A NERVOUS peace hangs over Angurugu today as senior community ABBO's meet in an effort to prevent a repeat of yesterday's violence that left two men — aged 19 and 29 — dead and more injured.
Extra police and the Territory Response Group flown in from Darwin brought an end to fighting yesterday afternoon, but there are fears it will begin again today.
One senior man told the Sunday Territorian he was on way to meet with others to diffuse the situation.
"There will be spears flying everywhere today," he said.
He said the protagonists had fled into the bush and would soon come back.
Other reports have it that one side returned to the nearby community of Umbakumba.
In Darwin, Commander Tony Fuller said the spear fight of 50 to 60 residents of Angurugu began as a family feud Thursday afternoon over a disagreement between two women in the community. He said a male relative intervened and one of the women was knocked out.
That resulted in another male relative driving from Umbakumba to seek details of what had occurred.
Commander Fuller said upon arriving in the community, the man was ambushed by three males who threw rocks at his vehicle causing him to crash into a fence. The driver then left the vehicle armed with a variety of weapons to search for the assailants.
Police were called but the man refused to file a formal complaint. Commander Fullers said the three men reappeared later and began arguing with the driver. Four police officers returned to the scene but were overwhelmed by the 50 to 60 people who had assembled in the street carrying spears, axes and machetes.
"Police attempted to disperse the crowd but were forced to retreat due to the overwhelming number of armed persons who had gathered on each end of the street brandishing spears at each other," Commander Fuller said.
A single spear was thrown which precipitated a storm of spears resulting in two dead and another man currently listed as critical but stable condition in hospital in Darwin.
Groote Eylandt has a troubled history of intra-clan violence and while yesterday's deaths were sparked by new sequence of events, feuds go back generations.
....And the mainstream media think HSN is the biggest racist group in the country? Ever heard of them taking the level of hatred to the level the coons have with their inter clan racism?
The injuries sustained the sort of weaponry used? .. Well I guess the boongs didn't insult the Jew so there is not so much of a "hullabaloo" as the sort made about "Hammered" QLD or CREATORS AROUND THE WORLD.
