MORE than 1000 people have formed a "ring of peacePISS" outside Oslo's main synagogueswinagogue at the initiative of a group of young Muslims. 
 
THE event in the Norwegian capital follows a series of attacks against Jews in Europe, including the terror attacks in Paris in January and in neighbouring Denmark last week.

One of the organisers of Saturday's event in Oslo, Hajrah Arshad said the gathering shows "that Islam is about love and unity".

"We want to demonstrate that Jews and Muslims do not hate each other," co-organiser Zeeshan Abdullah told the crowd, standing in a half-circle before the white synagogue.

"We do not want individuals to define what Islam is for the rest of us."

"There are many more peace-mongers than warmongers," he added.

Norway's Chief Rabbi Michael Melchior sang the traditional Jewish end of Sabbath song outside the synagogue before the large crowd holding hands.

Co-organiser Hassan Raja said it was the first time he heard the song.

Ervin Kohn, head of Oslo's Jewish community, called the gathering in sub-zero temperatures "unique".
Several European countries have seen an increase in anti-Semitic incidents recently, starting when the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza intensified last year.

In Paris, three Muslim gunmen killed 17 people at a kosher grocery, the offices of weekly Charlie Hebdo and elsewhere in early January. Last week a single assailant in Copenhagen killed a Jewish security guard outside a synagogue and a Danish filmmaker attending a free speech event.

CARLA McGrath does not think being told to "lighten up" over a racist joke aired on popular American comedy show 2 Broke Girls is at all amusing. 
 
Australia's former prime minister Kevin Rudd has called on the show to apologise after a recent episode featured a male character describing an Australian girl he had been flirting with as "part Aboriginal, but she has a great personality!".

Ms McGrath, head of sustainability at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, said that she had been disappointed the general reaction to a news.com.au article on the offensive joke was that indigenous people should "lighten up" and stop being so precious.

"Being a Torres Straight Islander woman working in this space, very little surprises me. It's interesting when we have, as Australians, this idea that everybody needs to lighten up, that things aren't that bad and we should be able to make jokes about whatever we like, whenever we like."



"It's not about being hypersensitive ... do we want to create a society where it's OK to say to any young person the things that were said on that TV program? I don't think we do, I don't think that any person would think that if it was about their own child or their own family.

"There is absolutely a place for comedy, I think what is being missed about this is that impact about everyday casual racism of the people who are targets. It is real and it is great and when we're talking about generations, we have a growing population, and that is a whole huge growing generation of young impressionable people," she said.

"And if that's what the General Australian narrative is saying to them about their worth, there's no way that you can believe that there's not an impact that comes from that.

"For so long Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people have been positioned as the other and it's become OK to say stuff, and if we let it slide we're doing irreparable damage."

Ms McGrath said she had not watched the 2 Broke Girls episode but her first thought on reading about it was "where has that come from? How has that perception manifested itself at an international level?"

She said that her organisation was called the National Centre of indigenous Excellence and this was in direct response to the negative perceptions held by the general public.

"The change of language was intentional here, it is very important ... it's an intentional way of changing that conversation.

"That's very much what this story is all about, people have very different views about what impact language can have on people. But I don't think anyone generally believes that if you tell a young person they are worthless, or that they are disadvantaged enough times in their life that eventually it's not going to have some kind of impact.

"Really the two things are quite closely linked, that very intentional shift in language and conversation is exactly what we're trying to embody in what we do, and seeing these things pop up in our everyday conversation, on our television screens, sadly it doesn't surprise me."

Ms McGrath said she hoped Channel 9 would eventually give a meaningful response.

"Whether we like to believe it or not, racism exists in Australia, and it is in a variety of forms, it can be very in your face and it can be much more covert, such as a line in a television program.

"Young people do and young people are consuming this stuff consistently. It's very unfortunate that our youth suicide rates are higher than any others in this nation, its abominable."

AN anti-Islamic group that wants to "reclaim" Adelaide from minorities will stage a public rally in the city, prompting fear among local Muslims it will incite a racist backlash. 
 
Almost 600 people have indicated on Reclaim Australia Rally's Facebook page they will attend the Adelaide rally on April 4.

Thousands of people across the country have also said they will attend similar rallies in other cities.

Premier Jay Weatherill condemned the rally but stopped short of calling for it to be banned.

"It is utterly inconsistent with the South Australia we want to live in," he said.

"Facebook pages and rallies of this nature are not welcome and just show a complete lack of understanding of Australia's culture."

Adelaide's Islamic community has expressed concerns it may become a target of the rally.



Islamic Society of South Australia president Dr Waleed Alkhazrajy said he was worried the rally could incite racism towards local Muslims.

"It is very sad to see, in Australia, people invest heavily in their effort to build up and promote intolerance rather than reach out to all sections of the beautiful fabric of our society," he said.

"Without a leadership approach from the media, the government and the community to address these issues, we are afraid we might soon lose more people to the ignorant camp."

The group's Facebook page says people should gather in Elder Park to sign petitions, discuss the group's "points of interest" and distribute "a handout with some chants that we will be using".

A police spokesman said officers were aware of the rally and would closely monitor it to ensure public safety.

"Eastern Adelaide Local Service Area police are aware of the rally and will plan ahead to ensure both the safety of the wider community and that it is conducted in a legal and appropriate manner," he said.

The planned rally comes after Salisbury councillors were threatened by another anti-Islamic group because the council approved a development application for a mosque last month.

Dr Alkhazrajy said the local Islamic community must not be intimidated by the kind of racism expected to be on display at the rally.

"We can't tell people to change the way they go about their lives because that's what this type of intolerance is trying to do," he said.

Despite the rally planning to start in Elder Park, Adelaide City Council said it was powerless to stop it.

"Council has no jurisdiction to halt a rally that is gathering in a public space," council spokesman David Hill said.

A black French man pushed off a Paris metro train and racially abused by Chelsea supporters on Thursday made an official complaint to police and demanded that the fans be punished.

"These people, these English supporters, must be found, punished and locked up," the victim of the widely condemned assault told Le Parisien newspaper.

The man, who has not been officially identified but was named as 33-year-old Souleymane S by Le Parisien, had been unaware of the row caused by Tuesday night's incident until found by the newspaper.

He went to a police station on Thursday to make his complaint.

French and British police have already launched a hunt for the self-proclaimed racist fans after the episode in a central Paris metro station before Chelsea's 1-1 Champions League draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

Amateur video footage showed Chelsea fans repeatedly pushing Souleymane S. back off the train as he tried to board and then chanting: "We're racist, we're racist, and that's the way we like it!"

"I didn't know I was being filmed. The fact that it's being talked about has given me the courage to go and file a complaint with the police," Souleymane S, said.

The man recounted: "I wanted to get into the carriage but a group of English fans were blocking me and pushing me off.

"They were saying to me things in English but I didn't really understand the meaning of their words.

"I realised they were targeting me because of the colour of my skin. You know I live with racism, I wasn't totally surprised at what happened even if this was the first time it'd happened in the metro.

"I returned home without saying anything about it to anyone, not my wife, nor my children. What can I tell my kids? That papa was shoved in the metro because he's black? That wouldn't help things at all."

The man was born in Paris to Mauritanian parents.

The newspaper reported that Souleymane S. lives north of Paris and works near the Richelieu-Drouot metro station where Tuesday's incident took place.

It was at the station that Le Parisien say they came across him on Wednesday.

According to the paper, he was unaware of the furore the story had stirred up.

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into "deliberate racial violence on public transport". London police said they would assist the French investigation.

In a statement, Chelsea called the incident "abhorrent". The club has called on its fans to help identify the supporters involved in the abuse.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron called the incident "extremely disturbing".

Activist groups have already called on football's leadership to do more to combat racism in the game.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand called the incident "disgraceful behaviour" but questioned whether the football powers want to do more.

"Does football want to change this? Do the people in the game that hold the power really want to put the hard yards in to eradicate racism?" Ferdinand said in a Twitter comment.

A DRUNK Norwegian tourist was viciously attacked twice in separate sexual assaults as she tried to make her way home from a boozy night out. 
 
The 23-year-old had spent the afternoon drinking at a barbecue in Essex, in May last year, a UK court heard.

Marius Stakele, 24, and Aftab Mohammed, 39, who are unknown to each other, allegedly forced themselves on the woman just hours apart after she asked for their help getting home.

The intoxicated victim, had no idea the second attack had taken place until police carried out DNA tests.

She was so drunk she believed she was at London's Heathrow Airport when she approached Stakele and his friend at Canning Town station, the court heard.

Court evidence alleges they walked with her towards a highway overpass where Stakele smashed her head against a concrete wall and raped her.

She later reported the attack to police and DNA tests revealed she had been raped by a second man that same night.

Prior to the overpass attack, there was a period from midnight to 4am when the victim doesn't have any recollection at all, during which time the prosecution said she was raped by the second man, Mr Mohammed.

He told the court the victim had knocked on the window of his booth guarding a building site where he worked and begged him for a ride home.

Mohammed told police he refused because it was against company policy, but eventually changed his mind.

UK's Metro reports that Prosecutor Pam Oon said: "He said he took her to an area of waste ground and that's where they had sex and he didn't force her — out of concern he gave her money to get home."

CCTV footage from Canning Town station showed Mohammed dropping the young woman off in his work car.

Copenhagen police have detained two men suspected of aiding a gunman who killed two people in double attacks in the Danish capital over the weekend.

'The two men are suspected of aiding and abetting the perpetrator in connection with the shooting attacks at Krudttoenden (cultural centre) and (the synagogue) in Krystalgade,' police said in a statement.The gunman behind two deadly attacks in Copenhagen may have been inspired by last month's Islamist shootings in Paris, police say.

The man, believed to be the sole perpetrator of what Denmark's prime minister is calling 'a cynical act of terror', was previously known to intelligence services. He 'may have been inspired by the events that took place in Paris a few weeks ago', Jens Madsen from the Security and Intelligence Service told reporters on Sunday. He added the man may 'generally have been inspired by militant Islamist propaganda issued by Islamic State and other terror organisations'.

He also said police were looking into the possibility the gunman had travelled to Syria or Iraq. The shooter, who was not further identified, is believed responsible for two separate attacks that have shocked Denmark's usually peaceful capital.

On Saturday, a 55-year-old man was killed at a panel discussion about Islam and free speech attended by Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist behind a controversial caricature of the Prophet Mohammed. In the second attack, a 37-year-old Jewish man was killed outside Copenhagen's main synagogue early on Sunday. Five police officers were wounded in the two incidents.

'We believe the same man was behind both shootings and we also believe the perpetrator who was shot by the police action force at Noerrebro station is the person behind the two attacks,' senior police official Torben Moelgaard Jensen said. The first lethal attacks on Danish soil in decades were branded 'deplorable' by the United States and triggered condemnation around the world.

'We have experienced the ugly taste of fear and powerlessness which terror hopes to create,' Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt told a briefing, saying Denmark was experiencing 'a day of sorrow'.

'We will defend our democracy and we will defend Denmark at any time,' she said. The killing of the suspected attacker capped a massive police manhunt.

The shootout took place shortly before dawn in the neighbourhood of Noerrebro, where police had been keeping an address under observation. They said video surveillance had led them to believe the man killed by officers was behind both attacks but they were still investigating whether he was acting alone.

The shooting came at the end of a night of fear that had gripped the city of about one million. The central area of Copenhagen that is home to both the synagogue and Noerreport station, the country's busiest rail hub, was cordoned off by police carrying machine guns. When Bill Shorten asked him about the Human Rights Commission report on children in immigration detention, Abbott said it was a question of "baffling folly", and the commission should write to former immigration minister Scott Morrison to congratulate him on stopping the boats and saving people from drowning.
When Shorten asked him about the bad job figures, he retorted that Victorian Labor had "crushed" 7000 jobs that would have been created by the East West Link project.
But when he was asked about building submarines in job-strapped South Australia, Abbott went too far.


Under Labor, there was a "holocaust of jobs in defence industries", he said.
There's probably not a more loaded word in the language, with its potency increased by the recent ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, which were attended by Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.


As opposition MPs roared in outrage, Abbott swiftly withdrew and substituted the word decimation.
But he remained uber-aggressive.
When asked to explain how Khaled Sharrouf could leave Australia despite being on a terrorist watch-list, he immediately blamed Labor's system, which his government hadn't had time to change.
Abbott also made a virtue out of breaking an election promise, which, when Labor did it, was a mortal sin.

An enraged McDonald's worker has been filmed throwing a massive tantrum and trashing the restaurant after being fired.

The unidentified worker hurled abuse at his colleagues while smashing glasses and throwing appliances, plates, cutlery and tomato sauce behind the counter.

The furious worker was filmed marching back and forth behind the counter while shouting expletives.

British metal band Napalm Death has written a letter to President Widodo, after he declared he was a fan of them during last year's election campaign when he proclaimed his love for Napalm Death alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Lamb of God.

Vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway posted a "direct appeal" to him on Napalm Death's Facebook page - which has more than 700,000 followers.

His messaage stated: "As a follower of our band Napalm Death, you would appreciate that our lyrics and ethos challenge the unbroken cycle of violence in the world, whether it comes from a state or as an individual."

"I understand that you are standing as a leader determined to change things for the better, and so I believe granting clemency would be a major step forward in this pursuit of betterment. I appreciate that heroin can be damaging on many levels, but I believe that this is a much deeper issue that cannot be changed or altered by simply taking away the lives of people."

Napalm Death produces grindcore/metal music, which has elements of hardcore punk, industrial music and death metal.

The band's appeal on behalf of Chan and Sukumaran comes as Indonesia's attorney-general has confirmed the pair are in the next group of death row prisoners to be executed.

When committing a crime, it's unwise to record evidence and post it to social media.. 
 
A video uploaded to Facebook by some Territory men shows the moment they thought it was a good idea to attach a portaloo to the back of the ute and drag it along on the road.

The dunny can be swinging wildly across the road as sparks fly and their mates in the vehicle behind film the whole thing.

NT Police duty superintendent Bob Harrison couldn't believe his eyes ... or that the crew were stupid enough to post the illegal activity on social media afterwards.

"I am actually incredulous after watching this video," he said.
Mr Harrison suggested not only had they destroyed the property of another person but also damaged the road surface and destroyed a road side sign.

"The fact that it emitted sparks poses a danger to anyone in the area," he said.

"They are obviously proud of their achievement but I would say that their age matches their shoe size."

The video was taken down not long after it was posted but in a tough lesson on how technology works the offenders might find it's a bit too late.

THE only thing bogans seem to love more than an icy cold stubby on Australia Day is sharing their offensive views with the world. 
 
There is nothing like listening to the all too familiar drawl of an Aussie bogan while they complain about people from overseas coming to take over their country – the irony apparently lost on them.

What's that old saying? Opinions are like arseholes: everybody's got one and most of them stink. Well, something like that, anyway.

Over the past few months I've noticed an alarming trend of people proclaiming they have a right to say whatever they want without having their opinion "censored".

Unsurprisingly, the common denominator between all of these opinions seems to be that they are discriminatory or extremely offensive in nature.

Now freedom of speech is a great idea in theory. Everybody is technically allowed to have an opinion – hell, mine are published every week much to the chagrin of some.

But somewhere along the line, it seems as though free speech has become the go-to catchcry of bogan Australia.

How dare we deprive them of their right to openly be bigots? It is their God-given right to yell their offensive views from the rooftops, if they want.



After all, it's right there in the Australian constitution. Oh wait, no it's not.

Can I really blame Australians for thinking we have explicit freedom of speech rights when we live in a country oversaturated by American media and pop culture?

Freedom of speech is most definitely protected by the First Amendment in the United States of America's constitution, and it is commonly referred to in films and television shows illegally downloaded here. But last I checked, despite many attempts by Prime Minister Tony Abbott to turn us into America-lite, this is not the United States of Oz.

Some argue that freedom of speech is listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What they seem to ignore­ is the fact it also states that it is subject to restrictions.

You're allowed to hold an opinion and you are allowed to share it with the world, but there can still be repercussions.







   

For instance, if you start telling everybody down at the local pub that Joe Blow is a wife basher, rapist or a paedophile, you are still open to getting sued for defamation.

If you discriminate against someone because of their age, gender, race or disability, you are also leaving yourself open to the possibility of a lawsuit.

A good example of this would be the woman in Western Australia who recently had to pay her ex-husband $12,500 compensation after she accused him of domestic abuse in a Facebook post.

Or when controversial News Corp columnist Andrew Bolt was found in court to have breached the Racial Discrimination Act when he implied light-skinned people who identified as Aboriginal did so for personal gain.



Having an opinion is all fun and games until you have to pay someone thousands of dollars­ in compensation.

Working in the media, we know better than anybody (except maybe lawyers) that we can be held accountable for what we say and write.

If there is any doubt about the possible legal repercussions of something we have written, it is sent to a legal team who go over it with a fine-tooth comb.

Some of the juiciest parts of stories are often removed, and sometimes whole stories are squashed because of the legal ramifications we face from printing them.

Unfortunately for the public, sending your opinion off to an expert legal team is not exactly financially viable. You know what is a cheap alternative? Thinking before you speak, or before publishing your opinion on social media.

No doubt there are plenty of people on the internet who share your opinion. Stupid people usually talk the loudest.

However, when push comes to shove and you get sued over your very intelligent, well-rounded and educated opinion, "other people agreed" isn't really going to stand up as an excuse in a court of law. And do you really think they are going to be standing there backing you up?

One of the most amusing things about those who use freedom of speech as a defence is the hypocritical fact that it only applies to their opinion.

If anyone else has something to say that differs from their opinion, they automatically start attacking them.

For instance, when Aboriginal people spoke out against Jessica Mauboy performing at the Australia Day concert in Sydney, everybody attacked them for their "us and them" attitude creating a divide.

You know, the same "us and them" attitude adopted when discussing Muslims, gay people or any other minority.



I'm a firm believer that everybody has the right to make up their own mind about things. I also think people should be allowed to share their opinions with the world without being persecuted.

The only exception to this – which is backed up by law (and this is where the bogans' freedom of speech catchcry falls short) – is when it discriminates against someone.

While growing up, I always rolled my eyes at the saying 'if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all'.

After all one of my favourite pastimes is being offensively politically incorrect.

But as we grow up and mature­, something I am still admittedly doing now at 28, we are meant to learn to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong.

Now for some reason that saying makes perfect sense to me, and with the rise of social media, is more apt than ever.

With Australia Day tomorrow, it's about time we as a country worry more about becoming­ better people than our "right to free speech" – which is just used to show the rest of the world how terribly backwards we are at times.

Sometimes your opinion is just better kept to yourself.

POLICE in a Mexican border city said that a drone overloaded with illicit methamphetamine crashed into a supermarket parking lot near the US border. 
 
Tijuana police spokesman Jorge Morrua said authorities were alerted after the drone fell on Tuesday night near the San Ysidro crossing at Mexico's border with California.

Six packets of the drug, weighing more than six pounds, were taped to the six-propeller remote-controlled aircraft.

Morrua said authorities are investigating where the flight originated and who was controlling it. He said it was not the first time they had seen drones used for smuggling drugs across the border.

Other innovative efforts have included catapults, ultralight aircraft and tunnels.

In April, authorities in South Carolina found a drone outside the fence of a prison that had been carrying cellphones, marijuana and tobacco.

TERRITORY teachers are being forced to cope with a spike in school violence and "lack of consequences" for the offenders - who are getting younger, an education union boss warns. 
 
One teacher reportedly had to claim worker's compensation when she spent weeks recovering from a "whiplash" injury after a student attacked her.

Education Department figures obtained by the NT News show student attacks on teachers have risen more than 38 per cent from 90 in 2013 to 125 last year, which equates to an average of three each week across the NT.



Even more concerning, student assaults on fellow students increased more than 40 per cent to 814 in 2014 — up from 566 the previous year.

Physical assaults recognised in reporting include shirt-fronting, striking, throwing objects, hip and shouldering and biting.

Australian Education Union NT president Jarvis Ryan said staff deserved better support.

"Teachers should be able to put students in a different environment (to control behaviour issues)," he said.

"More young studentsboongs are showing violent behaviour — even those in primary school.

"It's a difficult issue and teachers get frustrated about the lack of discipline and consequences for students."

The most marked rise in attacks in one region was in Palmerston and rural Darwin.

The area saw 170 reported assauls on kids in 2013, which leaped to 271 last year.

There were 49 assaults on teachers in 2014 — up more than 50 per cent from 27.

Mr Ryan said: "We know that there are problems with violence in schools around Palmerston city."

Education Department deputy chief Susan Bowden said the shocking increase in recorded assaults was due to a "new method of collecting student behaviour data and robust system for reporting behavioural incidents".

She said the numbers reflected recidivist violence among some students.

A RURAL Danish town is bringing sexy back. 
 
The residents of Thisted, population 13,000 (and growing), have just agreed to spend more time making babies. Lots of babies. The mood is up in Thisted.

The idea is that if people make babies, those babies will grow up to live in Thisted and shop in Thisted and go to schools in Thisted. Because right now those places are seriously under-utilised.

Thisted's birthrate has stalled — it is the lowest in Denmark at 1.6 babies per family — and the measure is hoped to keep crucial services including schools and childcare centres open.

It's not the first time Thisted residents have talked openly about the birds and the bees.

Previous attempts to encourage copulation include prize draws for positive pregnancy tests and dating websites for people ready to start a family. A 'Do it for Denmark' ad campaign last year urged Danes to have more sex on vacation.

"The threat of shutting schools is over for now. We just need to figure out how to monitor the plan and see how many more children come along. Our intention is to create a vibrant community and attract new families. Many are very excited about the new plan."

A FORMER Katherine High School teacher who lost the lower half of his leg in a brutal student attack has launched legal action so he can afford ongoing medical costs. 
 
David Arnold's left leg was stomped on by three students in 2008. Ongoing infections meant it had to be amputated from the knee down in 2012.

A faulty prosthesis caused additional damage, leaving him wheelchair-bound for the past 15 months.

"I haven't been able to do anything,'' he said.

Mr Arnold will undergo his 13th round of surgery next week.

The 2005 Teacher of the Year said it was his "last throw of the dice" to walk again.

"If it doesn't work it means I will be restricted to this bloody wheelchair for the rest of my life,'' he said.

"It has to work."

Mr Arnold's lawyer, Leeha James, told the NT News the latest court proceedings were so he could "access certain rehabilitation benefits that have ceased".

Catherine Weber from the Department of Education said Mr Arnold was "disputing some changes to his entitlements" under the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act.

She denied reports the department had not assisted the former Territory teacher.

"Mr Arnold has been fully supported by the school and department since the incident,'' she said.

"Mr Arnold has received entitlements under the Act as determined by TIO, which has included weekly payments, ongoing medical treatment, rehabilitation and household and travel assistance."

Media reports at the time of his amputation claimed Mr Arnold had received minimal assistance from the department "because the school did not report the matter to police at the time".

Seven years later, Mr Arnold said he was trying to move on with his life.

"I haven't come to accept it but I've come to the conclusion that if you dwell on those things it's not going to help you,'' he said.

Mr Arnold, now 66 and living in Victoria, said he wanted to return to teaching.

"I've been extremely restricted and I just want to get out of this bloody chair and have the opportunity to get back on with my life,'' he said.

Doctors have told Mr Arnold that if next week's operation is a success, he could be walking with a prosthetic leg within six or seven months.

IT was the meltdown to end all meltdowns. A 10 year-old boy had an epic tantrum and went on a rampage through a Florida store, knocking items from shelves in almost every aisle. 
 
The boy left a trail of destruction in Dollar General and it only ended when a store employee grabbed him and dragged him out of the store.

But that was only after the boy threatened to hit a customer screaming, "I'm not afraid to do it."

Many of the customers just stood in shock and watched the boy's stunning behaviour, but one onlooker was so appalled they called police.

On the video a man can be heard calling the boy "jit" which is apparently prison slang for someone younger than you.

The boy was alone in the store but it wasn't known when it was filmed, although it was posted online on December 9.

A DARWIN man has given the people of the Northern Territory a visual guide on how not to use an ATM. 

    NT Police are investigating the incident in which a man used an explosive to destroy a Winnellie ATM this morning - in the process knocking himself backwards.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Karl Day said alarms sounded at the Winnellie ANZ bank on the corner of Albatross St and Catterhun St at about 3.45am.
Detectives reviewed CCTV footage from the location which shows a man attend the location, light an explosive and within seconds the item exploded, knocking the man over backwards. The man then ran from the scene.

NO contraception, no dole – that's the view of an ex-Labor Minister who believes welfare should be linked to compulsory contraception. 
 
Gary Johns, writing in The Australian, suggests there should be "no taxpayer inducement to have children".

The former MP who served in the Keating government admits such a measure will "undoubtedly affect strugglers, [and] ... Aboriginal and Islander people in great proportions".

"But the idea that someone can have the taxpayer, as of right, fund the choice to have a child is repugnant."

According to Mr Johns larger families of past generations "were the result of the combination of absent contraception and the need to have many children, in order that some survive to care for parents in old age".

But he says such conditions now don't apply.

"Infant mortality is minuscule in all sectors of society, and the taxpayer picks up the tab for aged care.

"Potential parents of poor means, poor skills or bad character will choose to have children. So be it.

"But no one should enter parenthood while on a benefit."

The ex-Minister claims "it is better to avoid having children until such time as parents can afford them".

"No amount of 'intervention' after the fact can make up for the strife that many parents bring down on their ­children."

Mr Johns goes on to cite two recent examples over Christmas.

"Both happened to be indigenous, but of course, many non-indigenous cases abound," he says.

"The first, in Cairns, involved a single mother with nine children from five fathers.

"Better this woman had fewer children. Better men on benefits also could be prevented from having children."

Many social media users have taken to Twitter to express their views after reading Johns's piece.

ONE of the things I love most about the Territory is how open-minded and easygoing the majority of people are. 
 
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of loudmouthed, small-minded rednecks, but on the whole, this place is all right.

One thing that has always struck me as strange considering the prevalence of gay people here — Alice Springs is the "lesbian capital of Australia" (I lived there for two years, trust me it's true) and there are vibrant gay cultures across the Top End — is the lack of rights we actually have.

It has taken me a long time to realise and come to terms with the fact that getting married is probably not in my future — by choice.

But if I did want to get married, surely I would want it to be in the place I have proudly called my home for six years — yet it would be impossible.



I could travel overseas to somewhere it is legal like New Zealand, but it would not be recognised here — the place most important to me: home.

At a time like Christmas, seeing families coming together to celebrate really illustrates what we're missing out on.

Take a look around your workplace, your school, your gym — wherever you spend a good chunk of your time.

It is guaranteed you know, or interact with a gay person, whether you realise it or not.

I have seen first-hand how worked up Territorians get when their right to voluntary euthanasia, to buy non-halal certified food, to hunt pigs or own firearms is questioned.

I also saw how indignant Territorians became when Dave Tollner used gay slurs against a work colleague they have probably never met.

But why do we not show that same impassioned fury when our friend, workmate, or family member are refused the chance to make the ultimate expression of love?

Why do people in power, like Tollner who has a gay mother and nephew, or Tony Abbott who has a gay sister, refuse to take a stand?

Tollner was quoted as saying he was fundamentally a libertarian and would not get in the way of gay marriage, but there are items higher on the agenda to deal with.

Just let me put this out there — can you imagine if it was reversed and heterosexual people were told their rights were not high on the agenda?

Imagine the uproar. There would be riots in the streets.

But this is not about the open-minded Tollner, who has no qualms welcoming gay family members into his home.

Though let's be real — "I have gay family" is basically the equivalent of "I have a black friend so I can't be racist".

Our rights are just not as important as the development of Northern Australia or bringing the budget out of deficit.

Let's just ignore the fact that legalising gay marriage in New York City provided a $A318 million boost to its economy.

Or that Australia lost an estimated $54m when more than a thousand gay couples travelled to New Zealand to marry after it was legalised there.

Why would the Government want to profit from love when they can sell off our assets like TIO for less than that?

And it would not just be the Government that would profit — everything would get a much-needed injection of money. If the Territory was the first place in Australia to legalise gay marriage, the tourism sector would explode — which in effect would mean more employment and development.

Isn't that what the NT Government have been harping on about all this time?

Wouldn't legalising gay marriage actually be a means to an end?


TO REFUSE gay people the opportunity to get married is effectively saying we are lesser people and do not deserve to have the same rights as heterosexual people.

We live and work beside you, we bleed just like you — it is not absurd to think we deserve the same rights as you.

Some will say it is about religion: "marriage is a sacred Christian rite".

But any person with a history book or Google can tell you that marriage predates Christianity.

At the end of the day it is not about religion — it has simply never been about religion.

You don't even have to step foot into a church to get married. It is a government-legislated process.

It all comes down to personal prejudice.

Surely we can all agree that gay marriage is the last thing we need to worry about corrupting religion when, for instance, there is a Catholic brother charged with 252 child sexual assault offences.

I have never considered myself an activist by any means. The idea of taking to the streets to protest, carrying large signs, has never really appealed to me.

And despite the fact I am a hopeless romantic, the idea of getting married is not on my agenda. But that does not mean I do not deserve the right if I wanted to.

We as Territorians, and as Australians, should be leading the way with human rights.

We pride ourselves on being the lucky country, yet we continue to alienate and segregate whole minorities.

The real question is — do you stand behind antiquated belief systems or do you stand for basic human decency?

When can they just see that Homosexuals can't have children naturally?! When can they just see that kids deserve to have a male and female parent?

I know you can't ever stop homosexuality, but it needs to be stuck back in the closet.

Mr Stoker had no idea how lucky his escape was.

He went in to Sydney Hospital to have some stitches removed and only realised a siege was taking place when he came out.

"I had no idea what was going on," Mr Stoker said.

"When I found out I was pretty shaken up. I am going to buy a lottery ticket right now."

Meanwhile, exclusion zones around the Martin Place siege have been pushed back as members of the public nervously wait for developments in the apparent terrorist event.

Police moved a cordon on Macquarie St south to Hyde Park about 1.45pm and shut businesses, office buildings and the Land and Environment Court on the street.

Other exclusion zones were widened around the Lindt cafe, where gunmen with an Islamic terrorist flag were holding shoppers and staff hostage.



Parliament House, adjacent Martin Place, was shut earlier in the day as the siege began.

At Sydney Hospital, also on Macquarie St, all elective surgeries were cancelled, no new patients were being admitted and people already in the building were being asked to leave via a rear exit.

Medical staff at the hospital, which is about 500m from the siege, were being asked to stay on duty in apparent readiness for casualties.

Nervous office staff, many of them evacuated from nearby buildings, gathered around cafe TV screens to watch the hostage drama unfolding.



Many watched Prime Minister Tony Abbott's national address intently.

Others continued to work, using laptops and tablets at cafe tables.

Police carrying sniper rifles entered Martin Place about one hour after the siege began.

Earlier, witnesses described seeing cafe staff and shoppers pinned up against the building's front window, with their arms raised and a black and white IS flag in the window.



Janice Johnson saw the drama unfold from a cafe opposite the Lindt building.

"There was an Islamic State flag in the window and the people in the cafe window had their eyes closed and some had their heads bowed," she said.

"Police were sneaking up to the door with their guns drawn.

"We were told to get to the back of the room and were then ordered to evacuate."

Heavily armed police cleared Martin Place as the attack unfolded.

Ms Johnson said she was warned by police about a possible imminent explosion.

Ambulances were stationed around Martin Place to attend to any casualties.

Sheila McLaughlin described how she was walking to work at her office next to the Lindt cafe when the hostages were being taken.

"I heard shouting coming from inside the cafe and then the doors slammed shut," she said.

"I was probably about 20m away when it happened and I'm still shaking because it could have been me."

The NT government's proposed work-for-the-dole scheme is tantamount to slave labour, Aboriginal traditional owners say. 
 
The Original Peoples Freedom Movement (OPFM) says the scheme is punitive and exploitative and will make people living in remote areas work five days a week over 52 weeks to receive the dole.

"This is nothing but an outrageous land grab and obscene discriminatory policy that is being only implemented against one people without even the guise of consultation or negotiation," OPFM founder Tauto Sansbury told AAP.

"It's a slave labour opportunity."

He said the remote work-for-the-dole policy was more discriminatory than the urban plan, and didn't outline occupational health and safety, holiday pay, or superannuation.

"Twenty-five hours a week and you work for what you're already entitled to get," he said.

Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion said the scheme would prepare people in remote communities for employment.

"There are some very capable people in the communities, and we need to make sure they're work ready and working for the dole," he told reporters in Darwin on Monday.

"We need youth workers, people in aged care, in the education system, in the creches." However, he conceded there were fewer jobs available in remote communities and most were held by non-indigenous people.

He said the government wanted to make the scheme as work-like as possible, and would determine how many days people would get off for cultural, holiday and sick leave.

OPFM spokesman Paul Spearim Jnr said the policy would force communities to come into already disease-ridden, overcrowded and poverty-riddled townships indigenous people had escaped from over 40 years ago.

A country's flag is part of its inner self, its soul. Our flag reminds us who we are and where we came from.

TRENT Giles admitted he had some pretty strong opinions when it came to Aboriginal people.

But the trio, along with three other First Contact participants, were forced to question everything they know in the eye-opening and confronting SBS documentary which goes to air tonight.

First Contact, hosted and led by veteran journalist Ray Martin has been described as provocative with a few surprises along the way, including one contestant who actually does leave the show.

All six participants were taken on a journey which tested them to their limits, emotionally and physically, forcing them to confront their own stereotypes and prejudices.

Martin warns them it will not be an easy journey.

For law enforcement officer Trent, the truth was even more shocking than he ever imagined.

The 28-year-old found himself stripsearched and incarcerated in a prison full of indigenous inmates during the four-week filming.

A SOUTH Australian company has bowed to a social media campaign and scrapped its halal certification, costing it a contract with the Middle East's biggest airline. 
 
Fleurieu Milk Company, and other South Australian food and drink manufacturers such as Vili's and Coopers, have been targeted by Facebook pages like Halal Choices and Boycott Halal in Australia for their decision to pursue the certification. Halal is a term used by Muslims meaning the food has been prepared or slaughtered according to ­Islamic law.

Fleurieu Milk Company sales and marketing manager Nick Hutchinson said the decision to drop the halal certification would mean the Myponga-based dairy would lose a yoghurt supply deal with Emirates worth around $50,000 a year.

Mr Hutchinson said the decision was regrettable, but that the company had decided the possible damage to its brand outweighed the benefits of being halal certified.

"We've copped a pasting online," he said.

"We saw the barrage of comments on these sites and the calls to boycott our products and decided it wasn't worth it. I suppose we've given in to a vocal minority.

"It is important for people to realise that being a business owner in Australia can be challenging. In order to remain financially viable companies are forced to look to expand into new markets. Fleurieu Milk had the opportunity to supply Emirates airlines given they became halal approved. We decided the $1000 annual fee was worth it and proceeded."


The anti-halal sites make a number of claims about the certification, including that it is essentially a religious tax that forces up the price of food, that it is cruel to slaughtered animals and that money could be used to fund Islamist terrorists overseas. The sites encourage consumers to boycott any products displaying the halal accreditation symbol.

Mr Hutchinson said he believed the anti-halal sites were wrong in targeting Australian food producers.

"Other company's make tens of millions of dollars through being halal certified and cannot walk away like we have," Mr Hutchinson said. "These business owners are true-blue Aussies bringing a lot of international dollars back into the local economy and would prefer not to pay the certification fee as well.

"The question must be asked: what is worse – paying the $1000 fee or making hundreds of employees around SA redundant?

"People will argue for both sides, but what we want people to ask themselves is 'are you directing your anger in the right direction?' Do these business owners, in our case the local farmers, deserve this or should you be petitioning above them to stop the fee having to be paid?"


Sadly the way things are going everyone is doing business with non white neighbours to get the economy up. It is a wonder they even bowed down to the online campaigners that "bullied" them with the anti Halal stance.

THE three men involved in this morning's burqa brouhaha in Parliament have moved on as promised - this time it's to Commonwealth Bank. 
 
Meanwhile, information has emerged on one of the three men involved.

Sergio Redegalli - otherwise known as the guy with the ponytail in the KKK garb - is a known supporter of the ban the burqa movement.

In 2010, Mr Redegalli painted a mural urging governments to "say no to the burqas" in the inner-city suburb of Newtown in Sydney's inner-west.

According to the Daily Telegraph, he said his message was not anti-muslim, nor anti-women.

"If you let it [the practice of covering your face] go, someone, somewhere down the line will say we would like Sharia Law," he said at the time.

Mr Redegalli also drives a ute with stickers on the front saying "Australians have nothing to hide, say no to burqas".

Unsurprisingly, Senator Cory Bernadi praised Mr Redegalli's in 2011 as "an eloquent spokesman for freedom of speech".

But, Bernadi wrote, "even if I didn't share Mr Redegalli's views, it is hard to accept that any sensible person could endorse the violent campaign of hate that he has been subject to.
Earlier today, on the one week anniversary of the dumping of the federal Parliament's burqa-ban, three men in costumes have attempted to enter Parliament dressed in various controversial garb.

The costumes include a KKK hood, niqab and a helmet.

The three men from the group 'Faceless' said they wanted to see the burqa and all facial coverings banned.

Just a week after the burqa ban was overturned, the trio had to identify themselves to security.

"It's fantastic that we were not allowed in," one of them said, praising security.

Another man wearing a burqa was also allowed to enter.

According to 2GB reporter Stephanie Borys, who is at the scene, the three men were asked to take their coverings off.

When they did, a black headress was revealed underneath.

A large security presence, including AFP officers and parliament security have reportedly handled it well.

The three men allegedly plan to target a bank next.

When asked how it would make Muslim women feel, they said they "couldn't care less", and wanted all burqas banned, full stop.

"It seems that you're allowed to wear a full face covering into Parliament if you're a Muslim woman but no other group is allowed to have that same privilege," Sergio Redegalli said, wearing the KKK outfit.

A UNITED States sailor accused of raping a woman in Darwin allegedly admitted the crime and told the victim he attempted suicide in a private message on social media, prosecutors have said. 
 
Hugh Patrick Malone, 23, has denied an allegation that he "digitally" raped a woman — within hours of having sex with her friend — during a dodgy night out on Darwin's party strip in September, 2013.

His lawyer Tom Berkley told a the NT Supreme Court jury victim's claim was a "case of regret, not rape".

He urged the jury to "pay close attention to the relationship the girls and sailors had built up".

Crown prosecutor Matthew Nathan said the accused messaged the woman on facebook after the crime.

He apologised and said what he did was wrong.

She replied: "You forced yourself on me."

Malone allegedly wrote to the woman: "I tried to rape you, I tried to kill myself."

The court is closed to the public while the victim gives evidence.

The jury heard she and two friends hit the clubs every night Malone's ship USS Denver was in town to "meet sailors".

The victim reportedly hooked up with another sailor who will give evidence at the trial via video link.

Malone and his "liberty buddy" had met the victim and her friends several times at city bars and organised to catch up at Monsoons nightclub, on Mitchell St, on September 4.

Malone hired a room at Melaleuca Lodge where he had sex with one of the women.

The pair returned to the club before Malone hit on the victim, Mr Nathan said.

She said no.

Malone allegedly invited the woman to come and "check out of the room" with him as he had to get back to the ship.

"Her intention was to move on to spend the night with (her partner) who was staying at the Value Inn," Mr Nathan said.

He said the woman was confused when she saw Malone's room was empty.

He allegedly pulled her inside and shut the door, kissing her "roughly" despite her protests.

Mr Nathan said Malone held down the woman on the bed and sexually assaulted her.

The jury heard he stopped and apologised when she began to cry.
