 A PRISONER who killed a man less than three years ago escaped from minimum security in Darwin's prison on Friday night, with hours passing before guards noticed he was missing.

 Jeffrey Ahwon, 19, was one of three teenagers who bashed 39-year-old Rick Dermody at Casuarina Square Shopping Centre in 2013.

 Mr Dermody, 39, later died of massive head trauma in Royal Darwin Hospital.

 A statement released by the Corrections Department confirmed that Ahwon was an open-rated inmate, the lowest security classification given to prisoners in the Territory.

"(Ahwon) failed to attend (Friday) morning's muster parade and was confirmed missing at approximately 8.30am," the statement said.

 Ahwon (pictured) was staying in the low-security workers' cottages at Holtze Prison, a corrections spokesman said.

 Mr Dermody's father, Preston Dermody Sr, lashed out at the Territory justice system, saying Ahwon's sentence was too light, and he should have been kept in maximum security.

"As far as I'm concerned there was no justice done, they basically got a slap on the wrist and a bag of LOLlies," he said of Ahwon's sentence of four years and 10 months.


"If (prisoners) have taken someone's life, they shouldn't be out wandering around free.


"They should serve in maximum security and only maybe be allowed in minimum security if they've behaved themselves, aren't dangerous and only in the last month or so before they're let out."

A source inside the prison told the Sunday Territorian Ahwon was believed to have escaped with another prisoner, but the other man returned to Holtze hours after the pair walked out and gave himself up to prison officers when it was discovered Ahwon was missing.

"These are supposed to be our most trusted prisoners, the ones who are released into the community to work," the guard said.

 No headcounts are done on prisoners in the low-security area overnight.

GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel has tried to placate the increasingly vocal critics of her open-door policy for refugees, insisting that asylum seekers from Syria and Iraq will go home once the conflicts there end.

Merkel, despite appearing increasingly isolated over her policy, has resisted pressure from some conservatives to cap the influx of refugees, or to close Germany's borders. A record 1.1 million migrants arrived in Germany last year.

But growing concern about the country's ability to cope and worries about crime and security after assaults on women are weighing on support for Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).

Merkel said that despite efforts to integrate refugees and help them, it was important to stress that they had only been given permission to stay for a limited period of time

"We need ... to say to people that this is a temporary residential status and we expect that once there is peace in Syria again, once IS has been defeated in Iraq, that you go back to your home country with the knowledge that you have gained," she said on Saturday at a meeting of CDU members in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

She said 70 per cent of refugees that fled to Germany from the war in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s had returned to their home countries.

Her remarks come after Horst Seehofer, leader of the CSU, threatened to take her government to court if his demand to stem the flow of asylum seekers was not met.

Support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) has edged up into double digits. Its leader said in an interview published on Saturday that border guards should shoot at refugees to prevent them from illegally entering the country if need be. Merkel has tried to convince other European countries to take in quotas of refugees, pushed for reception centres to be built on Europe's external borders, and led an EU campaign to try to convince Turkey to keep refugees from entering the bloc.

Germany wants to limit migration from North Africa by declaring Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia "safe countries", which would end their citizens' chance of being granted asylum.

I was desperately worried that you hadn't read or heard enough platitudinous drivel about David Bowie — and therefore felt compelled to weigh in with my own observations. In all honesty I haven't heard so much repetitive, imbecilic guff since Mandela shuffled off this mortal coil. It was even worse than the confected sobfest that greeted the passing of the charming and likeable Lou Reed.

The eulogies for Lou were simply a case of the BBC telling everybody that they are dead hip and edgy, really enjoyed 'Perfect Day' and once knew someone, back in uni, who had an album by the Velvet Underground. With Bowie, it was partly the misguided wish to show off that same hipness, but also an attempt to shoehorn poor old Bowie, only hours cold, into their relentless political agenda. And so as soon as the 'experts' had told us, over and over again, that Bowie was a 'chameleon', they started in on his revolutionary approach to sexual intercourse —which was, in short, an atavistic and unceasing desire to shag anything and everything with a pulse, as often as was humanly possible.


As far as the BBC was concerned, this made Bowie a sort of combination of Harvey Milk and Peter Tatchell rolled into one: a fearless fighter for LGBT rights, pushing back the barriers of conservative morality and heralding, almost single-handedly, a brave new world of equality for gays, transgendered persons, bisexuals, etc.

Missing entirely were Bowie's stated political opinions. Arriving back in drab, grey, strike–ridden Britain from America in 1975, he said the country needed a good dose of fascism. Asked to elucidate, he said: 'I believe very strongly in fascism... Adolf Hitler was one of the first rock stars.' He also lambasted declining moral standards, adding: 'You've got to have an extreme right-wing front come up and sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up.'

PALMERSTON teen Ezra Austral – who boasted about criminal activities in an online rap song – was bashed in a home invasion and taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he was later arrested by police for breaching his bail.


Up to five men stormed Austral's home in Gray and attacked him in the presence of his grandmother on Tuesday night.

The NT News understands Austral was asleep on a mattress in his Palmerston unit when five men arrived at the complex at around 10pm.

Four men waited outside while one walked through the open front door, stood over Austral and repeatedly punched him.

When Austral woke up, the attacker and his gang fled the scene.

The attack only lasted seconds but left Austral with a knock to the head and a swollen arm.

He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

The NT News understands police were tipped off that Austral had presented at hospital.

The 18-year-old was wanted by police for breaching his bail on Sunday night and officers swooped on Austral as he waited for medical attention.


He was treated by medical staff and taken directly to the watchhouse.


A police spokesman would not comment on whether the attack was retribution for an earlier crime.

It is believed Austral did not recognise his attackers.

Austral was refused bail in Darwin Magistrates Court yesterday.

He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on February 9.

A police spokesman said yesterday that the attack was not yet under investigation.

But it was understood the victim's family was considering reporting the incident to police.

Austral was known to police before the incident.

Austral has also previously boasted about shooting police on social media, as well as in a rap song released online.
