A KNIFE-wielding bandit has robbed a Hungry Jacks fast food outlet in the northern suburbs tonight.

The male robber threatened staff at the Main North Rd store at Gepps Cross just before 11pm.
He fled with cash on foot to a nearby white Commodore.

Police said the bandit was of Asian appearance and dressed in dark clothing.

AN armed robbery victim waited more than four minutes for police to pick up the phone after calling 000.
Then he was put through to a call centre 1500km away.
And when he called a second time he was left on hold for 13 minutes.

Alice Springs Tennis Centre manager Matt Roberts said he was under threat from youths armed with knives, a metal pole, planks of wood and broken bottles who were threatening to kill him when he called police on February 22.

He said it took 46 minutes from the time he first called until police arrived.

He then called 000 and was on hold for four minutes and 46 seconds before talking to an officer in Darwin for more than seven minutes, who told him a unit would be sent out.
In a second 000 call he was on hold for 13 minutes and 12 seconds.

According to their own performance indicators, NT police are supposed to answer 000 calls within 10 seconds and dispatch officers within 10 minutes.

NT Police were unable to respond yesterday but Police Commander Southern Region Kate Vanderlaan told the Alice Springs News the delays were under investigation.

Mr Roberts said the situation was not good enough.

"I was in disbelief the first time but I thought it couldn't get any worse," he said.
"But it got three times worse.

"The system just doesn't work.
"If you are in a genuine emergency and surrounded by people and it takes 46 minutes to get someone there, then it isn't working."
Telstra has confirmed the time Mr Roberts waited on hold.

Mr Roberts said about six young men aged between about 13 and 16 had come armed after a youth event at the centre about 9.30am on Friday, February 22.

He said after getting the patrons to leave, 10 youths returned with what he believed were another 10 hiding nearby and threatened him while he was with four young teenagers.

He said they broke through a locked gate and later broke the door of his house, which is next door.

"They told me they were going to cut me and they were going to kill me and do all that stuff," he said.

"Basically they said they were going to kill us and come back with machetes.

"I had a phone in one hand and was explaining where Alice Springs is and (there's) a group of armed people on one side and the kids on the other side of me."

He said police arrived three minutes after the alleged attackers had gone.

Mr Roberts said once there the police handled the situation well and he understood it was a busy night.

THREE "young thugs" - who allegedly bashed a man when he refused to give them a cigarette - have been charged over damaging about $14,000 worth of property.Strike Force Trident cops busted the boys - aged 12, 15 and 16 - after a crime spree in northern Darwin last week. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said the "little crooks" were actively evading capture. "We won't tolerate groups of young thugs running around terrorizing the community like this," he said. The boys then broke into Woolworths Casuarina and stole items, including a hammer, and raided Nightcliff Sports Club twice - stealing up to $300 worth of alcohol. On Thursday night, they allegedly smashed windows and panels of three cars with a metal pole.  They also threw rocks at a security guard's car after a window-smashing spree at Charles Darwin University. The man barricaded himself in the vehicle as one of the youths jumped onto the bonnet, and stomped his feet in an attempt to break the windscreen. The trio was found at a house in Nightcliff on Friday. A MAN charged with having sex with a pet pig called Michael Jackson on a Territory island has appeared in a Darwin court.

The 35-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sat in the dock at Darwin Magistrates Court charged with having sexual intercourse with an animal and indecent behaviour in public in November last year.

The NT News understands Michael Jackson had to be shot following the incident at Alyangula, on Groote Eylandt.

The court was told the man's mental health was a live issue, with his defence counsel asking for the charges to be dismissed.

Stuart MLA Bess Price said many of her relatives and friends were in youth detention - despite her best efforts to keep them out of trouble.

"We try our best to encourage our young people ... don't drink and don't get yourself into trouble because you will go to jail," she said.

"They turn around and tell us 'it's all right Aunty. Jail is all right because we're only in there for a short time'."

They get looked after. They're all mates in there," she said.

"Why would they want to be out in the 45C hot day, outside, when they could be in there in the airconditioned room surrounded by family?"

Ms Price said she supported the CLP's policy of mandatory rehabilitation and wanted to see more programs to help prisoners.

Her calls were backed by Indigenous Advancement Minister Alison Anderson who said she also knew people who were not deterred by the thought of going to prison.

"In winter you'll get people committing crimes just to get a warm bed," she said.

"They tell us they like going to jail because they get three meals a day (and) they're there with their brothers and sisters."

NT News journalist SARAH CRAWFORD spent a week staying at the notorious Kurringal Flats in Darwin's north - here is what she found.

TORRES Strait Islander Angie Mareko has a booming voice which echoes off the grimy walls of Kurringal Flats.

Right now her frightening bellow is directed at dopey-eyed Whitney Brinjen who has plonked herself down in the corridor with a dirty, big bong in her lap.

"F*** what are you doing? Take the c*** inside or I will tip it over the balcony," Angie, 38, roars.

Even in her supremely stoned state, Ms Brinjen does not need to be asked twice.

She scampers inside.


Lots of things are lobbed over the balconies of Kurringal Flats.

Lounge suites, mattresses, clothes and blades from pedestal fans.

Resident Fabian Yovich, 33, saw someone tip a heavy, analogue TV off the balcony of block four. It exploded on the steps near his front door.

"After that I stopped allowing my little nephews to stay over," he said.

Kurringal Flats are three, four-storey buildings of poverty, dysfunction and entrenched disadvantage dumped in the middle of one of Darwin's poshest suburbs, Fannie Bay.

Walking through the back gate past the no alcohol sign feels like you are stepping into an alternative universe.

The contrast between the leafy, picture-perfect townhouses of Fannie Bay and the grim, dirty white blocks of the Territory Housing complex is so extreme you feel disorientated.

Dozens of abandoned vehicles are in the car parks. Some vehicles have had their windows smashed or number plates removed. One car has had its engine and all the seats ripped out.

People sit on the stairs or in the corridors drinking port from plastic bottles all day - even though drinking in common areas carries a $500 fine.

Transvestite Ziggy Wilhelmsen, 50, believes people on the outside think he and all the residents of Kurringal Flats are creeps.

"The society around here thinks we are a big waste of time," he says sitting cross-legged on his couch in a shiny, dark brown wig.

"Sure we are poor and not much of us had a lot of education but we are a real mixed group here."

A 58-year-old disability pensioner who wants me to call her Mary tells me there is only one way to find out what Kurringal Flats is really like.

"You need to see it at night," she says.

Mary offers to let me stay on her couch in her one bedroom flat in block eight for a couple of nights.

I take up her offer and move in.

The Best Block

"Most of the people in this block are elderly, Christian and non-drinkers," Mary's friend Neil Williams, 53, tells me.

This block is pretty quiet it is the best block by far.

Mr Williams, also a disability pensioner, live upstairs from Mary in a two-bedroom apartment which he pays $160 a fortnight to rent. Both have been here for over a decade.

Block eight backs onto a quiet suburban street and Waratah oval where Kurringal residents regularly drink.


Kurringal Flats was built by the federal government in 1966. At its peak there were eight blocks which housed 350 people. Two blocks were demolished in 2001.

Another three were bulldozed two years later and Kurringal Court retirement village, for Territory Housing tenants aged over 55, was built on the land.

Now there are 91 tenants living in 78 units. A further six are empty. Everyone agrees the worst building is block six in the middle.

Mary's neighbour, John Mu, whose screen door was recently broken down in a police raid, tells me that block six is not safe.

"When you are going in there be careful. They can punch you or stab you. You can see the blood on the ground. Police go there all the time," he says.

Block four, on Dick Ward Drive, is considered to be somewhere in between not as safe as eight but far better than six...

VICTORIA'S peak Muslim body has lashed out at "hysterical" objections whenever plans for mosques go before local councils.

Islamic Council of Victoria board member Nazeem Hussain said there was an underlying level of Islamophobia in society and Muslims had to do more to educate people about their religion and mosque proposals.

"People are clearly fearful of Muslims and Islam, and it's easy to create that fear and hysteria in some ways," Mr Hussain said.

Several applications are in the spotlight, including a bid by an Afghan community group to build a mosque and community centre in Doveton, on the city's south-east fringe.

Mr Hussain said Islamic community applications often were met with hysteria not faced by proposals by other religious groups.

"It speaks to an underlying level of Islamophobia in society and a fear of Muslims moving into neighbourhoods and disrupting locals," he said.

Mr Hussain accused Catch the Fire Ministries pastor Danny Nalliah of creating community divisions by spreading false information about Muslims and the Koran in his opposition to the Doveton mosque.

But Mr Nalliah, who had a long-running legal battle with the Islamic Council over a racial vilification matter, said he had no issue with individual Muslims but objected to violent passages in the Koran.

"I am concerned ... because of what is going to be taught in the mosque based on what is in the Koran," he said.

Families and individuals gathered at the Darwin Entertainment Centre for the Flag-raising Citizenship Ceremony yesterday.

New Aussies came from far and wide with nine nations represented, including Burma, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Russia, India, Canada and the Netherlands.

Forty-seven adults and 14 children pledged their allegiance to Australia, and its values in front of family and friends.

Cameras flashed and relatives clapped and cheered as their loved ones were officially welcomed into the Territory community.

Burmese refugee Sarah Sarah and her children Apichart Apichart, 13, and Paw Wah, 10, were among the new citizens.


Ms Sarah was moved to tears as her family was announced as Australians.

The family moved to Australia in 2007 in search of a better life.

"I am happy to be Australian," Ms Sarah said.

Australia Day Council NT chairman Roland Chin said the day was a proud moment for new citizens.

A MAN has died after an assault about a carton of port in Palmerston city centre.

Police say the 47-year-old Palmerston man - who cannot be named for cultural reasons"WARNING TO INDIGENOUS VIEWERS THIS STORY CONTAINS VOICES OF DEAD PEOPLE AND COULD OFFEND SOME VIEWERS" IVT) - died in Royal Darwin Hospital from injuries sustained in the assault.

"The male has sustained a number of injuries when he was located by police and enquiries are continuing to determine whether those injuries contributed to his death."

It is believed the fight over a carton of Tawny port started on the footpath under Highway House and then continued across Palmerston Cct to under the Satepak Building beside Goyder Square around 9am.
Longgrasser Camille Nagalli said she had only heard stories about what had happened, but said it was over grog.
"They were saying that at the corner (of Highway House) they were smashing him," she said.

"Then they smashed him that way (toward the Satepak Building)."



Elders real estate manager Mike Oesterheld, whose office in the Satepak backs on to the second crime scene, said altercations were a regular occurrence.

"You always hear fighting and carrying-on," he said.

A DARWIN bus driver was allegedly punched and smashed over the head with a watermelon - as the alleged offender's young children watched.

A 53-year-old man was in police custody and being interviewed about the incident last night.

The Buslink vehicle was at Hibiscus Shopping Centre in Leanyer at lunchtime yesterday when the allegedly drunk passenger began arguing with the driver about a fare.

It is believed the driver ordered the man off the bus.

A friend of a witness told the NT News: "As he did, the man pulled out a watermelon and was making the driver flinch a few times before smashing it over his head. Then he punched him (and broke) the driver's eye glasses.

"Also the offender's four children, who looked under the age of 12, watched on."

The victim was not injured.

One of the men was described as of Aboriginal appearance, aged 30, about 183cm tall, with a lean build and a trimmed goatee beard. He also had scars on his lower right forearm that looked like cigarette burns.

He was wearing a blue faded singlet, black basketball style shorts and a black baseball cap with the letter "b" on the front.

The second man was described as of Caucasian appearance, aged about 20, 172cm tall with a slim build, a shaved head and clean shaven.He was wearing a plain white t-shirt and three-quarter length denim shorts.

The woman was described as of Aboriginal appearance, aged 20, 150cm tall, with black shoulder-length hair.

PHOTOGRAPHS of horrific cruelty to dogs in an NT [Aboriginal] community have been posted on a Facebook page - and then hastily taken down as authorities tried to cover up the shocking scandal.

The pictures showed two animals believed to have been attacked with machetes by boys. Another was of a dog with a broken leg with the bone exposed.

A third was of an animal with all its fur eaten away by mange.

Another dog was photographed getting around the community without the use of its back legs, which were either broken or lame.

The photographs were posted on Facebook by Kristine Love, who works for an animal welfare agency on Groote Eylandt.

And the NT News has been told that animal cruelty and neglect is rampant in some remote [Aboriginal] communities.

Many dogs are well cared for by their owners. But others are often beaten and left to find their own food.



Dirty apes! they just can't leave anything alone! have to mess with :- people, property, animals etc! I bet they don't get penalised for it.. The Govt. just pays off the elder to tell the Abbo lads hurting animals is "naughty"... then he gets his royalties and his Hilux the taxpayer paid for and gambles and pisses his money away. AUSTRALIA'S discrimination watchdog wants the government to water down its new hate laws to avoid litigation over water-cooler chats.

Discrimination has been redefined as "conduct that offends or insults" in the government's draft Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Bill.

But Australian Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs thinks the broad definition will spark too many lawsuits.

She said the words offend and insult "have to go".

"There is no need to set the threshold so low," she said.

"I would suggest the government consider taking the words 'offensive' and 'insulting' out (of the legislation).

"It does raise a risk of increased litigation".

Professor Triggs said discrimination cases should be based on the higher test of "intimidation, vilification or humiliation".

The Gillard government has drafted the new law to combine and update five sets of legislation banning discrimination on the grounds of race, sex, age or disability.

Professor Triggs said the words offend and insult had been "buried" in Section 198 of the Racial Discrimination Act, which will be replaced by the new legislation.

Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie has told the Senate inquiry the the new laws could damage freedom of speech.

"The use of subjective language such as 'insult' and 'offend' in the statutory definition of 'unfavourable treatment" may be interpreted to set a low threshold test for discrimination," he said.

"(This) will result in unmeritous complaints and lack of alignment with international human rights benchmarks that focus on the need for equality, rather than merely on the social value of being polite".

Queensland's Anti Discrimination Commission also wants the legislation be rewritten, so a "reasonable person" would have to find the conduct insulting or offensive.

Tasmania's Anti-Discrimination Commission, however, wants to keep the words "insult and offend" and add others as well.

"To provide greater certainty, this clause could also include the words humiliate, denigrate, ridicule or degrade to describe some of the specific types of behaviour that constitute unfavourable treatment," it told the inquiry.

The NSW Government has told the Senate inquiry the broader definition of discrimination "places unreasonable restrictions on freedom of speech".

"The words 'offend' and 'insult', in particular incorporate a very low threshold of unfavorable treatment," its submission says.

Victorian Attorney-General Robert Clark warned that people could be accused of discrimination over what they say in private conversations held in a public place, such as a club or office.

"Many people may be subjectively offended or insulted by the simple expression or manifestation of views different to their own," he told the inquiry.

"To make such expressions of views in workplaces, schools, clubs and sports prima facie unfavourable treatment and hence discrimination ... appears to substantially erode freedom of expression."

The Law Society of South Australia told the Senate inquiry it "condemned" the new definition.

"The robust expression of opinions, short of incitement to hatred, is a strength of our social and legal system," its submission states.

"It should not be curtailed to protect subjective offence that individuals may feel when their beliefs or attitudes are criticised."



As you can see Tasmania has got the dumbest opinion of the bunch (go figure?)

CORRECTIONS knocked back up to 15 prisoners at the weekend because the jail was full, and a disused watch-house could be the answer to hold law breakers until the new prison opens.

NT Prison Officers Association president Phil Tilbrook said more needed to be done because the prison population is expected to hit 1000 even before the new Holtze jail opens its doors by 2015.

He said the prison was "at capacity" - with 857 prisoners - on the weekend, with up to 15 remanded prisoners being taken to the Darwin watch-house last Sunday.

NT Correctional Services acting commissioner Phil Brown said the prison would only be able to accept a prisoner if another one was discharged.

He said the number was at 854 yesterday.

It seems that the Gaols are not keeping up with the level of Abbo lawlessness in the NT! Thank those bloody do-gooders always helping the Abbos out!
I think the only thing these Abbos understand would be to be put in stocks and lashed with a cat-o-nine tails! Who's got to pay for more Gaol facilities and staff to run them?
In the meantime because the Gaol is full and they can't take prisoners I guess the crooks get out on bail and do more monkey business.

SOME 50,000 CDs of Christmas carols sent to households in Germany by a children's charity actually contained the words to pro-Nazi songs sung by the Hitler Youth movement, German public radio NDR reports.            
Spokesman for the SOS Children's Villages charity, Roger Damm, told NDR the CDs could have been hacked by a far-right group.
Both the German branch of the charity and the production company that made the CD have lodged a complaint in Munich for incitement to hatred, Damm said.
