Excerpt: Police allege a Vietnamese organised crime syndicate was behind an alleged plot to kill a man at a southwest Sydney childcare centre, the latest in a series of horrific Asian gang attacks.

Heavily armed NSW Police officers arrested two aboriginals and a Pacific Islander – Greall Tighe, 18, Kevin Mundine, 19, and Tyrone Tuiluga Rio, 26 – in two car stops on The River Road in Revesby on Tuesday, and police alleged on Wednesday they were en route to carry out a murder.

Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook said the intended victim "has links to crime and... was targeted due to what we think was a breakdown in the transnational organised crime network", and that the three alleged gunmen were hired to carry out the hit.

The alleged murder plot comes after a number of violent incidents involving Vietnamese organised crime in Sydney, including the alleged abduction and murder of a mother from Bankstown in April, and a six-day alleged murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and torture spree last year.

Terrifying scenes have unfolded inside a busy Melbourne shopping centre, with two people caught on camera wildly swinging machetes at each other in front of stunned shoppers.

The violent clash kicked off in the carpark of Broadmeadows Central on Friday night before spilling into the retail precinct — sending staff scrambling for cover behind locked security doors

Footage shows the pair — both wearing balaclavas — slashing at each other in a sword-like standoff near a café, while another clip captures them trading blows outside a jewellery store.

Screams echo through the centre as the chaos unfolds.

In a social media post, Broadmeadows central management said they are co-operating with police over the matter.

"We do not tolerate criminal or antisocial behaviour in our centres and are committed to supporting Victoria Police in their investigation," they said on Facebook.

"We understand this has been distressing for our customers and retail teams, and want to thank everyone for their support. The safety and wellbeing of our customers, retailers, team members and community is always our highest priority

"The centre is open for trade as usual this morning, with an increased security presence.
