll stressed this would be exactly a tenth of the amount of Germany's subsidies for the planned renovation of the site which is visited by around 700,000 people every year. Germany has around ten times more citizens than Austria.

The minister remained tight-lipped about which department the money would come from. "Details still need to be discussed," he said. The Auschwitz camp was one of the Nazi's main forced labour and death camps. Up to three million [ ... although the board now says 1.5 million ] Jews, Roma, Nazi opponents and disabled people died at the site between 1940 and 1945.

All Holocaust compensation and restitution payments are protected by 1994 federal legislation that excludes them from calculations relating to eligibility for federal benefits. The legislation (h.r. 1873 or public law 103-286) stated that payments made to individuals because of their status as victims of Nazi persecution are to be excluded from income and resources in determining both eligibility for and the amount of benefits or services to be provided under any Federal or federally assisted program which provides benefits or services based on need such as, but not limited to, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, food stamps and Federally subsidized Housing programs.
