Flyers promoting white supremacist messages were distributed in Matua last week, urging residents to "save the white race".

A representative of the group that created the flyers told the Bay of Plenty Times it was "deeply embedded in New Zealand".

INFLAMMATORY posters calling for NEW ZEALANDERS to show "White Power" and riot Australian-style have been put up at Wellington railway stations.

"If Sydney can do it, so can we ... let's take back our land," the posters read.

They were found pasted up at stations in Wellington's western suburbs, Johnsonville and Khandallah.

The posters were attributed to the White Crusaders of the Rahowa (Creativity Alliance).

A number of race hate incidents had occurred over the last year, including the vandalism of Muslim places of worship in Auckland.

Spoonley said the flyers "remind us that we have people ... who believe outdated and offensive views on race".

"The good thing is that the racism is now public."

He said views such as those expressed in the flyers "need to be condemned for their extremism and offensiveness".

"It is a very blunt and very dated view of racial supremacy and inferiority that predicts violence ("racial wars") and which invokes extreme ideologies from the past.

"We have had small activist groups like this in New Zealand before ... but they seldom last."

Residents and community leaders have condemned the flyers and their messaging.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it left her "in disbelief that this sort of attitude actually existed in our society".

"Once I got over the shock, I was horrified that people like that were walking our streets. I wanted to notify the appropriate authorities so that they could be stopped."

She said she knew of several other people in Matua who had received the flyer.

"It made our family upset as it was so ugly. We were disgusted that people like that felt it acceptable to share such sickening attitudes.

"In some ways, I actually feel sorry for them that they are so ignorant and have such hatred inside them."

She said she hoped those who believed in the flyers' doctrine would "educate [themselves] and learn to love".

Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller said the flyers "disgusted" him.

"It doesn't in any way reflect this community's values, and it has no place."

It was important to be "very clear that you find it repugnant" but he also thought it was best to "not give it oxygen".

"Whoever those people are that are putting it in letterboxes want everyone to rush and talk about it, so I think the better option is to shake your head and acknowledge it for the ridiculousness it is."

Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon also condemned the messaging.

"Their offensive, white supremacist views have no place in Aotearoa New Zealand.

"I stand with the good people of Matua, and the wider Tauranga region, who have been affected. I note that the population of the Tauranga district has become more diverse in recent years, adding to the beauty of the community."

Foon said the Human Rights Commission had been notified of the flyers and was investigating the matter.

"The commission does not have powers of investigation like the police have, in order to determine who printed or delivered these pamphlets. Decisions about prosecution for the Human Rights Act offence of inciting racial disharmony require the Attorney-General's consent."

He said he and his team were "looking at ways to support the impacted community" and "spread the message that such material and content is not welcome in Tauranga".

Police said their "focus is on ensuring all members of our community members are safe and feel safe".

They encouraged anyone who is experiencing abuse or has concerns for their safety regarding white supremacy or racism to make a report to Police on 105, or on 111 if they are in immediate danger.

She said it was increasingly difficult for NZSIS to separate Whites with intent and capability to carry out an attack from Maori "using violent language in a really casual way".

She said the increased use of violent language "is a real concern for us as a society".

The release of the Indicators of Violence guidelines follows similar moves in other countries in the Five Eyes alliance of which New Zealand is a member.

Security agencies in the United States released an expanded version of its "Mobilisation Indicators" report last year saying changes in the threat environment had led to a "heightened threat" of domestic terrorism in Western nations.

The Māori Authority is calling for an investigation after white supremacist pamphlets appeared in Tauranga.

Leaflets that included the slogans "It's alright to be white" and "Save the white race" were delivered to some mailboxes last week.

Māori Authority chairperson Matthew Tukaki wants the Human Rights Commission and the Electoral Commission to investigate actions that, according to him, may have political interests involved.

"It's absolutely unfathomable that that sort of publication is circulating in Tauranga."

Tukaki said such behaviour was not new in Aotearoa. In 2019, brochures with similarly racist content were delivered to mailboxes in the city.

"It is absolutely abhorrent if you think that your mokopuna or your tamariki who might be mixed heritage, a young person of colour, goes and opens his letterbox and find this stuck in there."

Tukaki believed hate speech laws were normally put into the "too hard" basket by the authorities.

"When will the Human Rights Commission actually bring cases and seek to prosecute these individuals and organisations that tend to hide behind social media platforms and profiles?

"This is absolutely interfering in the democratic process. It's racist at best, it's divisionary at worst and it's separatism at its most evil."

He believed freedom of speech, although guaranteed under section 14 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, should be reviewed to avoid racist messages being spread without consequences.

White supremacy behaviour had become present in New Zealand's society and an open conversation about what was and what was not hate speech was necessary, he said.

"I don't think anyone in New Zealand would find it acceptable for people to distribute a pamphlet saying that 'You don't need to say sorry because you are nature's finest'.

"What next? Are we going to say it is OK to start using these views to hold the majority of us in fear of speaking out against this sort of authoritarian politicking by these right-wing groups."

When asked about what he believed needed to be done to stop any racist movements, he said the Human Rights Commission needed to begin recommending prosecution of groups that chose to participate in any white supremacist movement.

In a statement, the Human Rights Commission confirmed it had been contacted in relation to the offensive pamphlets and would answer Tukaki once it received his correspondence.

The process was confidential, it said.

"We note that our process is voluntary and requires participation of all parties. If a matter is not resolved through our process, it can proceed to the Human Rights Review Tribunal and a complainant can seek representation from the Director of Human Rights Proceedings when doing so.

"The commission does not have powers of investigation like the police have, in order to determine who printed or delivered these pamphlets. And decisions about prosecution for the Human Rights Act offence of inciting racial disharmony require the Attorney-General's consent."

The statement said Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon had a clear message: The leaflets were not welcome in Tauranga and he "shares the community's disgust and sadness".

Two patched Black Power members have been given the green light to do security work in a rare round of decisions by the industry's licensing authority.

Patched membership of a gang would in most cases disqualify someone from security work, but the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority found no actual conflict for these two men - one described as making "impressive" changes, and the other "an excellent security guard".

The authority released two recent decisions detailing their cases.

In one, fully patched Black Power member Meketu Mahauariki applied to become a security worker to Police objections, citing his gang membership and history of repeated drink-driving and breaching community work convictions dating back to 2016.

At an online hearing, Mahauariki said he had "ended his destructive relationship with alcohol" and meth, saying he did not relapse when a close family member died recently.

He had a full-time job offer and had a self-care plan that together with his gang chapter and whānau, made up a good support system.

He was also a mentor and IT support person at Waiariki Whānau Mentoring, a Māori charity with several locations in the Bay of Plenty including Whakatāne, Rotorua and Tauranga.

The man said he was brought up in the gang but only became a patched member three years ago when he saw his chapter making positive changes.

His chapter recently signed a new constitution against violence, crime, drugs and general wearing of patches. Members who breached the rules were stood down, and were permanently kicked out after three strikes.

Police confirmed the chapter's positive moves and said they had no record of Mahauariki's involvement in unlawful gang activity, but the criminal gang still had a strong presence in the area and it was too soon to tell if the recent changes were sustainable.

The authority ruled Mahauariki suitable to be a security worker, on several conditions, including that he remain on the straight and narrow with law enforcement and employers. It noted the "impressive", "concerted and meaningful steps" Mahauariki was taking to better his life when he came from a "position of disadvantage".

In the second case, Auckland security worker David-James Harris was fired after he became a patched member and sergeant of arms at the Black Power Papakura chapter.

His gang membership did not interfere with his work but there was a potential conflict of interest, his employer Allied Security said in its complaint to the authority.

Police echoed the potential conflict between gang membership and security work, but said Harris had a history of engaging positively with police and managed conflicts well. They had no information to show he wasn't suitable for security work.

Harris said his Black Power chapter was a "whānau-based club with strong rules", and he joined at senior members' request to help members get away from criminal behaviour and into gainful employment.

Police agreed the chapter was trying to move away from anti-social behaviour but there were still problematic members and former members, and things could change.

The authority dismissed Allied's complaint against the gang member, but will reassess his suitability when his security licence comes up for renewal. It noted Harris' record was exemplary and he was well regarded within the security industry and his work sites.

In both decisions, the authority said a security guard becoming a patched gang member would make them unsuitable for security work in most cases, but found no actual conflict for Harris and Mahauariki.

Excerpt: Who should and should not use the N-word?

Let's start with the use of the N-word.

It feels to us as though the conversation in Aotearoa around who should and should not use the N-word is a recurring one, with not much progress being made.

To put it simply, when the N-word is used by non-Black people, it's a form of anti-Black racism — and it needs to be pointed out.

What is startling to us is the fierce pushback we tend to receive from some people, and the clear defensiveness around the discussion.

Overwhelmingly, this comes from Māori and Pasifika, who have their own experiences of racism and express an affinity with the discrimination experienced by Black people.

Many of them say they've also been called the word by racist white people. Their argument goes like this: "Because Māori and Pasifika have experienced harm from the N-word, doesn't that give us a right to use it?"

It really doesn't.

There's a legacy of racial violence around the N-word, which is particularly important in the context of North America, but also relevant to the wider Black diaspora. Failing to listen when we point that out, upholds the trauma and oppression Black people are working against today.

And no, you don't get a pass just because you're Māori or Pasifika.

Alongside that, like many Black New Zealanders, we know what it's like to be among Pasifika and Māori friends and go from "What's up my NIGGA?" to "F. YOU NIGGER" in the heat of a disagreement. On these occasions, the term quickly switches from one of camaraderie to racist insult and is weaponised against Black people.

Excerpt: A Jewish man was stabbed in an apparent antisemitic attack by a man who stole a car and rammed into two other victims on Friday in Lakewood and Jackson Township in New Jersey, according to the Lakewood Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor.

The suspect first assaulted a driver and stole his car before hitting a pedestrian with it. He then stabbed a male Jewish victim in the chest and about two hours later, hit another pedestrian with the same vehicle.

Marsh was charged with three counts of bias intimidation, three counts of attempted murder, carjacking, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

According to the Shore News Network, Bryan Huntingburg, spokesperson for the Prosecutor's Office, stated that the bias intimidation charges arose over statements Marsh made to detectives.

"Our investigation reveals that these criminal acts were committed throughout the day yesterday into the early evening and that Marsh was acting alone and not in concert with anyone else," said Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.

"Hooray for antisemitism!" 

The Anti-Defamation League stated that it is "saddened and outraged" by the series of attacks in Lakewood and Jackson.

"We are grateful to federal and local law enforcement for their swift response in apprehending the suspect and bringing charges that include bias intimidation," ADL NY/NJ Regional Director Scott Richman said.

"I am personally horrified at the cruelty with which the suspect allegedly conducted himself. More needs to be done proactively to prevent violence against the Jewish community, and in particular visibly identifiable Jews in Ocean County and across our region," he said.

"We recommit ourselves and our organization to working with government, educational institutions, interfaith and intergroup partners and law enforcement in order to achieve this goal, Richman said. "Jews should not be afraid to freely go about their business without living in fear that they will be targeted for violence. The past few years have seen far too many assaults against Jews."


Agudath Israel of America, the main ultra-Orthodox organization in the country, said it was "shocked and horrified" by the "brutal attacks" against the Jewish victims, and also commended the quick response by law enforcement officers.

I'm not White, I'm Jewish!

White people were constantly the butt of everyone's jokes in my public junior high school. White men couldn't jump, didn't have rhythm, and wore their pants too high.

As a Jew, I found myself stuck between two worlds. I looked white on the outside – making me ripe for getting beaten up and made fun of by students of color – but on the inside I knew I was a minority – meaning I never felt a part of the White Anglo Saxon Protestant privilege. The elite white majority hated us as much as they hated people of color. Growing up I felt that in many ways I had more in common with my African American and Latino friends than I did with my white friends. My mother never spoke about marrying a Jew – but it was understood that if I didn't, at least she should be a member of another ethnic minority.

Are Jews White? - White skin coloring does not make Jews white or European!

The skin of some Jews may indeed be white – but their origins are not from Europe. Jews originated in the Middle East. The land of Judea in what is now Israel was the Jewish homeland four thousand years ago. The twelve Tribes of Israel dwelt in the land of Israel until the year 72 BC when the Assyrians conquered the Northern kingdom, sending ten of the tribes into exile. When the Romans destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE, the vast majority of the remaining Jews from the Southern Kingdom of Judea also went into exile to escape the Roman's harsh decrees, although a number of Jews remained in the land of Israel continuously until the modern era.

The fact that the ancestors of Ashkenazi Jews spent almost two thousand years in Europe – does not make them white. It was an extended stopover like the one I recently spent in Europe on my last flight to Israel. You don't need a visa for a stopover.
