Five people have been arrested at anti-racism and anti-Islam rallies in Sydney, a day after violent clashes at similar protests in Melbourne.About 150 members of the Reclaim Australia group gathered in Sydney's Martin Place on Sunday morning, some wearing ancient Greek army costumes and others with Australian flags draped across their shoulders.


Two blocks away, a loud counter-protest group waved banners saying 'Stand With Multiculturalism Against Racism' and 'No Racism, no Islamophobia'.

Police kept the groups separated but one man was swooped on by officers after slipping into the anti-racism protest.The crowd became noisy and several people shouted 'Nazi' as he was led away.

George Jameson, rallying with Reclaim Australia in a replica Spartan military outfit, said they weren't racists and had come together to stand up for freedom of speech.

Anti-racism protesters and nationalists have clashed in Melbourne, with police forced to use capsicum spray to subdue demonstrators.At least four people were arrested on Saturday after rival rallies held by Reclaim Australia, the United Patriots Front and several groups against racism and Islamophobia attracted hundreds of people.

Victoria state Deputy Premier James Merlino said the clashes near state parliament, which included masked protesters who tried to break through a police line, were unpleasant.'People don't like seeing ugly scenes like they're seeing today,' he said.


'The message to all Victorians is that the spreading of hatred and the spreading of bigotry is not tolerated.''Our (cultural) diversity is one of our state's greatest strengths ... it's up to all of us to protect our diversity, celebrate it, send a message to those very small number of people that the spreading of hatred, the spreading of bigotry, is simply not tolerated,' he added.

Police assistant commissioner Stephen Leane said while only a small number of protesters were intent on violence, the use of capsicum spray was justified.'(Police) were at significant threat of having their lines over run and it was a tool we had to use at the time,' he said.

During a lightning visit to the exercise area on Sunday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott insisted that China appreciated that Australia was an ally of the United States.


"That has never stopped a very strong friendship with China," he said.

"Both Australia and the United States and Australia are friends of China's. We are all encouraged by the rise of China."

For many in Washington the news that they were friends of China would have come as a surprise.

Given the amount of military might on display at TS 2015 and that China has in the past described Australia as the "southern claw" of the American crab, Beijing might have been equally shocked by the Abbott "friends" analysis.

For those in the Pentagon who believe that China's growing military might and territorial arrogance in the South China Sea are key drivers of the American "pivot" to Asia and Uncle Sam's growing military presence in Northern Australia, not to mention the involvement for the first time of Japanese forces, it is a tricky concept to grasp.

Mr Abbott further confused things when he declined to rule out the possible future permanent basing of US forces in Northern Australia.
