Tense footage has captured pro-Palestine activists and counter demonstrators trading blows during a paddle-out in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Counter-protesters were initially held back by a line of police officers as the demonstration took off on the sand at Bondi Beach at 10am on Sunday.

Pro-Palestine activists had invited 'surfers, Bondi residents and Palestine supporters' to join the demonstration in the lead-up to the event.

A large group of counter protesters formed on the steps leading down to the beach, with several waving Australian and Israel flags.

'Off the beach,' the crowd chanted.

One man was filmed telling the pro-Palestinian activists to 'go back to Lakemba', while another woman joined in.

One man was heard yelling: 'Deport the lot of them.'

The Jews Against the Occupation, which organised the pro-Palestine demonstration, sparked backlash in the lead-up to the event.

The Australian Jewish Association argued it was provocative, as Bondi was known for its large Jewish population.

Jews Against the Occupation claimed the demonstration was peaceful, while organiser Michelle Berkon said pro-Israel groups could not fairly claim Bondi as their 'backyard'.

Australian nationalist Thomas Sewell has been denied bail on charges relating to an alleged clash with left-wing extremists in Melbourne after a magistrate said the public needed protection from "hateful" speech.

Mr Sewell, 32, the leader of political organisation White Australia, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday where his bail application was refused by Magistrate Donna Bakos.

He was arrested on Tuesday mid-way through a contested hearing for unrelated matters, and hit with 25 charges including "violent disorder" and "affray" over an alleged incident in the Kings Domain after the March for Australia rally on Sunday.

Ms Bakos ordered that Mr Sewell be remanded in custody on Friday, saying she believed he was a "risk to the safety and welfare of others" and that some of the charges "strike at the heart of a cohesive society".

"People have the right to go about their lives without being confronted by hateful speech," she said.

"To lead and participate in, if not incite, an unprovoked attack on a sacred site ... can only be viewed as serious conduct."

Police prosecutors argued on Wednesday that Mr Sewell should be denied bail unless he disavows his political ideology and group.

Dave Murphy, 56, was left with fractured ribs, spinal and facial injuries, and a concussion from the vicious and unprovoked far-left assault, which took place in the city's CBD on Sunday morning, and spent that night in hospital.

No arrests have been made over the frenzied attack, which was caught on video, and Mr Murphy told Noticer News that when he reported the incident to police he was told they were "unlikely to find the perpetrators".

Then on Friday Mr Murphy was visited by three detectives from Box Hill Police Station, not to ask him about the assault, but to question him about a Facebook post he had made expressing his anger about it.

Sewell, 32, was allegedly among a group of men dressed in black who stormed Camp Sovereignty in Kings Domain on Sunday afternoon following the March for Australia rally in Melbourne's CBD.

Footage showed Sewell and neo-Nazi supporters lashing out at crowds gathered at the camp, the site of remains of Indigenous people from 38 clans.

He is accused in this new arrest of various violent offences allegedly committed at the Melbourne March for Australia rally, specifically at an illegal aboriginal squat in a local park. Before his arrest many members of the Melbourne NSN had stated that they charged the illegal camp because antifa were using it as a base to coordinate violent attacks upon Australians who had attended the protest, especially as they were trying to leave to go home. Pictures from the day showing some cars also spray painted with graffiti slurs of "Nazi" will likely be used in Tom's (and other arrested NSN members) defence to argue that his actions were necessary to protect himself, his organisation, the public and everyone's property from harm.

Australian nationalist leader Thomas Sewell has been denied bail for at least two more days after refusing demands from a police prosecutor to distance himself from his political group and ideology.

Police prosecutor Jonathon McCarthy made a submission to Magistrate Donna Bakos that the "strongest argument" to refuse Mr Sewell bail was that he possessed "racially motivated ideologies".

He told the court Mr Sewell was a "member of a racially motivated organisation that uses that ideology to commit offences", and that if Mr Sewell does not "disavow" his ideology the magistrate could refuse him bail.

On Friday, a magistrate will decide whether Mr Sewell will be granted bail or will remain in prison.

Sewell sparked more chaos two days later when he gatecrashed Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan's press conference with an angry outburst. Hours later, he was arrested and charged over the Kings Domain incident.

Sewell is understood to be an Australian citizen, despite being born in New Zealand.

Kiwi Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was forced to weigh into the saga, amid mounting calls from Aussies for Sewell to be deported back to New Zealand.

Luxon distanced his country from the controversy, claiming that it was Australia's problem.

'He sounds like a pretty awful human being, and he's an Australian citizen so I'll let that run its course,' he told reporters in Auckland on Thursday.

Sewell was charged with 25 offences over Sunday's incident, including violent disorder, affray, assault by kicking, discharge missile and other offences.

He currently remains in custody but will reappear in court on Friday for a bail application.

Detectives continue to investigate the alleged incident in the Kings Domain and urge anyone with any information or footage that may assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In recent days, almost 100,000 supporters have signed a Change.org petition calling on Sewell to be deported to his country of birth.

Petition organiser Constitutional Reformist, called on a change to the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 to enable a High Court deportation.

'We are not backing down. We are evolving. And we are demanding a legal system that protects communities, not extremists,' they said.

The approach of the petition has two steps: the first to revoke Sewell's Australian citizenship 'through a court-authorised process, based on his violent extremist conduct and likely dual nationality'.

It also demands urgent reform of the Australian Citizenship Act 2007.

'So that individuals convicted of serious hate-fuelled crimes can have their citizenship revoked and be subject to deportation with full judicial oversight and constitutional safeguards,' the petition states.

Home affairs minister Tony Burke said that it would not shock him if Sewell packed up his bags and moved back across the ditch.

'I wouldn't be surprised if he renounces his citizenship here anyway,' Burke told the Daily Mail on Wednesday.

'He clearly hates modern Australia.
