Excerpt: A new group will be formed to screen road names in Marlborough after councillors criticised developers twice last year for choosing names that were too English.

Councillors first butted heads in March last year after a developer asked to put down English-themed street names, some of which were criticised for reeking of "colonial cringe".

Councillors were at loggerheads again two months later when another developer proposed a street name that "invoked royalty".

The road names in Blenheim's Rose Manor, first signed off by the Marlborough District Council several years ago, included Whitehall Drive, Chapel Close and Bond St.

New Zealand Football is investigating serious allegations of homophobic abuse, following an incident involving Wellington College senior students.

The alleged abuse happened during last week's quarterfinal match between Wellington College and Auckland's Selwyn College at the New Zealand Secondary School Futsal Championships held in Wellington.

It's alleged between 15 and 20 Wellington College students supporting on the sideline targeted a Selwyn player, referring to him as a "BITCH", "FÜCKING FAGGOT", and to "FÜCK OFF YOU GAY CÜNT".

The incident has been described by the 17-year-old Selwyn player, who was the target of the abuse, as "homophobic and sexually abusive".
