A SECRET clue on a centuries-old map could solve a 400-year-old puzzle: What happened to a group of colonists who disappeared without a trace?

A group of 115 pioneers were sent to the New World with the mission to found a new city and expand their queen's empire.

But six years later, their settlement was deserted: 90 men, 17 women, 11 children had all disappeared into oblivion.

It was suggested that they could have been slaughtered by a Native American tribe but, curiously, there was no sign of a struggle or battle.

Now, a centures-old map may finally provide the answers historians have longed for.

In 1584, Queen Elizabeth hoped to build upon the British Empire by expanding and colonising the "New World", which we now know as the United States.

The Roanoke Colony was an attempt by the British to establish a permanent settlement in what is today's Dare County, in North Carolina, on the US east coast. They hoped to use it as a launching pad for raids against Spanish ships, who were at war with the British at the time.

After two reconnaissance missions, a third group of 115 colonists were dispatched to establish a colony in 1587, headed by Governor John White.

"This voyage was the first to include families and farm tools, their mission was to establish a permanent 'Cittie of Raleigh' and, of course, to add wealth to the queen's coffers ... the prior explorers were told of gold, copper and other resources farther inland," Alastair Macdonald, officer and archeologist for the First Colony Foundation, told news.com.au.

But after their relationship with Native Americans turned sour, Governor White was persuaded to return to England in a desperate bid to bring supplies, resources, and help.

"The prior explorers were not very statesmanlike in their communications with the native Indians in the area. They did need more room in a friendlier environment," Mr Macdonald said.

COLONISTS VANISH WITHOUT A TRACE

Thanks to the Anglo-Spanish war, it took Governor White three years to return.

In that time something in the Cittie of Raleigh went wrong, and when White landed in 1590, he found the settlement deserted. The colonists had disappeared into oblivion.

Nothing was ever heard of from these people again. There was, however, a clue that suggested they may have moved to nearby Croatan Island. The word "Croatan" was found carved into a post, along with "Cro" carved into a nearby tree.

It could also suggest the colony was captured by its islanders.

Foul weather forced Governor White back to sea and home to England. He would never return.

Theories suggested the lost colonists ran into trouble after encountering a Native American tribe and were brutally slaughtered.

A DISTRAUGHT Darwin mother-of-two and long-time Territorian has told of her mental and physical trauma after she was king-hit while serving customers at a Fannie Bay supermarket.

Doulla Giallouris, 51, was punched in the left eye in the incident, leaving her with a severe hairline fracture.

The shocking attack, which was recorded by Fannie Bay IGA's CCTV footage, has led to owner Manuel Kotis calling on community leaders to urgently address increasing violent crime in Darwin, saying this was the fourth assault at his store in two years.

A man, 24, has been charged with assault, unlawfully causing serious harm and stealing, and appeared at Darwin Magistrates Court yesterday, where he was remanded in custody until further mention in October.

The confronting footage shows shocked customers watching on as Mrs Giallouris was attacked while behind the counter at 10am yesterday.

She had confronted the customer for allegedly stealing tins of food, which he can be seen on camera removing from his pockets.

He then turns to leave the store before returning, leaning over the counter and punching Mrs Giallouris, who was taken by ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital.

"Every time I close my eyes I see him ... and I keep thinking, 'What if he had a knife or gun'," an emotional Mrs Giallouris told the NT News exclusively from her home yesterday.

Mrs Giallouris, who has worked at the supermarket for more than 10 years, will require ongoing eye specialist treatment.

http://www.ntnews.com.au/news/northern-territory/cabbie-capers-that-take-you-for-a-ride-territory-taxi-scams-exposed/story-fnk0b1zt-1227477738792

A FORMER taxi driver has lifted the lid on dirty tricks used by Territory cabbies to increase their earnings by rorting passengers, labelling the system "corrupt".

Tony Hibbert, 59, said he witnessed a "number of dodgy tricks" used by other taxi drivers before retiring last year. He said he wanted to expose the scams because the issue was "out of control" and entrenched in the NT taxi industry.

"The drivers who turn up to work use various methods to handle affairs ... it's an incredibly corrupt system run by a small group of people," Mr Hibbert said.

"There are so many dirty, underhanded tricks for making money and some are downright illegal."

Mr Hibbert — who says he worked as a chauffeur for an ASIS boss and Commonwealth heads of government prior to becoming a cabbie — said "double dipping" was a common trick used by dodgy taxi drivers.

"Some drivers swipe the passenger's credit card — especially if the passenger is drunk — and they enter the fare and the same figure again where it says 'tip' so they're charged double," he said.

"They don't turn on the interior light, then pass back the card and they've got an extra fare they haven't earned.

"Someone just catching a taxi doesn't normally notice."

According to Mr Hibbert, some drivers switch the monitor from 'day' to night' rate settings to hike up fares even when the higher rates don't apply.

Mr Hibbert said "stacking jobs" was often the cause of delays in picking up passengers who pre-booked fares.

"The drivers accept jobs they can't possibly get to straight away then either turn up an hour later when they can get to them or give them out to their taxi mates if they can't make it," he said.

"They essentially remove the jobs from the pool of available jobs then do them at their leisure ... that's one of the reasons passengers can be left waiting a long time."

Mr Hibbert said "sharking fares" was a tactic used by some taxi drivers to increase earnings.

"If (one driver doesn't) have a fare, (they) pull up in front of hotel X, someone looks like they want a taxi, and they say 'taxi for Smith?' and (the passenger) says 'yes' and then (the driver) takes someone else's fare," he said.

"There's not a problem with taxi supply in Darwin — there's an under-utilisation of taxis because of the way they operate and the rorting that goes on ... everyone wants big fares.

"I think there should be coverage of everything that goes on in the taxi all the time."

Mr Hibbert said he has reported dozens of the incidents to various taxi companies and government departments, including the Department of Transport and Department of Disability Services, and ministers over recent years.

"But everyone seems to just want to sit on their hands," he said.

There have been 38 complaints — Darwin, 25, Alice Springs, 10 and Gove, 3 — made to the NT Department of Transport against taxi drivers in the Territory so far this year.

Sounds like typical, greedy ,curry behaviour to me!
