Federal Liberal senator Lucy Gichuhi has been forced to pay back thousands of dollars after taxpayers footed the bill for two family members to be flown in to celebrate her birthday.


The South Australian senator, 56, held a '50th birthday plus GST' in Adelaide last October, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

She has since said it was an administrative error involving misunderstanding of travel rules.

According to the publication, records show she billed taxpayers $2139 for two return airfares from Darwin to Adelaide as part of her 'family traveller' allowance.

The 'family traveller' allowance is a fund that can be used to pay for family members to visit politicians on '­parliamentary, electorate or official business'.

WOOLWORTHS is wishing some customers a "Happy Ramadan" — but not everybody is celebrating.

The supermarket giant has Ramadan promotions in 239 stores in areas with big Muslim populations.

At Sunshine's Marketplace Woolworths, posters and a display of nuts and dried fruit greet customers.

The month-long Islamic religious festival involves fasting in daylight hours.

But some customers have complained the promotion is offensive and un-Australian.

On the supermarket's Facebook page, one person accused the chain of "pandering to a minority".

Another said: "I find this kind of advertising OFFENSIVE, as an Australian & as a female!!!".

And another said the signs were offensive to her beliefs and she would boycott stores where they were displayed.

Woolworths spokesman Russell Mahoney said the promotion was running in 239 stores around Australia.

"We celebrate as many international festivities as possible to support the diverse population of Australia," he said.

That included Diwali, Lunar New Year and Passover.

Islamic Council of Victoria secretary Ghaith Krayem welcomed Woolworths' promotion and said people who opposed such initiatives did so out of ignorance and unsubstantiated fears.

"Ramadan is a time of reflection and renewal and maybe it is also a time for all of us to be inclusive rather than push each other away."

A Scottish YouTube star has been fined £800 ($US1,100) for posting clips of his girlfriend's pug giving Nazi salutes.

Mark Meechan, who posts under the username "Count Dankula," taught Buddha the dog how to respond to Nazi statements and posted a video of it in April 2016.

Various clips in the video show Buddha coming to attention and raising its paw when Meechan says statements like "Sieg Heil" and "gas the Jews."

The original video was viewed more than three million times before it was taken down. Count Dankula's YouTube channel remains active, with more than 184,000 subscribers.

The 30-year-old was convicted of committing a hate crime last month, and ordered to pay the £800 fine on Monday.


Meechan previously denied any wrongdoing and claimed that he had only made the video to annoy his girlfriend.

Regardless, Airdrie Sheriff Court found him guilty of a charge under Britain's Communications Act because the video was "anti-semitic and racist in nature," the BBC reported.

Meechan's trial has opened up a debate over the principle of freedom of speech, with many of his supporters criticising the court's decision on his behalf.

"For decades, our coverage was racist" reads the forthright headline for National Geographic as the iconic magazine looks back at its coverage of people of colour.

National Geographic called on University of Virginia professor Jason Mason to examine its history of covering people of colour in Australia, the US and around the world.

The magazine wanted to examine how it had presented race throughout its history to rise above its past.

Prof Mason, a professor of African history, said the magazine failed to acknowledge people of colour in the US, outside of labourers and domestic workers, in its early issues.

National Geographic editor-in-chief Susan Goldberg, the magazine's first female editor, described the historic coverage as "appalling".

Prof Mason said early publications up until the 1970s "did little to push its readers beyond the stereotypes ingrained in white American culture".

This included ignoring people of colour in the US and picturing "natives" abroad as "unclothed, happy hunters, noble savages - every type of cliche", and its reporting of Australia's Indigenous people - where a photo in a 1916 article depicted them as "savages".

"Some of what you find in our archives leaves you speechless, like a 1916 story about Australia. Underneath photos of two Aboriginal people, the caption reads: "South Australian Blackfellows: These savages rank lowest in intelligence of all human beings".

The exploration of National Geographic's coverage of race discusses the reporting of a massacre in South Africa in 1962 that left 69 black South Africans dead in a police shooting in Sharpeville.

The reporting barely mentioned any problems, according to Prof Mason, and did not give a voice to black South Africans.

This is in stark contrast to a piece in South Africa, published more than a decade later in 1977, which acknowledged the oppression of black South Africans.

The article shows how the publication was, for many people, a gateway to the world and continues to break down barriers using a diverse group of writers, editors and photographers to uncover untold stories.

Extract: Robert Edhouse and Melony Attwood had been on trial for the past month accused of murdering Alan Taylor at his home in the northern Perth suburb of Girrawheen in April, 2016.

Edhouse, 22 was the president of a Neo-Nazi group called Aryan Nations, while Attwood, 37, ran an affiliated group called Aryan Girls.

The sergeant-at-arms of the group, Corey Dymock, 21, also stood trial accused of murdering Mr Taylor, but he was instead found guilty of being an accessory to the murder.

Prosecutors told the trial the Aryan Nations group claimed to strive for equality in Australia "but in reality was just an affiliation of like-minded racists and white supremacists with an affinity for Hitler Nazism and the Third Reich".

There were angry scenes in court in the wake of the verdict as Edhouse lunged at Dymock, shouting: "I'll kill you".

Edhouse was pulled to the ground by courtroom security officers, while one of his relatives tried to get to the dock.

He was restrained by security guards and one of the detectives who had investigated the murder.

All three offenders were eventually taken separately into the cells.

The relative who tried to reach Edhouse in the dock was allowed to leave the building.

Mr Taylor, a fly-in fly-out worker, was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in what prosecutors said was a plan to kill him, because Attwood had tired of him and wanted to get access to his life insurance.

Edhouse had been staying at Mr Taylor's house and had begun a sexual relationship with Attwood.

A fourth person, an associate of the Aryan Nations group who could not be identified, pleaded guilty to the murder and was given a reduced sentence for testifying at the trial.

The man said he, Edhouse and Dymock had taken it in turns to hit Mr Taylor with the hammer.

Prosecutors told the trial the four had gone to see the film The Jungle Book after the crime to try to create a false alibi.

"Forty-two minutes is all it took from the time this death squad arrived at the house until time they left ... to execute their plan to kill Alan Taylor," prosecutor Justin Whalley said.

Giving evidence at the trial, Edhouse said it was the associate who had killed Mr Taylor in what he described as an "animal-like" attack.

But the Supreme Court jury, which deliberated for almost four days before delivering its verdicts, disagreed.

Attwood, who had a young son with Mr Taylor, as well as Edhouse and Dymock will face a sentencing hearing in May.

They were remanded in custody.



Edhouse is the son of Andrew Edhouse, who was found not guilty in 2001 of murdering Marc Chabriere, a bikie who was shot dead in his car in Welshpool.

The killing was part of the so-called bikie wars in Perth in the 1990s — Andrew Edhouse was associated with the Club Deroes, while Chabrieire was a member of the Coffin Cheaters.

He was not in court to see his son convicted of murder.

The man who tried to reach the dock during the chaos is believed to be Andrew Edhouse's brother.

David Swinyar, a math teacher at Kernan Middle School in Jacksonville, was suspended without pay Tuesday by Duval County Public Schools. The district had been investigating Swinyar since October, when a student's mother complained about the teacher's behavior.

That complaint led to interviews with more than two dozen students and staff members, who alleged, among other things, that Swinyar yelled at and confronted students in a "physically aggressive manner," according to a copy of the district's investigation report obtained by The Washington Post

Swinyar was also accused of making racist remarks, including using the n-word, to some of his students last semester.

"If my daughter was dating someone who used the 'f' word, I wouldn't have any respect for that n—–," Swinyar said during one of his classes, according to the report.

Several students testified that the classroom grew quiet after that, seemingly in shock over Swinyar's use of the slur. When some questioned him about it, Swinyar denied using the word, saying he would "never" do so, according to the report.

Shortly after the incident, one male student left the classroom to report Swinyar's "aggressive tone and demeanor" to his mother, but Swinyar followed the student, "began 'yelling' at him ... [and] also snatched the phone out of his hand," the report said.

Another student told district investigators that Swinyar had been discussing relationships when he told students: "If your boyfriend says bad things to you and/or treats you wrong, that means that he's acting like a n—–," and, "You all should not be dating all these different African American boys because they are not worth it."

In all, at least 24 students and several staff members gave statements about Swinyar's behavior to investigators and to the Kernan Middle School principal and assistant principal. Allegations of racist comments aside, the interviews also painted a picture of a teacher who was easily angered and who liked to "confront students by getting in their face," the report said.

"When Mr. Swinyar gets mad, he becomes aggressive," one female student testified, according to the district's report. "Additionally, Mr. Swinyar belittles students by talking down to them about their low [Florida Standards Assessments] scores. He loves to talk about politics and Donald Trump. He also talked about attending a black church. Mr. Swinyar often 'mocks' black preachers."

However, despite finding Swinyar's behavior rude, the student said that overall she thought he was a "good teacher," according to the report.

Swinyar had no past disciplinary actions on his record, the report said.

The district concluded that "there is a preponderance of evidence to support that Mr. Swinyar exercised poor judgment when he engaged in inappropriate communication in the presence of, and/or toward students."

A lone gunman has targeted foreigners in a series of drive-by shootings in a central Italian city, wounding six people, before being arrested.

Italy's interior minister Marco Minniti said the gunman had been motivated "by racial hatred" and had "a background of right-wing extremism with clear references to fascism and Nazism".

The shootings came days after the murder in Macerata of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro, whose dismembered remains were found on Wednesday in two suitcases.

A judge on Saturday confirmed the arrest of the main suspect, identified as a 29-year-old Nigerian.

The man arrested for carrying out the shootings was identified as Luca Traini, a 28-year-old Italian with no previous record.

He had run for town council on the anti-migrant Northern League's list in a local election last year in Corridonia, the party confirmed, but its mayoral candidate lost the race.

A video posted by the newspaper il Resto di Carlino showed a man with an Italian flag draped over his shoulders being arrested by armed Carabinieri officers in the city centre, a short distance from where he apparently fled his car on foot.

Macerata Mayor Romano Carancini said six foreigners were wounded in the two-hour shooting spree, one of them had life-threatening injuries.

Mr Carancini confirmed that all of the victims were black, and acknowledged that "the closeness of these two events makes you imagine that there is a connection."

Prime Minister Paul Keating's Labor cabinet was briefed on anti-mail bomb measures after the deadly attack on the Adelaide offices of the National Crime Authority and intelligence agencies expressed their concerns about the potential for terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists.

The intelligence briefings are contained in cabinet papers from 1994 and 1995 which have been released by National Archives of Australia.

It includes information on the National Front, which under leader Michael Brander ran a campaign against the "Asianisation of Adelaide" in the 1990s.

The group clashed with police and other protesters at rallies, disrupted a citizenship ceremony and jeered swimmers participating in a gay community sporting carnival.

An ASIO planning document circulated to ministers in November 1994, said the National Front was, "Active in Adelaide, with a high intent and capability to undertake acts of racist violence." Intelligence agencies were also concerned about the potential for anti-Semitic and racist attacks by other far-right groups.

"Areas of large Jewish populations, such as Sydney and Melbourne, remain the most likely areas of concern, although Adelaide is currently the centre of right wing extremism. Similarly Asian businesses have been targeted by racist groups in Perth and Adelaide. The sensitivity of race as an issue means the level of risk posed by the groups will continue to be high, requiring continued investigative action by ASIO, in conjunction with law enforcement agencies"

One intelligence document said a national bomb response strategy was being considered after a parcel bomb killed Detective Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen and seriously injured lawyer Peter Wallis in the Waymouth Street NCA office.

Although the September 11 attacks in the United States were almost seven years away, Islamic extremism was on ASIO's agenda — particularly in the wake of the 1993 car bombing of the World Trade Centre in New York.

Details of some of the terrorist groups with a presence in Australia have been redacted from the documents released on Monday (January 1) due to ongoing security concerns.

THERE were fears Australia's top secret overseas spy agency was "out of control" and needed to be reigned in following the end of the Cold War, Cabinet papers from 1994-95 reveal.

It was also a time when Islamic terrorism was increasingly coming on to the top spy's radar as a "wildcard threat".

While the security landscape in Australia today has seen the introduction of the biggest reforms to national security and foreign interference, 1995 saw the reverse taking place.

In the final sitting week of last year Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull introduced to Parliament new laws which strengthen treason and sabotage offences and new provisions designed to combat foreign interference in Australia's political system, as fears of Chinese and Russian involvement grow to "unprecedented levels".

But a 1995 cabinet submission from Justice Minister Duncan Kerr saw the offences of treachery and treason replaced with a narrower offence of treason, the repeal of offences of mutiny, assisting prisoners of war to escape and harbouring spies, as well as narrowing of espionage and sabotage laws.

"The existing provisions reflect their imperial and cold war origins and do not adequately recognise the present day realities," Mr Kerr stated.

Australia's security agencies were also becoming wary of the growing "wildcard" of Islamic extremism.

A US teenager allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend's parents just days before Christmas after they convinced their daughter to dump him due to his "neo-Nazi" views, it has been revealed.

Virginia police have charged a 17-year-old boy with the murder of Scott Fricker, 48, and his wife, Buckley Kuhn-Fricker, 43, after he allegedly broke into their Reston home and opened fire on them.

After shooting the husband and wife dead, the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, turned the gun on himself.

He survived his self-inflicted wounds and remains in hospital under guard in a "life-threatening condition", police said.

The teen allegedly opened fire on the couple at about 5am on Friday when they found him inside their 16-year-old daughter's bedroom and confronted him.

Four other people were at home at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.

Family members said Mr Fricker and Ms Kuhn-Fricker had successfully convinced their daughter to break up with the teenager after they discovered that he had spouted white supremacist views online, the Washington Post reported.

Ms Kuhn-Fricker was so concerned about what she found that she emailed the principal of the school that her daughter and the 17-year-old attended, attaching screenshots of heinous tweets and Twitter messages he had written.

The teen retweeted messages praising Adolf Hitler, supporting the Nazis, calling for a "white revolution" and vilifying Jewish people, according to the Post.

He also reportedly shared an image of a gay man being hanged, and another image of a Jewish lolly shop, under which he wrote "ima run in there with my swastika armband right now".

"I would feel a little bad reporting him if his online access was to basically be a normal teen, but he is a monster, and I have no pity for people like that," Ms Kuhn-Fricker wrote in the email. "He made these choices. He is spreading hate."

Family members told the Post that the parents staged an intervention last Wednesday to convince their daughter to break up with her boyfriend, who she had been going out with for about six months.

This is the moment a young woman is slapped in the face while holding her baby as a furious argument turns violent.

The clip filmed in Broken Bow, Oklahoma starts in the midst of a serious argument between three women.

That's the message from a Democratic National Committee data services  manager, currently on the hunt to filll multiple vacancies in the tech department.

The political organization, which routinely makes grand statements about inclusion, recently sent an email to its employees looking to recruit people for eight open spots including IT Systems Administrator, Product Manager and Chief Security Officer.


Though the Oct. 30 email says that the DNC is looking for a "staff of diverse voices and life experiences," it apparently doesn't mean white men.

DNC's Data Service Manager Madeleine Leader purportedly wrote in an email that the desire for diversity excludes "cisgender straight white males."

Leader adds, "I personally would prefer that you not forward to cisgender straight white males, as they are already in the majority."

The former chief of a small township in New Jersey has been arrested on federal hate crime and civil rights charges for what federal authorities described as a pattern of racist comments and behavior — including slamming an African American teen's head into a metal door jamb and saying that black people are "like ISIS."

Frank Nucera Jr., 60, who had been chief of the Bordentown Township Police Department, was arrested, and the charges against him were unsealed Wednesday. The allegations are notable for the blatant racism they describe in a law enforcement leader.

According to a criminal complaint in the case, filed in federal district court in New Jersey, Nucera frequently referred to African Americans by racial slurs and espoused violence toward them. In November 2015, for example, when he was talking to a subordinate officer about an African American man he believed to have slashed the tires of a police vehicle, Nucera said, "I wish that n‑‑‑‑‑ would come back from Trenton and give me a reason to put my hands on him, I'm tired of 'em. These n‑‑‑‑‑s are like ISIS, they have no value. They should line them all up and mow 'em down. I'd like to be on the firing squad, I could do it," according to the complaint

Nucera also used police dogs to intimidate African Americans, bringing canines to high school basketball games when his department was providing security and positioning them near the entrance to the gym, federal authorities alleged.

Efforts to reach Nucera's family members were not immediately successful, and no lawyer was listed for him in court records. Federal authorities said Nucera retired from the police department shortly after New Jersey's attorney general was informed of the investigation.

In 2014, Nucera was reportedly shot in the leg by his own gun after some kind of interaction with a preteen at the municipal building.

When officers arrived, according to the complaint, the teens resisted arrest. One of the officers pepper-sprayed the 18-year-old, and both teens were eventually handcuffed and taken into custody, according to the complaint.

Several minutes later, as officers were walking the 18-year-old toward a stairwell, the teen briefly stopped and began shouting, according to the complaint. Though he was not kicking or struggling, Nucera approached, grabbed the teen's head and slammed it into a metal door jamb, according to the complaint.

The officers involved described the incident to investigators, though one said he did not report it initially because he feared retaliation from Nucera. The teen initially asked to go to the hospital, complaining of a possible concussion, but ultimately changed his mind and was jailed, according to the complaint.

Chancellor Christian Kern is vowing to take his center-left Social Democrats into the opposition if defeated and a handful of small parties are struggling to clear the 4 percent hurdle needed to get seats in parliament. Thus signs point to a coalition between the People's Party and the Freedom Party — which would represent a shift with implications for the European Union.

The Freedom Party is strongly euroskeptic. And while it has long distanced itself from its Nazi roots, and its leader, Hans-Christian Strache, has dismissed his own links with neo-Nazi organizations as youthful folly, its presence in a government could present a new challenge to moderate EU governments shortly after Germany's anti-migrant and EU-critical AfD gained seats in the federal parliament for the first time.

Few saw it coming two years ago. Back then, the Social Democratic-People's Party coalition fervently backed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's open border policy, as hundreds of thousands of mostly Muslim migrants flooded into Austria and beyond in their search for a better life in Europe's heartland. The two parties criticized the Freedom Party's call for closed borders and zero migration.

But the People's Party has a new head — and a new message. Since taking over this spring, Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz has essentially usurped the Freedom Party stance on migration and fears of radical Islam as he taps into what pollsters identify as voters' greatest concern.

That will cost the Freedom Party some votes. But the Social Democrats appear to have been hurt most, with their focus on social fairness and support of the economically disadvantaged appearing to fall on less receptive ears than calls for a hard line on migrants and Muslims.

The Social Democrats won the last elections four years ago. But a Research Affairs poll this week shows them third with 23 percent support. First is the People's Party with 33 percent, followed by the Freedom Party at 27 percent. The poll with 1,000 respondents gave an error margin of 3.10 percentage points.

Previously associated with stagnation and lack of direction, the People's Party was trailing in third place until Kurz took leadership in May after securing party pledges of full authority.

And instead of the normal six-year waiting period for Austrian citizenship, those receiving asylum should wait for 10 years, he says.

Such calls attract Austrians who support the Freedom Party and Strache, its leader on migration, but dislike the radical way the populist party frames the debate. Kurz, says political analyst Thomas Hofer, "uses a different kind of language, and it's not extreme language — it's plain talk."

And Kurz has something else in his favor for an electorate disaffected with the status quo. "He was able — even though he was in government for more than six years — to present himself as the 'change guy," says Hofer.

California took another step towards enforcing the 'rights' of transgenders by passing a bill that could enforce jail time on people who "willfully and repeatedly" decline to use a senior transgender patient's "preferred name or pronouns."

The law states that if provisions are violated, the violator could be punished by a fine "not to exceed one thousand dollars" or "by imprisonment in the county jail for a period not to exceed one year," or both.

The sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener, has argued adamantly that nobody is going to be criminally prosecuted for using the wrong pronoun.

"It's just more scare tactics by people who oppose all LGBT civil rights and protections," he said in a statement last month.

But the language seemingly allows for the possibility, however remote.

Among the unlawful actions are "willfully and repeatedly" failing to use a transgender person's "preferred name or pronouns" after he or she is "clearly informed of the preferred name or pronouns."

One opponent of the law, the California Family Council's Greg Burt, slammed the measure when the bill was in its early stages.

Both Rudd and Prime Minister Theresa May have frequently expressed interest in cracking down on the Internet and implementing censorship.

After Rudd was recently asked by an individual why she wants to stop encryption when it was proven that she didn't understand how it works, the Home Secretary replied, "It's so easy to be patronised in this business."

"We will do our best to understand it. We will take advice from other people. But I do feel that there is a sea of criticism for any of us who try and legislate in new areas, who will automatically be sneered at and laughed at for not getting it right," she expressed. "I don't need to understand how encryption works to understand how it's helping the criminals. I will engage with the security services to find the best way to combat that."

Four people were injured in the incident and the alleged attacker, who is also a student, is now in police custody. He has been described as an 18-year-old caucasian male and was "not known to police or intelligence agencies".

ANU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Marnie Hughes-Warrington said the students showed "incredible bravery to protect the lecturer".

"All indications are at this stage is that it is an isolated incident," she said.

"The student stood up at the back of the classroom and approached the lecturer, and other students intervened, and that is how the injuries occurred."

The male student entered an ANU tutorial room in the Copland Building and allegedly assaulted four students and their lecturer at around 9.15am Friday.

The students were taking a class in statistics at the time. The classroom is near the student union building.

Early reports suggested the attacks were random in nature, but ANU student newspaper Woroni reported that the man "appeared to attack students of Asian appearance".

Second year student Zhuangzhuang Niu found out about the attack through a group chat.

"I heard it was a Chinese girl who got hit in the head with a bat. It's quite serious," he told News Corp.

"I don't think the attack was targeted. Most of the students in the class were Asian."

When it comes to establishing a racist foothold in North Dakota, Craig Cobb just cannot catch a break.

Last week, a church he bought in Nome, North Dakota, to build a Creativity Movement chapel burned to the ground in what investigators believe may have been arson. The fire happened on March 22, the same day a local newspaper ran a story on Cobb's plans to turn the church into a gathering place for the racist Creativity movement.

A self-styled religious organization, the Creativity Movement promotes what it sees as the inherent superiority and "creativity" of the white race. Its adherents believe that race, not religion, is the embodiment of absolute truth and that the white race is the highest expression of culture and civilization.

Cobb has reacted to the fire with anger and warnings that he may rebuild the building, this time with a special name.

"The President Donald J. Trump Creativity Church of Rome," Cobb told the (New York) Daily News on Tuesday. "That's the name, because it's beautiful. President Trump is like a god emperor, can do no wrong." That term, "god emperor," has gained popularity on the racist right, which views President Trump as an advocate for the movement's fears.

Cobb has spent years trying to establish racist enclaves. At least two North Dakota towns have seen Cobb come come through, most famously in 2013 when he bought more than a dozen properties in Leith for just a few hundred dollars, hoping to attract other racists to the area.

After terrorizing Leith for months, an ordeal detailed in the documentary Welcome to Leith, Cobb was arrested after he paraded through the streets with a rifle. He was originally charged with seven felony counts of terrorizing, which would have carried a maximum sentence of 30 years, but was sentenced to four years probation in 2014.

It's unclear what Cobb plans to do next, though he has a long history of relentlessly antagonizing his enemies. But, for their part, residents seem relieved the fire may have thwarted his plans.

TORCH-wielding white supremacists are marching through Charlottesville, Virginia, shouting 'unite the right' and 'you will not replace us' — and calling for a split from the United States.

Hundreds of protesters have today clashed briefly with counterprotesters on the Charlottesville campus of the University of Virginia ahead of a planned rally tomorrow.

Punches were thrown and placards used as bludgeons before authorities reacted.


Police used teargas to disperse the groups, which have been assembling in the flashpoint Southern State town of 45,000 residents over a dispute relating to the statue of a Southern Civil War hero.

"I am beyond disgusted by this unsanctioned and despicable display of visual intimidation on a college campus," Mayor Mike Singer said in a statement.

Virginia's governor has urged people to stay away from the weekend rallies of far right and white supremacist groups in the university town of Charlottesville.

Some 2000 to 6000 'Unite the Right' supporters are expected to march later this weekend. The National Guard is on alert because of a believed high risk of violence.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has said extremist groups have threatened to try and turn the rally into a fight.

McAuliffe, a Democrat, said many of the people at the rally will "express viewpoints many people, including me, find abhorrent. As long as that expression is peaceful, that is their right." He said he had given security forces instructions to act quickly and decisively if violence breaks out.

"I want to urge my fellow Virginians, who may consider joining, either in support or opposition to the planned rally, to make alternative plans," McAuliffe said.

HUNGARIAN Gabor Urban came to Australia with his family, three tertiary degrees and hope for a new life.


Now he's leaving in despair, after dozens of failed job applications, crippling expenses and a warning for anyone hoping to build a new life on a student visa.


Mr Urban, 46, and his wife Barbara Bali, 44, moved to Adelaide a year ago, believing that his MBA qualification and degrees in English-language teaching, postgraduate business, economics would help him secure a job.


But their ages left them five points short of securing skilled migrant visas, and on the advice of migration agents, Mrs Bali applied for a student visa to study an MBA.


In Hungary, Mr Urban was a regional manager for tyre corporation Goodyear Dunlop and his wife was a manager at energy giant Shell.


But in the two months after he arrived in June last year, Mr Urban applied for 150 jobs, visited 60 companies and 22 recruitment agencies without success.


He tried applying for administration and sales rep positions, even shelf-stacking at the supermarket — but the answer was still no.


"I was told by a recruitment agency that I should dumb down my CV to one page," he said.


Eventually in January, he found a job through a parent of his daughter's school friend, building fire doors despite having no carpentry skills.


"I like to have a job but it's wasting my knowledge, 20 years of experience," he said.


"It's a catch-22 ... student visa status requires us to pay a lot for basic education and insurance but employers will only offer low-paid jobs in case of student visa status."


The family will return to Budapest next Monday, despite their visa being valid for another year.


Their $8000 monthly expenses, including public school fees for their three children and Mrs Bali's MBA costs, are eating up their savings.


"Australia is the most liveable country in the world, but only for Australians," Mr Urban said. "We didn't come here to be millionaires or for the beach or the sunshine, we want to live a valued life with our kids, spend a lot of time with them and get paid for what we are worth when working."


Their 17-year-old son Benjamin now has to leave his beloved soccer club Vipers despite efforts to stay and complete Year 12.


Ms Bali said she was told by the State Government's international education agency that Benjamin has to switch to an international student visa — costing $15,000 — to continue Year 11 and 12 in Adelaide.


Bids for scholarships or other funding failed and they now had no choice but to return to Hungary. Mr Urban said they were not the only family who held misplaced hope after moving to Australia.


"We are choosing to leave now while we still can, there are others who can't even pay for plane tickets," he said.


He warned that student visas should not be used as a tool by people wanting to migrate to Australia.


"If you want to move to Australia, if you're using student visa as a tool for migration, forget it," he said.


"A lot of people think we migrants are taking managerial jobs, but when we leave, more people from Centrelink can get these low paid jobs which we were doing."

THE Austrian state acted within the law when it seized Adolf Hitler's birth house from its private owner early this year, the country's Constitutional Court rules.


The owner had appealed the expropriation of her building in Braunau. The state took it away from her so that authorities can completely alter its appearance, in the hopes this will stop it from being an attraction for far- right extremists who have been visiting the site.

The move was in the public interest and was not excessive, the court said in its ruling."The relentless rejection of national socialism has been a founding principle of the Republic of Austria since it was resurrected in 1945," the judges wrote. Therefore, the state has the duty to ensure that the birthplace of the Nazi dictator is not misused, they concluded"There is evidence that the seized property could become a site of pilgrimage or identification to foster national socialist or neo-Nazi ideology," they said. Extremists routinely travel to Braunau to have their pictures taken in front of the building.

The woman who had owned the house had been blocking attempts by authorities to negotiate its future, according to the government.

Victoria's Premier has apologised to the state's Chinese community for the racism and unjust policies their ancestors endured during Australia's gold rush era.

Premier Daniel Andrews issued the apology to a crowd of Chinese community leaders today, including several descendants of the first wave of Chinese miners to come to the state 160 years ago.

"It is never too late to say sorry," Mr Andrews said.

"To every Chinese Victorian ... on behalf of the Victorian Parliament, of behalf of the Victorian Government, I express our deepest sorrow and I say to you we are profoundly sorry."


How bloody stupid! They should apologise to us for parasiting our colony and driving down living standards with cheap labour and ripping off our people by working in teams to sneak their gold from them!
