New Zealand Football is investigating serious allegations of homophobic abuse, following an incident involving Wellington College senior students.

The alleged abuse happened during last week's quarterfinal match between Wellington College and Auckland's Selwyn College at the New Zealand Secondary School Futsal Championships held in Wellington.

It's alleged between 15 and 20 Wellington College students supporting on the sideline targeted a Selwyn player, referring to him as a "BITCH", "FÜCKING FAGGOT", and to "FÜCK OFF YOU GAY CÜNT".

The incident has been described by the 17-year-old Selwyn player, who was the target of the abuse, as "homophobic and sexually abusive".

The race relations commissioner is condemning Sky Sport presenter Joe Wheeler for imitating a Japanese accent during a live broadcast.

Meng Foon said such off-hand comments and racist micro-aggressions could stack up and become hurtful.

Wheeler has faced intense criticism for the way he talked about a Japanese Highlanders player after the team's Super Rugby win over the Crusaders on Friday night.

"He was leally impressive, wasn't he? He was leally, leally good," Wheeler asked Mitchell Hunt about the performance of Hunt's Highlanders team-mate Kazuki Himeno.

Race relations commissioner Meng Foon says micro-aggressions by Whites need to stop

Wheeler later apologised online.

Foon said mocking anyone's accent or language was hurtful to those people.

"These sorts of comments are best not heard nowadays. There's a huge sensitivity on racism issues now going forward, and I know the younger generation is definitely not tolerating this."

He said with a change in society's values and relationships with diverse communities, language and accents should be respected.

People learning to properly pronounce Māori words was an important example.

Foon said even off-hand comments were bad and a stereotype, and even if someone laughed a comment off, they could be hurting underneath.

"All the micro-aggressions that accumulate, even though they may be small, they do become quite tiresome and hurtful to the people receiving them, so these new micro-aggressions need to stop."

Foon pointed to the Human Rights Commission's Voice of Racism website, which voices the experiences of more than 200 people in New Zealand who have encountered racism, as upsetting examples of racist comments.

He said learning and respecting other cultures was important.

Massey University professor Paul Spoonley, who researches racism, said humour was a difficult area.

"I would have thought we're sensitised to how offensive mocking somebody by using a fake accent is.

"Also I guess in this day and age, why would anybody think that it's OK?"

He said comments like Wheeler's could offend a lot of people.

"I assume part of the audience will have thought there's nothing wrong with it and thought it's some political correctness gone mad."

Wheeler apologised on Twitter shortly after the incident and said he stuffed up. He said he had spoken to Himeno and apologised to him and the team.

"I absolutely accept this is not the standard expected of the sideline team. I've got some work to do obviously, but I'm absolutely committed to doing better."

Himeno replied to the tweet, accepting the apology.

"It's ok joe. Let's enjoy and celebrate our big victory. Let's go landers!!"

Sky chief executive said in a statement to Stuff the comments made by Wheeler were disappointing.

"They are not who we are at Sky, and we need to do better. Joey Wheeler has apologised sincerely and is genuinely very sorry and remorseful for his mistake; and we are working closely with Joey and will continue to reinforce what is expected of all of our team.

"We will learn from this, and we will keep striving to reflect and respect everyone in our community."

To become safe spaces an organisation or site must apply online and be accepted by the alliance of faggotry, which verifies each place's safety with members of the LGBTQI+ community in the area.

In a joint statement with the airport, Novak said a safe space was one where the LGBTQI+ community can freely express themselves without fear.

It does not guarantee 100 per cent safety, rather, it's a space that "has your back" if an incident (violence, bullying, or hate speech) were to occur, he said.

Elderly Pakistani parents of a Christchurch terrorist attack victim say they have received no support from the government and are struggling without their son's salary.

Accountant Syed Areeb Ahmed sent $2200 a month to his elderly parents in Karachi, Pakistan, before he was killed at Masjid An Nur (Al Noor Mosque) in the March 15, 2019 attack.

His father Syed Ayaz Ahmed is now calling for the New Zealand government to step up to support him and his wife as their money fast runs out.

He is among several overseas family of victims who have spoken to Stuff about feeling abandoned by "cruel" government criteria that only supports families within Aotearoa through ACC and other agency support.

Andrew Little, the minister in charge of the response to the Royal Commission report into the attack, said the Government had provided "significant" support and the "Royal Commission did not make a recommendation to pay compensation to overseas families".

It comes after the Human Rights Commission released a report calling for the Government to abide by United Nations terrorism response guidelines and offer reparations and redress to victims.

Ahmed was in tears as he explained the pain of losing his only son – a "loving, caring, and intelligent man" – who the family was "totally dependent on" for income.

He was proud when his son was invited to work for professional services firm PwC in Christchurch, and his son sent half his salary home to his parents – as was custom of Pakistani sons.

Ahmed and his wife have received no financial or social support from the Government, in a country his son knew as fair and just, he said.

"I feel I have been abandoned by the Government," he told Stuff.

He is grateful for donations from the public, which he used to buy the home he and his family rented.

But those donations are fast depleting, and he is scared of their future in a country with no elderly welfare system.

Their only other child, a daughter, is newly married and in a family financially struggling amid Covid-19-hit Karachi.

Little said ACC death benefits for dependents could be paid to people based overseas – including funeral grants, survivor grants, weekly compensation and childcare costs for partners or spouses.

Under the legislation, someone could only be paid weekly compensation based on their child's earnings if they were a financially dependent on them due to their "physical or mental condition".

Ahmed said he wrote to ACC for support, but he was told he did not qualify.

Mariam Gul lost her parents Karam Bibi, 63, and Ghulam Hussain, 66, during Friday prayers at Christchurch's Linwood mosque, along with her only sibling Zeshan Raza, 38.

She said there were "multiple families" abroad feeling neglected by a "cruel" government offering nothing in support.

"Nobody wants to fight for us there in New Zealand.

Victims were still victims no matter where they were living, she said.

She believed the attack was a failure of the government.

Community advisor Raf Manji could see why some victim families overseas might be feeling the Government had "washed their hands of them", particularly because ACC offered them no support.

"We know the ACC model is not the appropriate model in response to a terrorist attack."

Associate Minister for Social Development Priyanca Radhakrishnan said only Christchurch-based victims would be considered for the collective impact board currently seeking nominations.

But she expected the board, set up to help communicate community needs to agencies, would "ensure their voice is heard and responded to".

A historic village in New South Wales will likely be renamed because of its "racist" links to slavery.

Boydtown on the state's south coast was named after Scottish-born entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd, who arrived in Australia in 1842.

Boyd is widely considered to have been Australia's first "Blackbirder" – a term describing the horrific practice of forcibly shipping Pacific Islanders to Australia to work on plantations in Queensland as slaves.

He also advocated for the keeping of slaves.

A plaque on the corner of his namesake road and Kurraba Rd describes him as a banker, merchant, pastoralist and whaler.

Property developer Lyon Group owns the majority of Boydtown, home to a caravan park, the historic Seahorse Inn pub, farming land and a planned residential site.

The company's managing director Mike Milliken told The Sydney Morning Herald he was "highly sympathetic to local Indigenous wishes" and would consider a name change.

Lyon Group has appointed a historian to assist with its review, Mr Milliken told the newspaper.

The news comes after NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean said he would investigate changing the name of Ben Boyd National Park, located near Eden on the south coast.

Last year, the Liberal MP told the ABC he was concerned about the issue.

"I have a huge amount of respect for our Indigenous people and their living history," Kean said.

"Our national parks are about connecting people, not dividing them."

In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and a renewed focus on Indigenous rights, Boyd's legacy has been thrust into the spotlight.

Indigenous leaders have called for places bearing Boyd's name to be changed.

BJ Cruse, chair of the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council, said it was "a slap in the face" to have a place named after someone who wanted to have slaves.

"You immediately think if something is named after somebody, that person warrants some sort of honour because of the way they have conducted themselves," Cruse told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"They could have named it after any race of person. I think government should set the mood by doing the right thing and change the names. Multicultural society should have a say in what the name should be."

Last year, one of the sporting houses at Neutral Bay Public School bore Boyd's name before it was changed to Waratah.

This is not the first time a location has floated changing its name.

In February, Lake Macquarie Council embarked on changing the name of Coon Island because of racist connotations.

The town was named after coal miner Herbert Heaney, the first recorded permanent resident on the island. Heaney received the nickname because his face was often covered with coal dust.

Iconic Aussie cheese brand Coon will be known as Cheer from July after a decision to rebrand.

The mother of a man killed by suspected Islamist insurgents in Mozambique has told of the moment he was shot as he tried to flee a hotel.

Meryl Knox's 40-year-old son Adrian Nel was shot dead in a vehicle he was trying to escape in with his father and younger brother.

They were fleeing after dozens of people were trapped inside a hotel in the town of Palma, which has been under attack by militants since Wednesday.

Six others in the same convoy attempting to flee the hotel were also killed.

Two Britons, an Irish national and a New Zealand national were saved amid an ongoing search and rescue operation in and around Palma, according to a Sky source.

Rescue efforts had been under way before the ambush, with at least 20 people flown to safety in helicopters, according to a South African private security company.

Excerpt: Security Intelligence Service spies have discovered a New Zealander covertly gathering information for a foreign intelligence agency.

The person has been using both "overt and covert" methods to collect information about people in New Zealand who a foreign state believes are dissidents, according to the Security Intelligence Services (SIS).

This information is being reported to the foreign state's embassy in New Zealand, and the SIS is considering its legal options to "mitigate the threat posed by this individual".

While the country behind this spying attempt has not been publicly named, China expert Professor Anne-Marie Brady says the spy will be working for China, as "foreign interference" in New Zealand almost always means the activities of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

"The CCP targets the Chinese diaspora as it fears they could help nurture and support political change in China, and also to try and utilise their contacts and influence in foreign societies," she said.

"The CCP targets New Zealand elites in order to develop access to important New Zealand institutions and people, in other words, for intelligence purposes.

"It also aims to try and shape New Zealand government policy on issues important to China and to access dual civil-military use technology."

She said it was encouraging to see the SIS be more transparent, as the agency had said foreign interference was its most urgent priority "but there is very little public conversation about this".

In the report, the SIS also provided examples of two counter-terrorism investigations. In one, a person who frequented online extremist forums was investigated for talking of launching a terror attack and sharing attack methods. <-- That's a Facebook based Bullshitter.

The SIS "provided advice to other government agencies and worked cooperatively to help mitigate the potential threat".

This is Harassment --> In another case, the SIS ran a year-long investigation into a person displaying violent "white identity extremist ideology" – or white supremacist ideology – both online and in person.

"The individual has not specifically planned or prepared to conduct an act of ideologically motivated violence ... SIS assesses that their rhetoric is unlikely to manifest into any real-world violent behaviour."

Burdett's skull was fractured in three places and pathology evidence showed she was hit at least five times.

The Crown said Rewa raped Burdett and his DNA was found inside her.

Rewa was previously convicted of rape and sexual assault against 20 women and many of those cases shared striking similarities with the Burdett case.

But Rewa claimed he was having a secret affair with 39 year-old Burdett.

He said he had sex with Burdett on Māngere Mountain and in his truck.

On the day of Burdett's death, Rewa said he had sex with her at his home after the pair shared an ecstasy pill.

Half of the New Zealand's domestic counter-terrorism efforts are directed at white nationalist threats while the other half is directed towards faith-based threats.

The shift by the Security Intelligence Service (SIS) follows the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the March 15 shootings, which found that the SIS had been too focused on Islamic extremism - despite pleas from the Muslim community about hate crimes against them.

SIS director-general Rebecca Kitteridge and acting director-general of the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) Bridget White appeared before Parliament's intelligence and security committee this morning.

"Our counter-terrorism effort is split approximately 50/50 across white identity motivated violent extremism and faith-motivated violent extremism," Kitteridge told the committee.

After the hearing, she wouldn't say how much the SIS's counter-terrorism efforts had shifted towards white identity threats, nor would she say whether there were any such threats on the terrorism watchlist.

They had previously been completely absent from the watchlist.

Kitteridge also wouldn't be drawn on whether the SIS would have caught an alleged threat on the Christchurch mosques earlier this month without a tip-off by members of the public, who alerted authorities after seeing messages on 4Chan.

The events raised questions about whether the SIS was monitoring 4Chan, which is commonly used by white supremacists.

"NZSIS is not always visible. Where we are and where we are not, I can't talk about that," Kitteridge said.

"Everybody has a role to play in national security. Just as we don't expect police to stand on every corner and prevent every crime, we and the police stand together and say to the public: 'If you see something of concern, you should say something.'"

The head of the Waikato Muslim Association said he hopes gang members will join Muslims for Friday prayers after the Mongrel Mob pledged to guard Hamilton's mosque.

His threats are not taken lightly, perhaps because the two whites are among the potential victims of the genocide under way in South Africa. So they decide to take him to their farm, and there they placed him in a coffin and threaten him with death. And this is racism, because he is black.
And so, now, the two whites are on trial, while the Black Communists protest out of the court against racism. They raise the placard "Kill White" together "Life Sentence for the Racists", while they are beating two white dolls, nailed to a cross. All very anti-racist.

Whenever you hear a so-called story from a mud or liberal, there's no proof or evidence to back it up. It's always, "I was standing in line at the supermarket and overheard two Whites saying this or saying that."

Give me a break , I wish more Whites were racist, but unfortunately, our People are the least Racist. That's why these muds flood to our Lands. Because they know there's no negative consequences; but we can change that in the future.

Excerpt: In September 2019, Stuff launched a survey asking about racism in New Zealand. Christchurch-based Research First analysed the data, while TextFerret used artificial intelligence to analyse the long-form answers.

About 60 per cent of survey respondents identified as Pākehā, 16 per cent Māori and 14 per cent Asian.

Many shared painful experiences of day-to-day racism by strangers, colleagues, shop workers and officials. Experiences included verbal assaults, put downs, racial profiling and threats of violence – with Māori consistently taking the biggest hits.

The survey also lifted the lid on an undercurrent of resentment from Pākehā against a Māori renaissance.
