SWEDEN — a nation that hasn't been in a fight for more than 200 years — has been issued a chilling warning by a top general: expect World War III "within a few years".


"The global situation we are experiencing and which is also made clear by the strategic decision leads to the conclusion that we could be at war within a few years," the statement reads. "For us in the army we have to, with all force we can muster, implement the political decisions."

Major General Anders Brännström made the stark statement in a brochure being distributed among attendees of an armed forces conference next week.

It's since sparked a storm of local controversy.

Is such a threat real? Is Europe strong enough to deter it?

Can Sweden defend itself?

General Brännström wrote that increasing tensions in the region had caused a shift in Sweden's military strategic thinking. No longer is it gearing towards assisting international policing operations. It's now focused on the "capability of armed battle against a qualified opponent".

Sweden's military was now optimising its armed forces for "a threshold effect against military attacks and ultimately defend Sweden", he said.

AS Europe grapples with the wave of migrants, one country expects to expel up to 80,000 migrants whose asylum requests will likely be rejected.


Sweden said it expects to expel up to 80,000 migrants as another dozen people including children drowned off Greece in a desperate bid to reach Europe.

As the continent grapples with efforts to stem a record flow of migrants, Swedish Interior Minister Anders Ygeman said the mass expulsions of people who arrived in the Scandinavian country last year would require the use of specially chartered aircraft and be staggered over several years.

"We are talking about 60,000 people but the number could climb to 80,000," he told Swedish media, adding that police and migration authorities had been tasked with organising the scheme.

Of the 58,800 asylum requests handled by Swedish migration authorities last year, 55 per cent were accepted. Many of those requests were however submitted in 2014, before the large migrant flow began.

Ygeman said he used the 55 per cent figure to estimate that around half of the 163,000 asylum requests received in 2015 would likely be rejected.
With the influx showing little sign of abating despite the cold weather, many countries — including Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France — have tightened their asylum rules in a bid to discourage new arrivals.

Reflecting the mounting tensions, Brussels on Wednesday blasted Greece's handling of the crisis and warned it could face border controls with the EU's passport-free Schengen zone if it does not protect the bloc's frontiers.

Athens is worried its border with Macedonia will be closed, leaving refugees trapped in the country.

Concerns have been growing over conditions in Sweden's overcrowded asylum facilities, however, and on Tuesday officials called for greater security the day after an employee at a refugee centre for unaccompanied youths was stabbed to death.

A young male allegedly attacked the 22-year-old employee, named by local media as Alexandra Mezher whose parents were from Lebanon, at a centre for youngsters in Molndal, near Gothenburg on Sweden's west coast.

Her death has led to questions about conditions inside some centres, with too few adults and employees to take care of children, many traumatised by war.

Sweden's National Police Commissioner Dan Eliasson earlier this week requested 4,100 additional officers and support staff to help counter terrorism, deport migrants and police asylum facilities.

And to add further insult to some nasty grazes, the man's attackers stole his beer.

The 59-year-old victim was enjoying Australia Day, celebrating his freedom by sunbaking nude with a cold beer in hand at the Casuarina Free Beach.

He was left bare after the beach bandits, one of whom was wearing an Australian flag bandanna, stole his backpack containing his wallet, keys, phone and beer.

A police spokesman said the altercation occurred just after midday.

"The man was enjoying a beer on the beach shortly after midday when the group approached him asking for a cigarette. They returned 20 minutes later to demand alcohol and cigarettes," he said.
The man was threatened with empty beer bottles and then pushed over several times, suffering grazes and scratches to his side and back."


The man attempted to give chase but was pushed to the ground.

The attackers are described as of indigenous appearance.


"The first man is described as aged around mid-20s, 173cm, slim build, wearing a distinctive Australian flag bandanna around his head. He had a goatee beard with a half-inch tuft on his chin," the spokesman said.

"He was wearing black board shorts and a black tank top with coloured beading around the edging."

The man who grabbed the backpack was wearing a khaki T-shirt and khaki shorts with a tartan pattern and is described as being 170cm tall, in his mid-30s with a stocky rugby player build, with a stubbly beard, and short wavy brown hair, going grey, police said.

The woman is described as being aged in her early 30s, 165cm tall, with black, tied-back hair and wearing a blue skirt and black T-shirt.

Police were called to the scene off South Tce at midnight after a woman woke to a man allegedly sexually assaulting her in the dry river bed.

Police said the victim was lying naked in the riverbed upon their arrival, when she pointed out the alleged offender, who was sleeping beside her. Police arrested the man at the scene.

Watch Commander Michael Milde said the suspect would remain in custody until he was questioned about the incident.


"We have the offender in custody and he will be questioned (yesterday afternoon)," Commander Milde said.

Officers conducted investigations at the scene yesterday morning.

MELBOURNE boy Patrick McCarthy would sit on his roof and watch the nightly show: 15 or 20 men and boys, perhaps of "Slayer", "Megadeth" or "Evil" mobs, armed with metal rods and bottles and hunting enemies through the littered streets of the Northern Territory's biggest Aboriginal community. 
 
Fists were put away quickly in favour of steel, then one mob would run and the other give chase.

Cars were burning and windows were smashing.

"When I first got here it was madness," McCarthy, 34, says. "All night, all you could hear was the noise — screaming, clanging of bars, rocks.

"They never attacked me but it was all pretty scary. You'd be driving a kid somewhere and the next thing you'd have a Troopy full of blokes with iron bars and axes coming 'round the corner."


That was 14 months ago. McCarthy had just been appointed a regional development manager by AFLNT and posted to Wadeye, 420km southwest of Darwin, and tasked with resurrecting the football league after a two-year hiatus.

He had left Melbourne studies as a youth worker for the Territory's Wild West.

Swastikas scrawled on the walls and corrugated iron fences here are not the work of Neo-Nazis, but a collective of Aboriginal men known as the German Boys.

Elsewhere is evidence of the Metallica, Fear Factory and Bullet for my Valentine mobs.

Members from notorious rival gangs the Judas Priest Boys and Evil Warriors walk the streets, though many are in jail, and women have been known to associate as Kylie Girls, the Madonna Mob or the Celine Dion gang.

Anthropologist Bill Ivory identified 14 gangs in the region between 2002 and 2004, mostly based on affiliation to the more than 20 regional clans.

McCarthy says he's aware of eight these days: on the worst nights the four from each side of town would band together to create two supergangs.

Typical of run-down Territory Aboriginal communities, most of the adult population of Wadeye, also known as Port Keats, is unemployed; homes are overcrowded; and English may be the last, and least well-spoken, of half a dozen regional languages or dialects.

But the heavy metal and punk-themed gangs, operating with such routine violence, is a relatively new cultural phenomenon unique to the region.

It is thought to go back close to 30 years to the introduction of late-night ABC music program, Rage.

Locals say the troubles began in earnest in the early 2000s and riots have been commonplace since.

"On November 20, the warships of the Caspian Fleet launched 18 cruise missiles at seven targets in the provinces of Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo. All targets were hit successfully," Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told Russian President Vladimir Putin.

There were 10 Russian warships that took part in the operation, six of which are in the Mediterranean. Earlier in the week, the Russian air force undertook one the most massive, and complex heavy bomber missions in modern history. In a clear escalation of the air war, 25 Backfire, Bear, and Blackjack bombers went on a coordinated, long-range air raid against alleged ISIS forces in Syria.

All three types of Russian bombers can fly thousands of miles while carrying more than 20 tons of weaponry. Only the United States and Chinese possess similar heavy warplanes.

The fact that the Islamic State is making mountains of cash selling oil indicates that they are selling the oil to some entity. It would seem like an easy calculation to determine exactly what person, group or state is buying this oil.

In fact, that information seems to be readily available.

This information only barely scratches the nefarious relationship between The Islamic State and Turkey. According to respected international security scholar Nafeez Ahmed, writing in Insurge Intelligence:


A senior Western official familiar with a large cache of intelligence obtained this summer told the Guardian that "direct dealings between Turkish officials and ranking ISIS members was now 'undeniable.'"

The same official confirmed that Turkey, a longstanding member of NATO, is not just supporting ISIS, but also other jihadist groups, including Ahrar al-Sham and Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria. "The distinctions they draw [with other opposition groups] are thin indeed," said the official. "There is no doubt at all that they militarily cooperate with both."
