A 53-YEAR-OLD woman was assaulted in Leayner Tuesday after she ignored a man who asked for the time.

NT police are calling for witnesses to the alleged assault which took place shortly before 6am.

Casuarina station officer-in-charge, acting senior sergeant Tanya Mace said the woman was walking along the footpath outside the Hibiscus Shopping Centre when the alleged assault took place.

"A man approached her and asked for the time. She continued on her way, but shortly after heard footsteps and was grabbed from behind, around her waist and a hand placed over her mouth," she said.

The offender is described as being of indigenous appearance, aged in his 20s, about 175cm tall with medium length curly hair and a bandage on his left arm.

Police are seeking public assistance to locate 23-year-old Nicholas Munnich following a robbery at a Darwin shopping centre.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said police wanted to speak to Mr Munnich about the robbery at Northlakes Shopping Centre on May 3.

"Mr Munnich is also wanted by police on outstanding warrants for drug related offences," he said.
"He is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, of slim to medium build and 173cm tall."

POSTERS featuring images of Australians granted exemption from the White Australia policy and the slogan "Aussie'' have begun popping up around the Territory.

In Cavenagh St, a vandal has defaced the artwork – ripping "Aussie'' from the base of the poster and writing "Muslim Terrorist'' in thick, black marker.

These words were crossed out late on Saturday night and "Such a Shame'' was written in their place.

Street artist Peter Drew, the man behind the "Real Australians Say Welcome'' posters, travelled through the Territory on the Ghan last week with his new project – What is a Real Aussie?

"It's about asking people to really think what it really means to be Aussie and where we inherit our identity from," Mr Drew said.

"Does Aussie have more to do with the mistakes of the past or more to do with the people who survived the mistakes of the past?"

Mr Drew found a 100-year-old photograph of Indian-born Pashtun cameleer Monga Kahn in the Australian national archives, along with thousands of others who applied for exemptions to the White Australia policy.

One thousand posters featuring seven people from varying nationalities, including an Aboriginal man, will be pasted up across the country.

"A large part of this project is a celebration of the history of Australian diversity, but a part of it is also provocation (against) people (who) are uncomfortable with the idea of multiculturalism, and I think it's important to challenge those people."

But the posters haven't all been received without controversy, with some already ripped down in Darwin.

"The type of art RUBBISH that I make ... puts our freedom of expression above our value of private property – in a pretty gentle way, hopefully," Mr Drew said. And... look at any hullabaloo caused if racialists put up propaganda that is pro Australian. NOT pro multicultural about scumbags who are aussie on paper!

A MAN was hit in the face with an axe in an assault in Katherine.

Acting Superintendent Angela Stringer said an incident occurred at Kirby's Bar in the early hours of yesterday morning, which sparked the attack at a residence later in the morning.

"A large group of hostile intoxicated people were at the residence where some assaults occurred," she said.

"Weapons were used including an axe and a baseball bat. Persons have been assaulted and vehicles have been damaged as a result of the incidents. It appears to us at this stage it started at Kirby's and has flowed on to the residence."

St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said the 21-year-old man was in a stable condition after sustaining injuries to his head and face.

NT Police have captured four prisoners criminal boongs who fled from the Darwin Correction Centre's pre-release cottages last night.
The men — Christopher Keene, Ian Mamarika, Jayras Manggurra and Xavier Nundhirriballa — were found to be absent at a roll call yesterday evening after they were seen close to the boundary fence.
