Aurukun teachers evacuated over safety fears, 'slow' police response probed

Twenty-five teachers and staff are leaving Aurukun after the principal of Noel Pearson's Cape York Academy had his car stolen by a group of youths, one who was brandishing an axe.

Youths tried to break into the home of two teachers early on Sunday morning, when police did not respond immediately, the principal intervened, Education Queensland's regional director Deborah Dunstone said.

As the principal was getting into this car, he was approached by a group of teenagers, including one brandishing an axe, Ms Dunstone said.

"He chose to just hand over the car to the youths," she said.

"There was certainly a scuffle and he has some minor bruising.

"The principal [went] above and beyond the call of duty."

Nine teachers were flown out of Aurukun last night and 16 are leaving today, agreeing to return in a week once their safety concerns are addressed.

Investigation ordered into police response

Independent MP Billy Gordon, whose electorate includes Aurukun, said he had been told by Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) that staff were concerned that police took too long to respond.

"That they were preoccupied with other matters in the community, which is understandable when there is an influx of sly grog into the community that opens up a can of worms," he said.

Six people have been charged over the incident, with four remanded in custody.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said extra officers had been sent to Aurukun.

An investigation has also been launched into the police response.

"I'm not saying police didn't respond," Mr Stewart said.

"I'm saying I'm having the facts of what occurred that night checked by our senior officers."

There are eight permanent officers in Aurukun and five more have been dispatched to stay in the community for as long as they need.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt said unrest had spiked in the past six months.

"It is not uncommon to see this unrest," he said. "We want to see that this community calms down, settles.

"Investing more money is not always the answer. We have to find what the local community wants."

Long history of violence in disadvantaged community

Aurukun struggles with entrenched disadvantage, violence, sexual abuse and other problems.

There have been improvements in Aurukun School's attendance and results since its partnership with Noel Pearson's Cape York Academy.

Aurukun Council's chief executive Bernie McCarthy said CCTV cameras would be installed tomorrow and a community radio program would start next month.

"We just want to reinforce messages through local language," he said.

"You know, good feel about the people, what they should be doing for their community, how they can be engaged in work activities, how they can have better health, how they should look after their countrymen, that's the type of message we'd be sending out."

A community meeting is expected to be called on Friday.

The school will remain closed for a week, and is expected to reopen on Thursday next week.

ADELAIDE could face the same terrorism threats as Sydney unless Muslim immigration is stopped, Pauline Hanson's man in South Australia says.

As pundits predict the One Nation leader could secure a Senate seat on July 2, One Nation SA candidate Steven Burgess has backed her controversial views.

"One Nation is looking at zero Islamic immigration until Islam is reformed," he said.

"With the Islamic culture and the effects of Islamic culture in countries where it's dominant such as female genital mutilation, child brides, the stoning of people who have different beliefs ... that culture is not something we can afford to have in Australia.

"At this stage (SA) has been well insulated but it will only be a matter of time; once the population increases we will see exactly the problems they've had in Sydney, Melbourne and the rest of the world."

Party leader Ms Hanson gained a House of Representative spot 20 years ago and sparked outrage in her maiden speech where she talked about Australia being "in danger of being swamped by Asians", said that Aboriginal people were unfairly privileged and she also criticised multiculturalism

LOCAL steel manufacturers have rejected a last-minute call to finish a fabrication job, pointedly telling the builder "it is such a shame that China can't do this for you by Monday".

In a scathing email obtained by the NT News, MMC general manager and chairman of the Manufacturers Council, Owen Pike, said he found the request from Hutchinson Builders "insulting".

The $5000 job was to fabricate an awning for new lifestyle retailer Anaconda at the Jape Homemaker Village.

"MMC is unwilling to assist Hutchinson with this job. It is well known that Hutchison aggressively use southern and overseas suppliers and subcontractors and disregard local Darwin Business. I find (sic) insulting that you seek support from local business to complete urgent works at the end of a project it is such a shame that China can't do this for you by Monday," he said.

Hutchinson Builders is also building the $300 million Gateway project at Palmerston. For months now the NT News has been regularly contacted by steel manufacturers complaining about the lack of opportunities on the project.

The Gateway reaches an important milestone today with an on-site roof-topping ceremony to mark the completion of the highest construction point of the roof structure. Chief Minister Adam Giles will officiate at the ceremony.

Hutchinson's site manager at Jape Homemaker, Ben Spink, who received Mr Pike's response, was disappointed, describing it as "childish".

"We had been using a local contractor for the job but when it came to the deadline he said he couldn't do it so we asked MMC who have done work for us before," Mr Spink said. "The deadline was client-driven and we have now pushed that back and the original local contractor will do it. It was for a loading dock at Anaconda and the store will open on time.

"I am really disappointed in the response and find it childish. I found out later he blind copied a whole lot of others in on the email he sent me as well.

"We have created a lot of local jobs here and we do try to use locals."

The Giles Government released a "Buy Local" initiative giving a weighting towards local business in response to concerns regarding government procurement rules. It has no power to direct private firms on private projects which has frustrated local manufacturers even more.

Mr Pike has said previously major local firms want to charge the margin but don't want to pay the margin for doing business here

A MAN1/2 caste boong has pleaded guilty to a string of six charges stemming from the vicious robbery and assault of three German backpackers in August last year.

Ashley Matz pleaded guilty to the late night robbery on the young backpackers, who were living out of a car on a vacant block in Rapid Creek.

Ashley Matz has pleaded guilty to six charges after three German backpackers were robbed and assaulted in 2015.

The court heard that Matz and a co-offender became involved in a stoush with the three Germans, which quickly escalated when the two men, who had been drinking, accused the Germans of being rapists and Nazis.

Matz pleaded guilty to stealing the backpackers' iPad, laptop and phones, as well as forcing them to withdraw thousands in cash from an ATM.

Matz and his co-offender then took off with the backpackers' Volvo and set it on fire.

All three of the victims suffered injuries because of the attack.
