EUROPE'S finance ministers have failed to reach agreement on the future of Greece today as a run on the banks saw mass cash withdrawals, shares plunge to a three-year low, the State admit its broke and the riot squad deployed across Athens to battle Molotov-wielding anarchists.
Eurozone leaders will hold an emergency summit on Monday to avert Greece defaulting on loans and dropping out of the EU as their finance ministers meeting in Luxembourg failed to reach any agreement today.
That meeting was seen as the second last chance to work up a deal after the IMF firmly said there would be no more credit offered to Greece and come June 30 it could default and trigger a EU-wide crisis.
"It is time to urgently discuss the situation of Greece at the highest political level," European Council Donald Tusk said of Monday's "emergency summit" to be held in Brussels.
Already both Germany and the UK have drawn up contingency plans for if Greeks move to drop out of the EU, even down to how to get their tourists and expat citizens out should the banks suddenly close and leave them stranded.
That seemed a faint prospect after it was revealed that Greek savers pulled 2 billion Euros (AUD$2.9 billion) from banks in the past three days after last weekend's failed talks.
The withdrawals increased today after the latest failed meeting and the IMF confirming there was no more credit to be offered to Greek's ever increasing desperate but defiant leftist leader Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to avert default on its 1.6 billion Euro loan.
