At least 10 12 16 people have been killed at Bondi Beach in Sydney after two gunmen of Middle Eastern appearance opened fire at crowds gathered for a Chanukah by the Sea event.

The black-clad gunmen, one armed with a shotgun, one with a rifle, started shooting at about 6.30pm on Sunday evening as hundreds gathered for the Jewish festival, and witnesses reported hearing more than 50 shots.

At 9pm NSW Police confirmed 10 people were dead, including one of the gunmen, with the other shooter in a critical condition. 11 other people are injured, including two police officers, and Premier Chris Minns later said the death toll had risen to 12 16.

A senior law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ABC News one of the gunmen was named Naveed Akram, and that police were raiding his home in Bonnyrigg, western Sydney.

Police say they have two men in custody after multiple people were reportedly injured Sunday in a mass shooting at Bondi Beach.

Multiple videos posted to social media show two gunmen standing on a footbridge connecting Campbell Parade to the Bondi Pavilion, firing shots into a crowd.

The men could be seen firing guns into the crowd as people screamed and sprinted for cover.

A number of people could be seen lying injured and unmoving on the grass at North Bondi.

Others were being loaded into ambulances on stretches while onlookers attempted to provide support.

There are reports of multiple casualties, but no details have been confirmed by authorities.

Separate footage showed officers standing guard over a hunting rifle lying on the ground with an exclusion zone in place.

"Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area," the force said in a statement.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said 12 16 people were killed and was targeted at the event attendees during a press conference late on Sunday night.

'This attack was designed to target Sydney's Jewish community on the first day of Channukah,' he said.

Up to 25 injured people, including two police officers, have been taken to various hospitals in Sydney.

One of the gunmen who opened fire has been confirmed as Naveed Akram, 24, from Bonnyrigg in Sydney's south-west.

Akram was shot, arrested and remains in custody, where he is being treated by emergency services.

The second gunman has been shot dead.

The beach was crowded with hundreds of tourists and locals at the end of a 30C summer day.

Video obtained by the Daily Mail shows a heroic man creeping up behind one of the gunmen via the carpark at the north end of the beach, and then wrestling him to the ground.

The hero then waves a rifle in the man's face.

The gunman then walks away and the hero drops the rifle.

At this point, the first gunman is seen joining his accomplice on the bridge, where he picks up another rifle. The pair take cover behind the bridge wall and fire their weapons outward.

Two members of the public, including the man who initially tackled the shooter, attempt to take cover behind a tree. The bystander who disarmed the gunman is later seen with a visible injury to his arm. He walks away holding it before collapsing.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been heavily criticised for repeatedly bringing up "right-wing extremism" when asked about the Muslim terrorist attack at Bondi that left 16 dead.

One of the gunmen, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, was investigated by spy agency ASIO for links to an Islamic State terror cell, but his Pakistani immigrant father Sajid Akram, 50, was allowed to hold a gun licence and owned six firearms.

Sajid was shot dead by police and Naveed is in a critical condition in a Sydney hospital. An IS flag was found in the car they drove to the scene along with a homemade bomb.

When asked about ASIO's advice on the terror threat on Monday, Mr Albanese suddenly brought up "the rise of right-wing extremist groups", and then in an interview with ABC's 730 that evening again deflected to the "far-right" while saying gun laws needed to be "updated for the change in threat".

"We live in a more dangerous world in 2025, the threat of anti-Semitism, as we have seen, is very real, threats of other occurrences such as the rise of the far-right, which had also been identified, of course, by [ASIO boss] Mike Burgess, also a threat as well," the prime minister said.

But many in Australia and around the world objected to Mr Albanese highlighting right-wing extremism, including popular X account Libs of TikTok who weighed in with a viral post.

"Following a terrorist attack targeting Jews in Sydney by Islamic terrorists, the Prime Minister of Australia warns about 'right-wing extremism'," Libs of TikTok wrote in a caption while sharing a clip from content creator Australians vs. The Agenda.

"Having Anthony Albanese as our PM is now an international embarrassment," he responded.

"Right wing positions of mass deportations and limiting legal migration would have saved lives in this case. Right wing 'extremism' would have saved lives. I'm so sick of this. People pretend the solutions don't exist and blame the people with the ACTUAL solutions as racist," replied former US Department of Energy nuclear scientist Matt Van Swol.

"'Right wing extremist' groups aren't massacring innocent people," wrote prominent lawyer and former Liberal candidate Katherine Deves.

"The left doing politics. Much serious. Instead of focusing on the real and rising problem of radical Islam, they shadow box at the imaginary bogeymans of gun control and 'right wing'," she said in a separate reply to the 730 comments.

"Is this dickhead really pulling a Keir Starmer and trying to deflect to the "rise of the far right"? Are you kidding me," wrote Celine Baumgarten on X.

"How the heck did right wing extremists get into this conversation?" asked another confused Aussie.

"Same leftist agenda playbook being deployed. Use murderous Islamic atrocities and twist the narrative to make it about 'right wing' extremism. Same tactic was used by Starmer after the Southport slayings in the UK," observed a third user.

Mr Albanese's comments came as he and NSW Premier Chris Minns focused on strengthening gun laws during the aftermath of the massacre, rather than on the terrorists and their religion or ideology.

Federal, state and territory governments then agreed on a major overhaul of Australia's firearms legislation, including limiting the number of guns that can be owned by one person, and limiting open-ended licensing.

Another wave of extremism is sweeping Sydney, this time targeting people of Middle Eastern appearance.NSW Police on Monday night confirmed it is aware of a planned 'bashing day' on Cronulla Beach, south Sydney, on December 27.

'WE RIOT. WOG/MIDDLE EASTERN BASHING DAY. SATURDAY 27TH DECEMBER 2025,' it states.

The post is mostly being shared on Snapchat, where messages disappear after 24 hours, but has also made appearances on Facebook and TikTok.

While not explicitly stated in the post, it's understood the 'bashing day' is an act of retribution following the mass shooting at Bondi Beach - which saw two men of Middle Eastern appearance target a Jewish event on Sunday, killing 15.

Most commenters under the posts have condemned the apparent call to action.

The work colleague of the shooter claims the crook was 1/2 Indian and 1/2 Italian and he and his Dad converted to Islam.

FACTS: Neither was a convert to Islam. 1. The shooters - Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24, - were father and son. 2. The father was born in Pakistan and arrived in Australia on a STUDENT VISA in 1998, which he transferred to a partner visa in 2001. He has held a resident return visa ever since.

The son, an Australian-born citizen, was investigated by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) for six months in 2019 over close ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State terrorism cell, but it was determined that being a brown skinned protected minority, he must be left alone to pursue his entitled freedom of belief and freedom of speech. - While peaceful Australian White Nationalists and Creators are hounded by Australian police and intelligence services, labelled as "terrorists," deported, refused justice and thrown out of hospitals and refused care for THOUGHT CRIMES and WRONG THINK.

Both the father and son pledged allegiance to ISIS having travelled to known JIHAD terrorist training regions. Australian government and intelligence services primary concerns are FAR-RIGHT WHITES who question the concept of MASS THIRD WORLD IMMIGRATION.
