Legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks remarked last month he wouldn't be able to make his 1974 classic Blazing Saddles today.

The film centres around a black sheriff dealt the unenviable task of going to work in a racist Old West town. It's outrageous, offensive, and laugh-out-loud funny. But Brooks says it would be too much for the overbearing wowsers who have become the thought police of 2017.

"We have become stupidly politically correct, which is the death of comedy," he said.

"It's OK not to hurt the feelings of various tribes and groups. However, it's not good for comedy. Comedy has to walk a thin line, take risks. Comedy is the lecherous little elf whispering into the king's ear, always telling the truth about human behaviour." Today, the type of confronting comedy Brooks did best would no doubt be shouted down by the Twitter lynchmobs hellbent on "de-platforming" anyone who holds a view that challenges their own sheltered little world.

But what's more alarming is that our governments seem to want to legislate to ensure this can happen.

NT News cartoonist Colin Wicking this week said he feared he could fall foul of the NT's planned new anti-discrimination laws which would make it unlawful to offend or insult on the grounds of race, disability, sexual orientation, religious belief, gender identity or intersex status. For almost three decades, Wicking has made a career of taking the piss out of pretty much everyone.

Christians, atheists, whitefellas, blackfellas, lord mayors and politicians; few have been spared the humiliation of Wicking's subtle scribbling. No doubt some have been offended along the way, but many more have been given a good belly laugh, something that's becoming harder to find in a world that seems to be in a state of constant outrage.

Wicking believes social media — and in particular Twitter — has played a part in government attempts to curb free speech. But it would be a mistake to believe this online cesspit — where offence is dished out and taken in equally liberal measures — in any way resembles real life. Policing the stupid things people say on the internet is impossible, but attempting to do so can have serious consequences for the free speech that forms such an important part of any democracy.

The government says its proposed new laws will have exemptions for artistic works done "reasonably and in good faith".

This falls well short of offering Wicking or any other commentator a decent level of protection.

Wicking would have to spend his time and money explaining what was going through his mind when he drew a particular cartoon, and deal with the stress of being labelled a racist, bigot or homophobe while the process takes place.

His defence would also rely on the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Sally Sievers agreeing that he had acted reasonably and in good faith. Ms Sievers seems like a fair and reasonable person, but she won't be in her role forever.

At some stage she will be replaced by another lawyer, and there's a long list of people from the NT's legal profession who can barely hide their disdain for the publication that prints Wicking's work.

To see how this process can all go so badly wrong, you only have to consider the case of The Australian newspaper's late cartoonist Bill Leak. Leak was referred to the Human Rights Commission after complaints that his cartoon depicting dysfunction in the NT's Aboriginal communities breached section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. He was eventually cleared under Section 18D, which offers an exemption similar to the one the NT Government is proposing, but not before being subjected to a torturous process that dragged on for four months. Leak's family believes the stress of this process contributed to his death from a heart attack.

Of course there should be laws against those who incite violence, but, as we saw with the tragic Charlie Hebdo massacre, the only recent examples of people being subjected to violence as a result of cartoons are the cartoonists themselves. And god knows, in an era where laughs are hard to come by, we need all the cartoonists we can get. But perhaps the greatest tragedy in the stifling of our cartoonists and comedians is that it's counter-productive to the progressive cause it seeks to fulfil. Anyone who's watched Blazing Saddles knows the butt of its jokes are the racist white guys, not the black sheriff they refer to as a n-----.

For decades artists like Mel Brooks, Bill Leak and Colin Wicking have been the champions of the downtrodden, taking up their cause when few others would dare and using humour to ridicule their oppressors.

Any proposal that could hamper their work, should be rejected.

Unlike "Louis and the Nazis" this documentary focuses exclusively on the Gaede family with April Gaede as the Arian activist mother and her daughters Lynx and Lamb at the center. This allows James Quinn to dig a little deeper than Theroux and reveal serious tensions in the family when it becomes more and more apparent that the pop duo does not share their mother's passion for openly expressing extremely divisive views on ethnic issues.
