One of the architects of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament has spoken about the proposal being a step towards reparations and compensation being paid to Aboriginal people


'Pay the Rent' for example, how do we do that in a way that is transparent and that actually sees reparations and compensation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people beyond what we say and do at a rally?'

'It is a really important campaign and there's a very specific lot of asks and a clear invitation to the Australian people to walk with us.'

The 'Pay the Rent' movement wants homeowners to voluntarily pay a percentage of their income to Aboriginal elders without any government oversight or intervention.

It has been backed by left-wing author Clementine Ford and independent senator and activist Lidia Thorpe.

Daily Mail Australia sought comment from Mr Mayo about the comments. 

Opponents of the Voice have claimed this movement exposes the true goal of Yes campaigners as being the making of payments to  Aboriginal people.

It comes as controversy surrounds a comment Mr Mayo made in another video where he said politicians would be 'punished' if they ignored advice from the advisory body.

In that video, which was also published by the Search Foundation in 2021, Mr Mayo tries to shut down criticism that an advisory body to the government would be 'weak'.
