New public schools in Victoria will be given First Nations names under a policy aimed at ensuring students recognise the land's traditional owners.

The Victorian government revealed 14 new public schools will be given Indigenous-language names when they open their doors in 2024

The Indigenous titles come after the Department of Education changed its School and Campus Naming Policy to prioritise local First Nations culture and heritage.

The policy is part of Daniel Andrews government's effort to action the Treaty and Truth elements of the Uluru Statement from the Heart to better recognise and represent First Nations culture and language.

Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins visited Yarrabing Secondary College in Aintree - formerly known as Aintree Secondary School - on Monday to reveal the new school names along with the names of four new kindergartens on school sites

Yarrabing is a Woi-wurrung word of the Wurundjeri people meaning 'white gum', and was drawn from a a short-list of Aboriginal names.

Geographic Names Victoria and Traditional Owner Groups worked together to pick the names after a two-week community consultation process received more than 7,000 submissions.

'These 14 new schools will ensure growing communities have a great local education for their kids and a unique connection to the land through their Indigenous names,' Ms Hutchins said.

Other names include Walcom Ngarrwa Secondary College in Werribee, named with the Wadawurring words meaning 'steps to knowledge' and Laa Yulta Primary School in Black Forrest, named with the Wadawurrung word meaning 'many stones'.

The names of the four new Kindergartens on school sites will be Laa Yulta Primary School Kindergarten, Wimba Primary School Kindergarten, Warreen Primary School Kindergarten and Murnong Kindergarten.

We all have to marvel these primative Abos and honour them to the point we re- name everything they couldn't create themselves with Boong names!

The colonising of Australia by Engkandvwas the best thing that could've happened at the time as others would have done and done a worse job of it! It is delusional to think a land full of resources would not be eyed by others for 230 years whilst Abos played caveman all that time.

Anthony Albanese has supported a treaty with Aboriginal Australians for nearly four decades, it has been revealed, as an open letter he signed in 1986 which outlined a demand for reparations resurfaces

The then 23-year-old leftwing activist signed the open letter to The National Times, dated April 18, 1986, with Indigenous leaders Pat Dodson and Marcia Langton.

The letter supported the 'granting of land rights and appropriate compensation' for the 'invasion of Aboriginal land'.

It called for 'recognition of (Aboriginal) sovereignty, land rights, and compensation for lands lost and for social and cultural disruption'.

Mr Dodson and Ms Langton, who are both heavily involved in the 'Yes' campaign ahead of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum, were listed as points of contact for readers seeking more information.

The revelation comes as the Albanese-led Labor government moves to distance the concept of treaty - and any suggestion of compensation for Indigenous Australians - from the Voice referendum, to be held between October and December.

However, the Prime Minister took the concept of treaty to the 2022 election and has already set aside $5.8million to start the process with a Makarrata Commission

He has also repeatedly vowed his full support for the principals outlined in the Uluru Statement from the Heart:  'Voice, Treaty and Truth.

A government spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that 'consultation on a Makarrata and progress on its design would only take place following the referendum'. 

However, with the referendum now just three months away and with polls showing support for the Voice is softening, Mr Albanese and his ministry are hesitant to link treaty-making and truth-telling to the Voice.

He told ABC Radio National on Wednesday morning he will not move to negotiate a treaty or treaties in his first term - contradicting an election campaign vow he made in November 2021 in which he said a Makarrata Commission would be required to report to the Labor government on treaty progress within Mr Albanese's first term.

The National Indigenous Australians Agency confirmed earlier this year that progress on the Makarrata Commission has been paused until after the referendum.

At the time, Senator Lidia Thorpe said: 'The government's handbook on questions related to First Nations issues now is an automatic response saying "we'll deal with that after the Referendum".

'They have spent $900,000 on Truth and Treaty and have nothing to show for it. Less than a year ago Minister Burney was speaking about how the public shouldn't forget that the Uluru Statement was about Truth and Treaty as well as the Voice

A secret Aboriginal land rights deal is set to give Indigenous groups sweeping powers over 10 Victorian councils spanning half the size of Tasmania.


The sweeping proposal, which was signed between the Andrews government and Barengi Gadjin Land Council, gives Indigenous groups power to name and rename all roads, bridges and public spaces.

Councils were blindsided by the agreement and were only made aware of the deal one month ago when it became 'fait accompli' - a thing accomplished or decided before those affected hear about it, leaving them with no option but to accept.

The 'expanded settlement package' was signed in October 2022 by Victorian Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes along with the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk (WJJWJ) Peoples.

Indigenous groups will also be given 'preferential' access to council procurement contracts and jobs, as well as power to co-manage biosecurity and waterways
