RESIDENTS in the remote community of Gapuwiyak are spending as much as $18,000 a day on drugs and gambling, and the town has lost a "whole generation" to mental illness, according to a traditional owner.

In a statement read in court, traditional owner Mickey Wunungmurra said on some days, $18,000 in cash was withdrawn from the town's only ATM, most of which he claimed was spent on a combination of drugs, petrol sniffing and gambling. Mr Wunungmurra's account was largely corroborated by other residents and police.

The town, 220km by road from Nhulunbuy, has a population of around 1200.

"We have a whole generation of children with mental health problems and depression," Mr Wunungmurra said.

"Having lived my whole life in this community I have seen things made progressively worse since the introduction of cannabis."

He said many parents in town would stay up late into the night, gambling, smoking and sniffing petrol.

By morning, school-aged children would be found asleep in bed instead of at school, Mr Wunungmurra said.

"School attendance used to be really good," he said, adding that at some points last year, attendance rates dropped as low as 20 per cent.

Official figures show Gapuwiyak School had attendance figures of 29.0 per cent in term four last year, down from 54.2 per cent for the 2013 school year, the earliest time comparable figures were available.

Mr Wunungmurra said he and other elders feared for the loss of local culture as young people's drug habits become entrenched

Mr Wunungmurra's comments on the effect of drugs in Gapuwiyak came during the sentencing of an out-of-town drug dealer, Richard Witham, who pocketed $24,000 from the sale of drugs in four days.

The courts regularly hear cases of drug runners travelling to remote communities, who, like Witham, take advantage of the high price of cannabis. At $100 per gram, dealers profit from as much as a 1000 per cent mark-up on wholesale prices in Darwin.

RISING girl group Oxygen thieves Fifth Harmony have criticised the American music community for not speaking out in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Far from home on a world tour to promote their second album 7/27, the group's Normani Kordei said she feared for the lives of her father and male relatives.

The 20-year-old singer was both praised and trolled for her passionate Twitter post in the wake of the recent police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.

"For me it's hard, especially being a young African-American woman. My dad doesn't look like what you might call the 'safe' African-American male that America would accept, if you know what I mean," she said in Sydney on Tuesday.

"It definitely scares me. What if I don't get to see my father again because he is shot down. Or my uncles. It's really crazy.

"It's hard for me to believe that the KKK still exists, especially knowing all my ancestors have been through. I feel like the history and meaning of all we have been through has been trashed.

"I think it's all about people loving each other and having compassion, accepting one another and educating themselves.

"I've seen a lot of hate. I got a lot of flak about posting that because I hashtagged Black Lives Matter. That doesn't mean all other lives don't matter."

The group want to be part of a new campaign to encourage young people to vote in the US Presidential elections in November.

And they would welcome a We Are The World-style song featuring some of the biggest names in pop music today to promote social change and address racism.

Beyonce, Jay-Z, Drake, Janelle Monae, Vic Mensa and Run The Jewels are among the high-profile musicians to speak out on the social justice issue and killings as well as in support of Dallas law enforcement after five police who were killed by sniper Micah Johnson.

Lauren Jauregui said she believed many artists wouldn't speak out because "they are worried about losing followers; it's so sad."

"Music is people's escape, a distraction from the other things happening in their lives and I think that's why musicians sometimes walk that line between being politically correct and having to take a stand," she said.

"We are the influencers of a generation, people do look up to us, kids do listen to what we have to say, they listen to our music and they feel. Art speaks about the times and it reflects the times.

"And I think it's time right now that artists need to come together and inspire people to change."

I say let them try, then perhaps if they get the green light for working for the black community, It would seem unfair for White Pride artists not to have music done for White people involving politics about how much White Lives Matter.

LAST week, two young girls had their citizenship applications rejected by the Swiss government.

The girls, aged 12 and 14, were denied a Swiss passport because they refused to participate in school swimming lessons and camps, saying the proximity to men in these contexts was forbidden by their religion.

Swimming lessons are compulsory in the Swiss city of Basel, where the incident took place.

Stefan Wehrle, president of the naturalisation committee, said that young people who wish to become citizens need to prove they're meeting the requirements of the country's education system.

"Whoever doesn't fulfil these conditions violates the law and therefore cannot be naturalised," he told the Swiss TV station SRF.

It's the first in a string of cases where individuals and families have seen their citizenship requests denied on the basis of not properly integrating into the country's society and culture.

WHAT IS 'NATURALISATION'?

To become an Australian citizen, you basically need to be a permanent resident, have a clean record, pass a general knowledge test and intend on staying in Australia.

In Switzerland, however, the rules are more stringent. Foreigners with no direct blood ties to Switzerland must live in the country for at least 12 years before they can apply for citizenship (although years spent in the country between ages 10 and 20 count for double).

Unlike in Australia or the United States, general knowledge of the country is considered less important than provenly integrating into society.



Authorities can and will do regular check-ups to determine whether or not a migrant is making genuine attempts to assimilate into their local neighbourhood, and adopting the national customs and traditions.

According to the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung, one of the country's largest newspapers, it is very rare for a naturalisation application to be denied.

But a string of recent cases suggest otherwise.

In an incident last month, a Bosnian Muslim father was fined for refusing to allow his daughters to take swimming lessons at school.

He also forbade them from going to camps and other school events, claiming such activities ran counter to his religious beliefs, the AFP reported.

He was ordered to pay 4000 Swiss francs (almost $A5500), and the prosecutor additionally requested he serve four months in jail, saying he had been living in Switzerland since 1990 and had made no attempts to integrate.

The Swiss government is not shy about threatening fines over a lack of integration. A case of this a few months ago sparked national outrage after two Muslim schoolboys refused to shake their female teacher's hand, saying any physical contact with a non-related female was prohibited by Islam.

Shaking hands in Switzerland is a common display of cultural etiquette, taught from a very young age as a sign of respect.


The incident largely sparked fury after the school agreed that the boys would no longer have to shake their female teachers' hands, with the country's Justice Minister insisting "shaking hands is part of our culture".

The decision was later overturned, and replaced by a rule that stated a parent or guardian could be fined up to 5000 francs ($A6805) if their child refused to shake hands.

In 2015, a 76-year-old American immigrant abandoned his quest to become a Swiss citizen after living there for 43 years.

Local officials refused his naturalisation application, claiming the man — who lived there with his three children and German wife — had not sufficiently integrated.

They justified this by claiming, based on tests they conducted, that he wasn't familiar with the local area and didn't have any local friends.

In a comparatively stricter ruling, a family from Kosovo was denied citizenship because they wore tracksuit pants around town.

Initially, the family's application process seemed solid: they knew the customs and geography of their region, and they could all speak German (there is a rule that citizens must speak one of the three national languages fluently — German, French or Italian).

But some panel members said the fact that they didn't wear jeans was a hindrance, as was the fact that they didn't greet people they passed in the street.

Gee! do they sure have ways to keep the riff raff out! How are you supposed to police if they wear jeans or not? How many friends are Swiss?

TEENAGER has spoken out over her sexual assault after at least 35 teenage girls were attacked by a mob of 'foreign youths' at a Swedish music festival.

According to The Sun, Alexandra Larsson, 17, was at the 'Party in the Park' music festival in Karlstad, about 400km from Stockholm over the weekend, when she became just one of the targets in the horrific assaults.

Girls between 12 and 17 were allegedly targeted during the festival with more than 35 complaints made to police.

The incident comes just a few months after at least 26 women reported being sexually harassed or assaulted at the Schlossgrabenfest music festival in Germany.

Police said three Pakistani men aged 28 to 31, at least two of them asylum seekers, were arrested at that four-day open air event.

Waiving her right to anonymity, Ms Larsson said someone needed to speak out to draw attention to the issue.

The young woman said she was at the festival, listening to John de Sohn, when she was groped on Friday night.

She told MailOnline: "Someone took the liberty of grabbing my butt really hard. I turned away and said to the group of boys behind us that this was not okay, but I did not know who had done it. After a while, I felt someone running his fingers between my legs touching my genitalia.



"I turned around and screamed right out that 'whoever it was — you're a pig!' I told my friends what had just happened and they were all shocked. Me and my girlfriends decided to leave the concert."

She said she felt lucky that she was wearing jeans at the time of the attack.

Authorities now fear the 35 reports of sexual assaults are just the tip of the iceberg.

Ms Larsson said she believed the young men involved in the attack were foreigners, adding that they "were probably immigrants".

Local police extra staff would be organised for the remainder of the festival.

Two males aged between 15 and 17 have since been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

One tactic understood to be used during the festival includes several males surrounding a woman and assaulting her, leaving her with no escape, before dispersing into the crowd.

Ms Larsson said there was also verbal abuse thrown around during the festival, including threats to kill.

The young woman said: "It was creepy. Someone stood around me and groped me and I had no idea who it was. It was sick."

She said she felt powerless, particularly as she saw other young women leave the crowd crying after similar circumstances.

The incident has since been reported to police.

Ms Larsson said she was worried for younger victims of sexual assault as they may not be able to cope with the incident.

She said she would never visit the festival again.

Up to 24 reports of alleged assaults took place during the festival, known as Putte I Parken festival in Swedish, with another 11 reported afterwards, according to Breitbart.

AUSTRALIAN Federal Police are investigating an allegation of payment for preferences ahead of Saturday's federal election in the seat of Solomon.

Australia First candidate John Kearney lodged the complaint on June 15 after meeting One Territory Solomon candidate Mark Garner. Mr Garner is technically an independent as One Territory did not register as a political party in time for the federal election.

Mr Kearney alleges Mr Garner offered to pay $2000 for his corflutes and his $1000 nomination fee for him to preference One Territory and not campaign in the seat.

Mr Garner confirmed he had met and spoken to Mr Kearney but "completely denied" making any offers. Mr Garner also confirmed he was aware of an AFP investigation, but not the specifics of the allegations.

The AFP confirmed it has received a referral from a candidate in the seat of Solomon, NT, in relation to an alleged breach of the Electoral Act and the matter is under investigation.

"As this matter is currently being investigated, it is not appropriate to provide further comment at this time." a statement said.

The NT News understands Mr Kearney has told the AFP the initial contact from Mr Garner came on June 10 via an unsolicited mobile phone call suggesting a meeting in the future to discuss campaigns and preferences.

During this initial conversation Mr Kearney claims Mr Garner said he might be able to "pay for my nomination fee and also the cost of my core flute flyers."



The next day the pair met at a cafe in Yarrawonga. Mr Kearney claims Mr Garner asked to "withdraw from the campaign", offering to cover the $2000 corflute cost and the $1000 nomination fee. Mr Kearney claims he was also offered a spot as the One Territory candidate in the NT seat of Goyder.

He rejected all offers and made contact with Australia First party president Jim Saleam. Mr Kearney lodged a complaint with the AFP on June 15 on advice from the Australian Electoral Commission.

Mr Garner said he would not comment on the allegations due to an "AFP investigation". He initially would not confirm discussions with Mr Kearney, but later admitted he had spoken and met him as is "standard practice."

Mr Garner, who has preferenced Solomon candidate Natasha Griggs last in Solomon, did not rule out running in the state seat of Port Darwin, saying: "I'm only registered to run in the seat of Solomon."

Ten people were injured Sunday after violence broke out between a white supremacist group and counter-protesters, said authorities in Sacramento, California.

Two of the injured had critical stab wounds, Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Chris Harvey said.

The nine men and one woman were between 19 and 58, the fire department said in a tweet, and all had multiple stab and laceration wounds. One of the injured refused to go to the hospital, Harvey said. It was not clear how many remained hospitalized Sunday night.

The Traditionalist Worker Party, or TWP, whose leader describes it as a "white nationalist" group, had a permit for a noon rally near the state Capitol, said Officer George Granada, California Highway Patrol public information officer with the Capitol Protection Division. Another group showed up "to stop them from carrying on their permit," he said.

"They (counter-protesters) showed up ahead of time in a large group, probably 300 or more," Granada said. "They were positioned around the Capitol to stop them (TWP demonstrators) from carrying on their permit."



Around 11:45 a.m. PT, TWP members and supporters came out to a location south of the Capitol building, he said. It's unclear how many TWP members participated, but they were clearly outnumbered.
At that point the word spread pretty quick and a mob ran in that direction and they clashed immediately with each other," he said.

Video showed people running and being pursued by others with sticks. Some of the people hid their faces with scarves and masks.

The victims had stab wounds that required critical medical care, said Sacramento Police Department Officer Matt McPhail. Their conditions were not immediately known but it's believed the injuries were not life-threatening. Other people had scrapes and bruises that didn't require hospitalization.

It was unclear which groups the injured were associated with, McPhail said.

Yvette Felarca, who said she was a member of the group By Any Means Necessary, told CNN she came out to let people know that racist and anti-immigrant viewpoints would not be tolerated.

Matthew Heimbach, leader of the Traditionalist Worker Party, was not at the rally but told CNN that TWP members armed themselves with knives, with blades within the California legal limit. He said they'd been threatened on social media forums. An affiliate group, the Golden State Skinheads, joined them for the rally, he said.

The TWP was charged by a group that describes itself as anti-fascist, he said.

"The anti-fascists used knives, bottles, bricks, and chunks of concrete they broke off a construction site. When they attacked, our men defended themselves to be able to drive the attackers off," he said.

Heimbach said two "comrades" were hurt -- one stabbed and the other hit in the face with a bottle.

The TWP called off its rally and a group of counter-protesters remained on the scene for about an hour, McPhail said.

So far, nobody has been arrested, authorities said.

McPhail said a loaded firearm was found on the ground where the brawl occurred, but police did not yet know who it belonged to, why it had been brought to the scene or whether perhaps it was a lost or stolen weapon. The type of firearm found was not disclosed.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, the party was founded in January 2015 as part of a right-wing extremist "umbrella group that aims to indoctrinate high school and college students into white nationalism."

The clashes Sunday at the state Capitol apparently were not unexpected by the TWP organizers of the rally. A website promoting the gathering in advance said:

"The upcoming rally this weekend on the 26th promises to be one to remember, due to the fact many stand to stop us yet we refuse to yield!"

Under the party's banner, "many Nationalists will unite and take a stand ... Although, our enemies have already openly planned to gather and use violence against us, as always we will stand our ground."

Rallies protesting against the Brexit vote have been held in London and Edinburgh by anti-racism campaigners and left-wing demonstrators.

Carrying "refugees welcome here" and "no to racism" placards, the protesters gathered in a park in Whitechapel, east London.

Some of the demonstrators wore masks and others carried flares. Organisers said the protests were being held "against racism, for migrant rights, against fascist violence." Immigration was one of the big issues in the referendum, with supporters of the leave campaign seeing Brexit as a way of imposing tighter controls".

BRITISH Labour politician Jo Cox has died in hospital after being shot and stabbed by a man reportedly shouting 'Britain First' just a week out from the Brexit vote.

Ms Cox, 41, succumbed to her injuries about an hour after the attack, and was pronounced dead at 1:48pm local time (11pm AEST).
"Three times she was shot, the initial time which then she dropped to the floor and two more times," the man said. "The third time he got proximity he shot her round the head area."

"In the meantime he was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife," he said.

"He was stabbing her with a foot-long knife multiple times while shouting Britain First, Britain First, Britain First."

Britain First is the name of a right-wing group that describes itself on its website as "a patriotic political party and street defence organisation".

Police say they have a 52-year-old man in custody, who The Sun names as local Tommy Mair, as well as an old fashioned gun and a long knife.

LABOR'S Nova Peris said this week she'd quit the Senate. It's time the rest of us quit, too — quit the race politics Peris represents.

Peris is a former Olympic athlete picked by Prime Minister Julia Gillard to be Labor's Senator for the Northern Territory.

She wasn't even a Labor member, but Gillard made her a Senator for one reason above all: she was Aboriginal.

As Gillard explained: "There has never been an indigenous Australian who has served as a federal Labor representative. I am determined that at the 2013 election we change that.

"And that's why I am very proud to ... announce that I have invited Nova to join the Australian Labor Party and I have invited her to seek preselection for the Senate in the Northern Territory."

In this case the loser was Trish Crossin, a White woman who actually had the Senate job Gillard decided to give to Peris and who was sacked to make way for Gillard's "captain's pick".

That makes Crossin unique. She is the first politician in Australia's history to be officially sacked for being White. If that's not racism, what is?

Peris did not make much of an impression in the Senate and now, not three years later, she's quitting, reportedly to go to another job — head of diversity for the AFL.

If there is a race industry, Peris seems a beneficiary.

Don't accept the excuse that such patronising racism does only good.

In this case, it left Labor with an underperforming Senator who has now quit in the middle of an election campaign, leaving Labor in the lurch.

Worse, picked as a symbol of Aboriginality, she risks confirming a crippling and foul Aboriginal stereotype of unreliability — of going walkabout.

Crossin — the Senator sacked for being white — says Peris's resignation proves Gillard made a mistake.

"This is what happens when you override a democracy," she says, but she's wrong.

This is what happens when you judge people by the colour of their skin and not the content of their character — not by their talent and their commitment.

Say no to this new racism.

What are they playing at, these smug, middle-class families deserting their local state school just because it's next to commission housing? (White flight: race segregation in Melbourne state schools) How dare those "Greens-voting, socially liberal" white families drain these "sink schools" of their affluence and high-achieving Charlottes, Matildas, Ollies and Finns?

I know. You know. And Abeselom Nega, (NIGGER) community leader and board member of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, knows. It's racism.

The white parents don't send their kids to these schools because all they see is black kids. They may not view it as racism, but it is .. you can sugar coat it, and put it differently, but I won't," Nega told Fairfax Media.

Back in the day, my well-meaning, socially conscious parents refused to send my sister and I to a "prestige" state school. We joke that our parents looked for the most disadvantaged school with the lowest literacy rate as a matter of left-wing principle.

Ours was a school in which the majority of students came from non-English-speaking backgrounds, and the literacy level was so low that instead of asking us to read the assigned VCE English text, our teacher walked into class one day with a video and said, "I'd ask you to read the book, but let's face it, none of you will, so here's the movie version instead."

It was a school in which, if you read for fun, you hid it lest you got your head kicked in. (A shame, since our school's version of an "accelerated learning program" was the teacher pretending not to notice when you stopped listening and quietly read a book under your desk.)

As an adult, probably to alleviate my white, middle-class guilt (certainly not because I valued education), I volunteered to help with reading in a grade 5 class at the local primary school – one of the "ghetto housing commission schools" mentioned in The Age's story. As the highly competent teacher struggled to teach the kids who could barely read the alphabet while simultaneously challenging the kids who had an average grade 5 reading age, it was clear she had an impossible task.

It doesn't matter how skilled you are as a teacher – if you have a class with vastly different levels of literacy, it is impossible to adequately meet everyone's needs – let alone educate them. One group will suffer.

So how do you choose which group will suffer?

It was a choice I had to make – which students to sacrifice? – while teaching a master's-level writing subject at university. An hour into the first class, it was apparent that owing to the university's hunger to tap the international full-fee-paying student market, 80 per cent of the students in a master's-level journalism class could barely read or write English. I left the class close to tears, with no idea how I could possibly teach to their level, while still engaging the local students. In the end I defaulted to pragmatism, and taught to the level of the majority, which meant slowing the class down to the point where I had to have private, unpaid, sessions with local students just so they wouldn't miss out.

Like Roald Dahl's Matilda, smart kids will always find a way to continue learning. Whether they're from the local state school in downtown Crapsville, or are recently arrived in Australia with not a book in the house, experience teaches them that many schools operate as a glorified baby-sitting service, and if they want an education, they'd best get it themselves.

The idea that it's the so-called "high achieving" kids' social responsibility to sacrifice their own education to somehow drag up the level of their peers (by osmosis?) is obnoxious and entitled. How do I know? After being bored witless for most of my school years, I decided to leave. The principal called me into his office and told me I couldn't go because "we can't afford to lose students like you in the senior levels because you bring our scores up".

Is it so hard to imagine that a parent might not want their kid to be the one to suffer? Or, as the patron saint of the socially conscious (and Probably Not Racist) filmmaker Michael Moore said, when criticised for not sending his child to the local state school, "our daughter is not the one to be sacrificed to make things better".

Though frankly, I'd avoid sending my child to the local prestige state school, because it has the lowest vaccine rate in the state. Call me specist against measles.

Wayne Haworth, the new principal of "disadvantaged" school Mount Alexander College, is apparently looking at ways to "modernise the curriculum, so that it caters for students excelling in certain areas and supports those whose learning has been interrupted by migration".

This is admirable, and we need to analyse and emulate the schools that do so successfully. Lazy catch-phrases such as white flight may capture attention and tap into class anxieties, but they don't help (any) children get a better education.

Could he be genuinely oblivious to the fact that many asylum seekers are highly educated and qualified people fleeing their country for political reasons? That there is a long history of refugees contributing to Australia?

Hell, down here in South Australia our Governor is a former refugee. But I guess if some Anglo Saxon wanted that gig, the Honourable Hieu Van Le nicked it from him.

Either way, it's appalling conduct for a Minister.

Mega-brain author, George Megalogenis, in his latest book Second Chance, writes that more people bring more prosperity.

He has mapped out Australia's history and found that as we increase our migrant intake and diversity, we get richer (and not just in the fabric of our society, in actual cold, hard cash).

Then, the cycle goes, we get mean and insular. We want to protect all that we have built up from those grabby foreigners. The waves of immigrants that give those who are already settled the heebie jeebies. Because their fears blind them to the very real contributions immigrants and refugees make.

So we clamp down on people coming in. And, Megalogenis argues, that kicks off the downturn in our economy.

It's sweet, yes? Generosity brings material rewards. Not to mention how good it feels to not be an utter arsehat.

Dutton's right on one thing; it's important not to sugarcoat the situation. Plenty of refugees have suffered civil war, rape, torture. They may not be able to slot swiftly into the Federal Government's new internship program.

Club manager John Baker said Austen Tayshus — most famous for his spoken word pun-filled piece Australiana — bombed on stage last week.

But Austen Tayshus rejected suggestions of racism in the show which he said relied heavily on irony.

These words were crossed out late on Saturday night and "Such a Shame'' was written in their place.

Street artist Peter Drew, the man behind the "Real Australians Say Welcome'' posters, travelled through the Territory on the Ghan last week with his new project – What is a Real Aussie?

"It's about asking people to really think what it really means to be Aussie and where we inherit our identity from," Mr Drew said.

"Does Aussie have more to do with the mistakes of the past or more to do with the people who survived the mistakes of the past?"

Mr Drew found a 100-year-old photograph of Indian-born Pashtun cameleer Monga Kahn in the Australian national archives, along with thousands of others who applied for exemptions to the White Australia policy.

One thousand posters featuring seven people from varying nationalities, including an Aboriginal man, will be pasted up across the country.

"A large part of this project is a celebration of the history of Australian diversity, but a part of it is also provocation (against) people (who) are uncomfortable with the idea of multiculturalism, and I think it's important to challenge those people."

But the posters haven't all been received without controversy, with some already ripped down in Darwin.

"The type of art RUBBISH that I make ... puts our freedom of expression above our value of private property – in a pretty gentle way, hopefully," Mr Drew said. THEY'RE the far right wing parties hoping for a Trump-style revolution in Australia at the federal election.

From a party calling for an end to the "Islamisation of Australia" to another whose leader has a criminal past — how much do Australians know about these parties?

After being deposed as prime minister last year, Tony Abbott warned that a splinter right-wing movement could damage the Coalition.

"The last thing we need is another conservative party, particularly a rogue conservative party that is raging against the world. That's the last thing we need," Mr Abbott told Fairfax last year.

He also said the emergence of One Nation almost led to defeat for John Howard in 1998.

Will the rise of Donald Trump in the US, some Coalition voters disenfranchised with Malcolm Turnbull and the rising threat of terrorism lead to a groundswell of support for these extreme parties?

What realistic chances do they have on July 2 or are they just standing for election to make some noise? News.com.au went to find out.

THE RACIST LABEL DOESN'T BOTHER ME'

Jim Saleam is a survivor of far right politics in Australia. He has stood in elections since the 1980s, helped start the nationalist party National Action in 1982 and has spent time in jail.

He now runs the Australia First Party out of his home on a busy highway in Tempe, south of Sydney.

The party will have candidates contesting the Federal Election, including Dr Saleam standing in the western Sydney seat of Lindsay.

It is an important area for the anti-immigration party, with debate over a mosque at Kemps Creek helping Australia First gain some traction.

(The party had a councillor elected to Penrith Council in 2012 before he resigned from the party to continue on council as an independent councillor).

Most recently, Dr Saleam stood against Treasurer Scott Morrison at the 2013 election and only gained 617 votes.

But the party isn't really interested in getting elected. It's just keen to get its controversial message out there.

"We see the electoral process as a chance to put some of our views out there but also an opportunity to mobilise people around movements and issues," Dr Saleam tells news.com.au.

The party's "eight core policies" include an end to multiculturalism and limiting immigration to white Europeans.

They want to see the White Australia policy reinstated.

"I had the great privilege of being born into that sort of Australia. And I made a personal decision many years ago that my children would die in that sort of Australia," Dr Saleam said.

He mocked other far right parties such as the Australian Liberty Alliance that are opposed to Islamic immigration.

"Diversity minus Islam is still diversity.

"As Pauline Hanson always says there's a right way and a wrong way (to enter Australia). We say, 'No right way, no wrong way, no way'."

He believes Australians are being "ethnically cleansed".

But Dr Saleam's past and the party's extreme views mean it will never attract a big following.

(The party was deregistered last year because of a lack of members, only to be reinstated this year when it reached the minimum number of members of 500).

In the 1990s, he was jailed for three and a half years for supplying a gun to two men who shot up the home of an African National Congress representative.

(After getting out of jail, Dr Saleam spent five years at Sydney University where he did a PhD on right wing politics in Australia).

He still maintains he was set up by the police and his case was one of "four great political trials in Australia".

As for being labelled a racist, he doesn't seem to mind.

"I really don't care. It's something that's inevitably said because obviously I exercise a racial preference," he said.

"The label of racist doesn't really disturb me that much, it's more (important) that people read what we actually do say." [more ...]

BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "battling for Britain" at a Brussels summit — and for a less intrusive EU that would also benefit other countries.


But French President Francois Hollande warned that no individual leader should be allowed to stop closer European co-operation.

"It's the EU in question, not just one country in the EU," Hollande said.

"I want Britain to stay in the EU. But I hope most of all that Europe can advance, can be stronger."

Cameron is seeking changes to the UK-EU relationship that will let him urge Britons to vote "yes" to continued membership in a referendum that could come as early as June.

Cameron told his fellow leaders that he needed a substantial deal that would be "credible for the British people".
The British referendum on EU membership is bound to be hard-fought, since few issues in Britain have as much resonance as its relationship with the EU.

"The question of Britain's place in Europe has been allowed to fester for too long," Cameron said, arguing that this was a chance to settle the issue for a generation.

Britain, which has one of the strongest economies in Europe, has been a magnet for hundreds of thousands of workers from EU nations in Eastern Europe seeking higher-paying jobs.





Britain has no power to stop immigration from other EU nations, leading some in Britain to say that immigrants are taking their jobs.

The EU immigrants can also claim unemployment, child care and other benefits in Britain, which the government claims is straining the country's social services budget.

Since none of the 27 other leaders has a desire to see Britain leave, there is broad consensus, if not agreement, on a deal which Cameron says he needs to win the referendum.

It would give Britain more powers to limit benefit payments to workers from other EU countries for several years — something Britain says will slow the pace of immigration.


The deal also offers guarantees to countries, including Britain, that do not use the shared euro currency, and makes tweaks aimed at boosting competitiveness and giving national parliaments more power.

But differences remain on key details, including Britain's wish to be exempted from the EU's longstanding aim of "ever closer union".

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) wants state residents to start shooting drug dealers on sight in order to help alleviate Maine's heroin crisis.

"Everybody in Maine, we have constitutional carry," LePage said Wednesday.
"Load up and get rid of the drug dealers."

Since October, Maine has allowed legal firearm owners to carry concealed handguns without a permit.

LePage frequently talks about the state's heroin epidemic, often focusing on penalties for drug traffickers. On Tuesday, he said he wants drug dealers to face the death penalty, even suggesting that they be subjected to the guillotine.
At the very least, he wants them to face 20 years to life in prison.

He recently made national news when he commented on traffickers from Connecticut and New York with names like "D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty" who "come up here, they sell their heroin and they go back home."

"Incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave, which is a real sad thing because then we have another issue that we've got to deal with down the road," LePage added.

After intense criticism, LePage said he never meant his comments to be about race.

"I tried to explain that Maine is essentially all white," he said. "I should have said 'Maine women.'"

On Jan. 14, the state House did try to start an investigation that could lead to LePage's impeachment, but lawmakers failed to get enough votes to move forward.

Rival political members exchanged a few heated words outside a Newtown bookstore on Thursday evening.

Seconds later, men were trying to slash and bash each other with a broken fluorescent light tube, 1.2 metre metal pole, and golf club.

Police will allege members of the nationalist group United Patriots Front got into a brawl with members of the far left organisation Antifa​ on Enmore Road just after 8pm.

The confrontation was sparked when Daniel Evans and friend Ralph Cerminara allegedly took photos and a video outside the Black Rose Anarchist Library, according to court documents.

Police allege the men were recognised, prompting three other men to enter the bookstore and retrieve a stash of weapons.

"They ran inside and came back with baseballs bats, golf clubs, and a fluro tube and they smashed the fluro tube, they came at us," said Mr Cerminara on a video he posted on the Facebook group page called Left Wing Bigots and Extremists exposed.

Mr Evans and Mr Cerminara ran to the nearby Caltex service station.

It was at this point police allege Montgomery Strange, 23, slashed Mr Cerminara's left hand with a broken, fluorescent tube.

Another man Christian Enright, 21, stood by threatening to use a 1.2 metre pole.

"I've been stabbed in the hand, they attacked us with their bats ...," Mr Cerminara said on video.

A man who has yet to be arrested swung a golf club five times at Mr Evans, eventually striking him on the shoulder.

Mr Evans allegedly retaliated by smashing a glass bottle over his head.

Police say Mr Evans suffered a cut which required six stitches at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Officers were called and arrested four men but are still looking for the fifth man who was armed with a golf club.

Mr Strange was charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and being armed with intent to commit actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail before Newtown Local Court on Friday.

His co-accused, Mr Enright was charged with affray and being armed with intent to assault.

He was granted bail before the same court.

Despite their injuries, police also charged Mr Cerminara and Mr Evans with affray and they are expected to appear before court in February.

The fact that the Islamic State is making mountains of cash selling oil indicates that they are selling the oil to some entity. It would seem like an easy calculation to determine exactly what person, group or state is buying this oil.

According to Frederic Slater, who was the President of the Australian Archaeological and Education Research Society, an Original stone arrangement he and a colleague were investigating throughout 1939 is "the Stonehenge of Australia." Assumed to be lost for the last 63 years, this impressive and complex sandstone arrangement is much more than a collection of rocks, signs and symbols positioned on a mound. According to Slater, "the mound is one of the oldest; I should say the oldest, forms of temples in the world, and dates back to the... advent of first man."

Not only was the mound the first temple, the narrative and wisdom it chronicles is as profound as it is sublime, so much so that Slater claimed it formed "the basis of all knowledge, all science, all history and all forms of writing."

These are extremely bold claims to make; to suggest that the very first language was spoken and recorded in stone in Australia carries with it many inconvenient historical implications. Modern humanity is assumed to have had its genesis in Africa. We are told a few restless inquisitive souls set foot outside African soil some 60,000 years ago and spread their culture and genes. In this theoretical construct, there is no room for Australia to be anything other than an afterthought and merely an African colony peopled by mariners who surely spoke before setting sail to Australia.

Bulldozing Australia's History

Despite the unpopular stance advocated by Slater, his research was meticulous and the methodology sound. More to the point, such was the strength of the case he made on behalf of this arrangement being the First Language, in 1940 representatives of the Australian Government approached the farmer and threatened to confiscate his land because of these rocks. The landholder under threat was openly sympathetic to the archaeology being done, but realised while the stones stood he would lose his land, income and livelihood. Amongst the accumulation of papers and documents were Slater's letters to his on-field colleague. Soon after, Richard contacted our research team, and so the unraveling has began.

A Victorian school that invited Muslim children to walk out of assembly before the national anthem was played has been criticised by parents and maverick Senator Jacqui Lambie.

Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School said Shia Muslim students were allowed to skip the anthem because during the month of Muharram taking part in joyous events such as singing and listening to music is frowned upon as it is a time of mourning, the Herald Sun reports.

Lorraine McCurdy, who has two grandchildren at Cranbourne, told radio station 3AW she "saw red" when children were invited to leave before singing 'Advance Australia Fair'.

"Two children got up and said 'welcome to our assembly' with that a teacher came forward and said all those who feel it's against their culture may leave the room," Ms McCurdy said.

"With that about 30 or 40 children got up and left the room.

"We sang the national anthem and they all came back in.

"I saw red, I'm Australian and I felt 'you don't walk out on my national anthem, that's showing respect to my country."

Independent Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie said she found the whole situation "disgusting".

"I find that absolutely devastating, we should all be singing the Australian national anthem and we should be doing that with pride," the senator said.

TAKE a wrong turn leaving bustling, multicultural Manhattan and you'll find yourself on the doorstep of an all-white enclave established by Nazi sympathisers where one can't buy property unless they're German.


The rural hamlet of Yaphank, Long Island, is home to 6000 people and lies a little more than 100km from New York City.

Its snaking road network once read like a list of the worst of the worst from the Third Reich — streets were named after Hitler and Goering and Goebbels.

Through the main streets of town American Nazi sympathisers once marched, the stars and stripes waving in the breeze alongside the swastika.

The thriving community was at its most extreme in the middle of the 20th century during the peak of WWII. Fast forward 70 years and the propaganda has largely been lost. The sentiment though remains the same.

According to a lawsuit by one of the community's property owners, an ancient bylaw still requires homeowners to be primarily of German descent.

Yaphank was once home to one of a number of Nazi summer camps across the US. Camp Siegfried drew Nazi sympathisers and taught Nazi ideology. It was owned by an organisation known as the German American Bund, which would later become the German American Settlement League.

The organisation made it plainly clear whose side they were on. On buildings they engraved the swastika and in broad daylight they espoused the teachings of an anti-Semitic dictator half a world away.

In 1937, the community purchased 50 lots and established a bylaw that current residents say violates federal housing laws.

The group's president, Robert Kessler, told The New York Times this week the lawsuit against his community is based on a "misunderstanding".

"People in other parts of town look at us and think this is closed to non-Germans," he said. "That's just not true."

Mr Kneer and Mrs Flynn-Kneer have lived happily in Yaphank since 1999. They were allowed to move in after the league met with Mrs Flynn-Kneer's German mother. The interview, according to the Times, was conducted partly in German.

"They were very impressed that she was from Berlin," she said.

It was only in 2006 when they tried to sell their home that they realised something was very, very wrong.


The pair say they were barred from advertising the home and instead required to use the leagues' internal bulletin. The bulletin would be distributed to only families of German descent. The house did not sell for almost 10 years.

A 20-year-old teaching assistant died at the scene and a 17-year-old boy died later in hospital from stab wounds. Two more students are in a critical condition, while the attacker — who reportedly watched Nazi videos before that attack — was fatally shot by police.

Laith, a 14-year-old student at the school, told Sweden's state broadcaster SVT neither pupils nor staff initially realised what was happening.

"When we first saw him we thought it was a joke. He had a mask and black clothes and a long sword," he said. "There were pupils who wanted to take pictures with him and feel the sword."

Hospital staff had previously confirmed that two boys, aged 11 and 15, were in critical condition with stab wounds, while another teacher who was seriously wounded in the attack also underwent surgery.

Another student, Sara, who took a photograph with the attacker, told SVT she had no idea that the blood on the large knife he was holding was real.

"You are scaring the children, get away from here," she reports her teacher telling the killer.

"He just nodded, then he plunged the knife into the teacher's right side," she said. "The last thing I heard him say was 'call an ambulance'".

"After that he hunted us through the school. He was playing strange music and didn't say a word. It was terrifying music, sort of Halloween music."

Swedish news agency TT and daily Expressen reported that the killer had a YouTube account where he posted material glorifying Hitler and Nazi Germany and critical of Islam and immigration to Sweden.

The anti-racism magazine Expo meanwhile said its police sources said they were investigating a "political motive".

Police were alerted to the attack at 10.10am local time, arriving at the scene five minutes later.

"When we first saw him, we thought it was a joke. He was wearing a mask and black clothes and (carrying) a long sword. Some students wanted to take their picture with him and feel the sword," one student identified only as Laith told Swedish television SVT. When the man started attacking people, he quickly realised it wasn't a joke and fled as the assailant went from classroom to classroom looking for victims.

Far-right Dutch politician, Geert Wilders, will be allowed to speak in Australia for the second time in his controversial career, after being granted a visa.


Wilders is due to visit Australia this month for the launch of an anti-Islamic political party, the Australian Liberty Alliance, that was modelled on his own outfit, Party for Freedom.

The ALA's president, Debbie Robinson, told Guardian Australia on Thursday afternoon that the Department of Immigration and Border Protection had been dragging its feet in giving Wilders clearance.

But later that night, the anti-Islamic party issued a statement saying Wilders' visa had been issued.

"Everyone rallied together to remind the LNP government that Australia is still a democratic country based on Western values," the statement said.

Robinson told the ABC on Monday that the party had been given assurances in August that Wilders's visa application would go through.

She told Guardian Australia on Thursday that the Department of Immigration and Border Protection had set a deadline of last Friday to make a decision on the visa, but that the date had passed with no word from either the department or the minister's office. "I believe that they're stonewalling the visa, deliberately going slow," Robinson said before the announcement.

Calls to the office of the immigration minister, Peter Dutton, were not returned.


The Liberal backbencher, Cory Bernardi, a friend of Wilders who backed the far-right politician's bid to visit Australia in 2012, was disappointed that his visa was not processed straight away.

"Geert Wilders is a democratically elected member of a sovereign ally of Australia and he has never advocated violence of any sort," Bernardi said.

He warned that denying Wilders a visa "would reflect extremely badly on the [political] discourse of this country."

Bernardi argued that Wilders should be allowed to tour, reflecting Australia's strong commitment to freedom of speech. "I expected more from a Liberal government, quite frankly," he said.

Wilders ran into trouble when he tried to visit Australia in 2012. The then Labor government stalled on issuing his visa, which in turn forced the organisers of his speaking tour to cancel and reschedule the events. He was later granted access to the country and undertook the speaking tour in early 2013.

AUSSIE cricket great Brett Lee says he was actually quite comfortable filming his first ever sex scene. 
 
The former Test fast bowler stars in Australian-made, Bollywood-themed romantic comedy unINDIAN, which premiered in Sydney on Wednesday and is released around Australia next Thursday, October 15.

The 38-year-old has filmed music video clips, commercials and made brief cameos in television and Bollywood movies before, but the Australian Indian Film Fund movie is his first leading role in a major film.

Lee stars as a typical Aussie who falls in love with a single-mother from an Indian background and explores the layers of Indian cultures within Australia.

The most striking test of Lee's acting skills comes midway through the film when he films a sex scene with Bollywood co-star Tannishtha Chatterjee.


The scene shows the 310 Test wicket-taker and Chatterjee appearing naked during the scene set in the female lead's bedroom, but Lee reveals the scene was not captured how you might imagine.

Lee said he was nervous leading up to the scene, but credits director Anupam Sharma for making both actors feel comfortable during the slightly awkward act.






"To feel so comfortable going in to doing the sex scene or the erotic scene, which was all done tastefully. Yes, it was embarrassing, but I found that emotional scene, getting myself set for that, was probably the hardest thing."

Sharma, who has been friends with Lee since they filmed an ad together for Kingfisher beer in Adelaide several years ago, said he has no regrets about using Lee in such a pivotal role in the film.

"I'll let people make their own judgement," he said.

"His family saw it and I think they gave it the best compliment, they said in the beginning, after five minutes we didn't think it was Brett Lee, we thought it was Will Anderson.

An Atlanta-based man has been fired from his job after posting a picture to Facebook mocking a black child.

Geris Hilton, also known as Gerod Roth, posted the picture, depicting himself and the son of a co-worker, which then garnered several racist comments from his Facebook followers.

Commenting on the picture, users on the site left comments such as, "I didn't know you were a slave owner" and "Pls [sic] tell me his name is Toby [stolen African child from book, Roots]?"

Hilton also took part in the attack, responding to the comment, "Dude where the hell did you get a black kid??", with "He was feral".

When prompted to explain why the little boy was "feral", the man responded with, "Because he was abandoned in the Atlanta projects, to fend for himself, he is deaf mute, ca't [sic] properly communicate and is in and out of a shelter home, that is the definition of feral."

Mr Hilton has since been fired from both his jobs over his comments, and several other companies in Atlanta have announced they have terminated the contracts of those seen commenting.

Michael Da Graca Pinto, the President of the Polaris Marketing Group where both Sydney and Mr Hilton were employed, issued a statement that he was "disgusted" to learn of Mr Hilton's attack on Cayden.

"It breaks my heart that Sydney and her adorable*(ABOMINABLE)* son Cayden were subjected to such hateful, ignorant and despicable behaviour. Cayden visits my office almost every afternoon after day care, he's sat at my dinner table and I consider him a part of the PMG family," wrote Mr Pinto, "The atrocious lies, slander and racism he and his mother have been forced to endure are wholly intolerable. ... It has no place in the world."

AUSTRALIA will increase its Syrian refugee intake in the wake of the European humanitarian crisis although total refugee numbers will not rise.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has ordered Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to make a mercy mission to Geneva to meet with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and advise Australia is prepared to play a greater role, after photos of drowned Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi shocked the world and put a human face to the crisis..

Australian officials gave briefings to Germany, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Finland and a European Commission representative in Sydney on April 30.

The US and Canada also had representatives at the full round meeting of the Intergovernmental Consultations for Migration, Asylum and Refugees.

As the number of Syrian refugees fleeing Islamic State and making the dangerous journey to Europe continues to swell, Australia is prepared to increase its Syrian intake above 30 per cent of our total refugee numbers.

It's believed Mr Abbott's preference is to drop the percentage of other nations because Australia has already committed to increasing the total intake from 13,750 places per year to 18,750 by 2018-19.

On Sunday Premier Jay Weatherill said South Australia could "absolutely" accept more refugees from the region.

"We certainly will be offering South Australia as an open and welcoming destination for those Syrians fleeing violence," Mr Weatherill said.

"I would like the Commonwealth to open the hearts of the nation of Australia to the people, Syrians, that are fleeing violence and persecution."

A mother has been left appalled after her son discovered 'combat Islamic takeover' stickers while playing in a park in Melbourne's north east.

The woman and child were waiting for a bus at Olympic village reserve in Heidelberg West on Monday morning when the young boy innocently retrieved the offensive material plastered over the playground by an anti-Islam group, who call themselves 'Combat 18' after a neo-Nazi organisation.

He immediately raised questions with his mother.

'His exact words when giving it to me: "They are going to kill us, aren't they?" She posted to Facebook.
She said that students at Monash University in Melbourne's south east had seen similar posters around the campus with the slogan, 'save the white race.'



'In the last few days, I have seen a few incidents of stickers being discovered,' Ms Veiszadeh told Daily Mail Australia.

'We are particularly concerned about the discovery of such material at a playground frequented by children from a variety of ethnically diverse backgrounds.



'The younger generation do not understand it at all and ask the question, "why would someone hate us?"

'Islamophobia has devastating consequences for the entire community but its impact on children and young people, whom are particularly vulnerable, is quite worrying.



'I always get shocked when I see incidents like this reported.

'It begs the question - what role do we adults play in fostering an environment in which bigotry and prejudice can flourish.'

"I know mum has made mistakes but she's my mum and I love her," she said.

Angela Russell, 40, was serving a jail sentence in Townsville, Queensland, after being convicted of stealing.

In April, she was due to be released after three months in custody but was instead informed her visa had been cancelled and she would be sent to Wickham Point ready for deportation to New Zealand.

Ms Russell had previously served jail sentences for similar offences.

Her daughter is living by herself in the Western Queensland town of Blackwater and contacted the NT News in the hope she could get answers about what was happening with Ms Russell's case.

"I don't want her to be sent to New Zealand, she has lived in Australia since she was three, all of her family is here," she said.

"I miss her so much."

It's been four months since Ms Russell was first detained in Wickham Point – she has appealed the government's decision to cancel her visa.

Last month the NT News reported there were 12 New Zealanders detained at Wickham Point as a result of the federal government's changes to the Migration Act.

Under new powers conferred on Immigration and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton late last year people convicted of crimes could have their visas revoked.

Mr Dutton previously said those targeted under the Act would be sex offenders, bikies and drug traffickers.

A spokesman for Mr Dutton said yesterday Ms Russell's visa was cancelled "on character grounds under Section 501 of the Migration Act".

A RACIST rant sourced from a neo-Nazi website has been published in the SA Country Women's Association's state magazine under a fake name, leaving members offended.

The opinion column appears as a "Thought for the month'' in this month's edition but the supposed author, a CWA member in Port Lincoln, has denied any knowledge of it.

While supporting migrants who came to Australia during the early 1900s in the first dozen paragraphs, the column launches an attack in its conclusion.

"So here we are in 2014 with a new kind of immigrant, who wants the same rights and privileges but not to learn or speak English,'' the opinion column states.

"I drink beer, I eat pork and I want my Australia back.''

The opinion piece was in fact copied from a 2008 blog post on the Canadian neo-Nazi website Stormfront, which has as its motto "Every month is white history month''.

The only difference in the wording comes from the word Canadian being removed and replaced with Australian.

Angry CWA members have contacted The Advertiser to express their shock at the letter, which they say does not represent the organisation, many members of which support migrant women on their arrival in Australia.

One Adelaide CWA member, Linda Pennock, said she and other members were shocked when the rant was printed in this month's edition of the magazine, under the heading "And so say all of us''.

Ms Pennock said that "everything about the CWA was extending the hand of friendship''.

"This does not represent us at all, and none of us can even work out how it got there. There was a flurry of phone calls going around as soon as it was published and some people have been terribly offended."

The woman whose name appears above the opinion piece confirmed on Tuesday she is a member of the Port Lincoln CWA, but denied she had submitted it for the magazine.

"I'm looking at it here, my husband has got it for me, but that is not mine, and I'm the only one of that name over here,'' she said.

The Advertiser has chosen not to publish her name.

The CWA, whose slogan is "Caring and sharing with action'', is a service organisation which raises money for charity and helps the needy.

The Advertiser understands the Plympton branch of the CWA has sent a strongly-worded protest to CWA headquarters in Kent Town, which has also received protest phone calls. Other members have sent letters of complaint to the supposed Port Lincoln author .

The CWA was unable to explain how the rant came to be published. State president Linda Bertram couldn't be contacted for comment..

Stormfront is a global internet-based white power organisation and the author of the blog urged readers to use the letter and disseminate it throughout the world.

The wording of the rant is almost identical, the CWA magazine version stating: "They (migrants to Australia 100 years ago) made learning English a primary rule in their new households, and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.''
