A local of Maroubra reported that each of the cars that arrived was "full, you know had four passengers." The convoy was reportedly armed with bars and bats, knives, machetes and guns. The group assaulted several people, knocking one unconscious and threatening another with rape, and damaged between 60 and 100 cars, setting at least one on fire.

Police in riot gear moved to contain the violence and the crowds responded by throwing bricks and glass. Residents reported that in some streets "every car" had had their windows smashed, with glass covering the streets. Police also confiscated 40 iron bars and arrested 14 people.

A 26-year–old mechanic dubbed "Dan" was stabbed in the back three times and twice in the thigh with a 9.8 centimetre blade. The incident occurred outside Woolooware golf club when two cars carrying a group of males "described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance" approached the man and his friends. Dan and his friends attempted to flee from the group who were shouting "Get the Aussie dogs ... get the Aussie sluts", Dan was knocked to the ground and was repeatedly kicked in the head. The attack ended when the 9.8 centimetre knife snapped off in the victim's back. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition as the blade had narrowly missed his spine and lungs.

Jake Schofield was attacked by a group of four men of "Middle Eastern appearance", the men beat Schofield repeatedly, stabbing him twice and hitting him with a piece of concrete before stealing his wallet and keys. The attack left him with a fractured eye socket and fractured nose.

PAST generations of Australians welcomed refugees with open arms and the nation is richer for it, a pro-asylum seeker rally in Melbourne has heard. 
 
SEVERAL hundred people braved the rain for the Walk Together march through the city's CBD and, notably, past the Greek and Little Chinatown food districts.

"We didn't always keep people in legal limbo for many years after fleeing war and fleeing death," federal Greens MP Adam Bandt told the crowd after it gathered at Federation Square.
"When we treat boat people like people, we are all better off."
Mr Bandt said Australia needed to remember the compassion of the past, including under Liberal prime minister Malcolm Fraser, when the nation extended open arms to refugees and "not a closed fist".

Federal Labor MP Andrew Giles said there were almost 60 million displaced people in the world and Australia had to "face up to our responsibilities as a rich and free nation".


"The politics of asylum (seekers) haven't done much for Australia, haven't done much for the sort of country I want to live in, over the past 14 years," Mr Giles said.
The marchers carried signs that read "Common people, common dreams" and "We are all people we are all equal".
Kate Milton, from Healesville, joined the march with her three young children and husband.
"We just believe that everybody is welcome here in Australia," she said.

"cultural sensitivity training". I wonder if any Abos get to go to do that to learn how to be culturally sensitive to others? Learn how to act appropriately, with fine manners and how to respect other's and their property? That'll be the day?

A Victorian school that invited Muslim children to walk out of assembly before the national anthem was played has been criticised by parents and maverick Senator Jacqui Lambie.

Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School said Shia Muslim students were allowed to skip the anthem because during the month of Muharram taking part in joyous events such as singing and listening to music is frowned upon as it is a time of mourning, the Herald Sun reports.

Lorraine McCurdy, who has two grandchildren at Cranbourne, told radio station 3AW she "saw red" when children were invited to leave before singing 'Advance Australia Fair'.

"Two children got up and said 'welcome to our assembly' with that a teacher came forward and said all those who feel it's against their culture may leave the room," Ms McCurdy said.

"With that about 30 or 40 children got up and left the room.

"We sang the national anthem and they all came back in.

"I saw red, I'm Australian and I felt 'you don't walk out on my national anthem, that's showing respect to my country."

Independent Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie said she found the whole situation "disgusting".

"I find that absolutely devastating, we should all be singing the Australian national anthem and we should be doing that with pride," the senator said.


If these pricks don't want to go our way they should go the highway. I can't believe how teachers are giving them the option to leave! SO their culture first Australian second? Poor sooky la la Muslims?! They may be offended ? I am aware they bastardised the national anthem in the 80's to make it more multi culti anyhow.. now even the bastardised version isn't PC enough?

Since the original lyrics were written in 1879, there have been several changes, in some cases with the intent of increasing the anthem's inclusiveness and gender neutrality. Some of these were minor while others have significantly changed the song. The original song was four verses long. For its adoption as the national anthem, the song was cut from four verses to two. The first verse was kept largely as the 1879 original, except for the change in the first line from "Australia's sons let us rejoice" to "Australians all let us rejoice". The second, third and fourth verses of the original were dropped, in favour of a modified version of the new third verse which was sung at Federation in 1901.[
