An Indigenous Senator has blasted a bizarre brief appearance by basketball legend  Shaquille O'Neal at Anthony Albanese's press conference on Saturday.

The star was supposed to be pledging his support for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament - but instead delivered a couple of vague platitudes and quickly left.

Now Country Liberals Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has branded the PM"s publicity stunt as 'clueless and out of touch

She added: 'I've no doubt Shaq's a top bloke but it's a bit insulting to call on a black American to help with black Australians as if this is all about the colour of one's skin.' ... IT'S ABOUT RACE!

Waleed Aly has sparked debate with his co-hosts on The Project by calling for an Indigenous elder to replace Queen Elizabeth II as Australia's head of state

The monarchy versus republic debate has been reignited in Australia as the official mourning period comes to a close following the Queen's death a fortnight ago.

As Australians commemorated the National Day of Mourning on Thursday, Aly suggested an alternative approach having an Indigenous elder as Australia's future head of state instead of a monarch or president.

But co-host Carrie Bickmore disagreed, arguing people still want consistency after having a Queen for 70 years.

Aly believes if Australians are asked to forego the monarch, it needs to be replaced with something more fitting but magical.

'An Australian President doesn't offer the sense of constancy, history or ritual we'll be replacing,' Aly explained

'If we're going to do this, we need to draw on our own sources of tradition, ceremony and spirituality.'

A self-confessed republican, Aly see the monarchy as unchanging, draped in history, tradition and ritual. 

'In short, monarchy becomes a kind of foil to government. It works specifically because it's undemocratic and imposes relatively little on citizens,' he said.

'It's powerful precisely because it has no real power. The Queen was loved because she was so frequently silent, so often a blank canvas.'

He argued the case for a recognised Indigenous elder appointed as our head of state, which already would come anchored in a long history and a culture brimming with ceremony.

'One of the great things about some Indigenous ceremonies like Welcome to country, is they're often informal,' Aly continued.

'This extraordinary mix of ceremony and informality capture something unique and charming about the Australian character.'

'We could even call our elder Uncle or Aunty and when our Aunty dies, deep rituals of mourning would already exist, ready for us to embrace as a nation.

What a stupid dream! None of them could even organise a root in a brothel! Every time you put them in a position of responsibility it fails! Look at ATSIC! They can't cope in a technologically advanced nation like Australia, that's why they are over represented in Gaol and they get extra rights and benefits! They complain their caveman ways are of no value any more and they are too dumb to pick up the pace!

The Coniston Massacre was the last documented massacre of First Nations people in Australia. Over 60 First Nations people were killed throughout the Central Desert region, leaving a traumatic mark on the lives of many.

Abos claim White trapper Fred Brooks raped one of these creatures

The massacre occurred after a white dingo trapper, Fred Brooks, was found murdered on Coniston Station in 1928. Brooks' body was found with traditional weapons in a shallow grave.

After his death, a reprisal party was formed and led on horseback by Mounted Constable George Murray. The party was made up of both civilians and police.

Over a period of several months over 60 Aboriginal women, men, and children were killed at different sites. These events became known as the Coniston Massacre

Two Warlpiri men, Arkikra and Padygar, were arrested for the murder of Brookes. They were held in Darwin before being acquitted (found not guilty). There are many accounts by Aboriginal eye-witnesses that point to Kamalyarrpa Japanangka, also known as 'Bullfrog', as the true killer of Brooks.

In 1928, scarcity of resources like food and water had led  to tensions between settlers and Aboriginal people across the Central Australian region. Accounts from 1928 highlight that Brooks was killed due to breaching Warlpiri marriage law. Brooks had been living at a waterhole called Yurrkuru, on Coniston station near a group of Warlpiri people, including Bullfrog

While Brooks did not have an Aboriginal wife, many first-person accounts highlight that he placed demands on Bullfrog's wives, and secondary accounts suggest he may have sexually assaulted one of his wives.

Marriage law was governed by Aboriginal law during this time, and breaking that law was a punishable offence. The violence that erupted at Coniston highlights the cultural misunderstandings that often created conflict throughout early colonisation. According to Warlpiri law, Bullfrog acted lawfully in exercising his traditional Aboriginal marriage law. But the consequences of the reprisal massacre were devastating for Aboriginal people across the region. Warlpiri, Anmatyerre, and Kaytetye people mourn the loss of family who were killed during the Coniston Massacre.

The events of Coniston highlight the breakdown in British law during this time period. Settlers acted outside their law when the killings took place, rather than allowing Bullfrog to be brought to trial (even in a western context).

No one was charged for the more than 60 murders, and a board of enquiry that was set up to investigate ruled that the reprisal party had "acted in self defence".

The memories of Coniston are still fresh for Aboriginal people across the Central Australian region. On Friday the 24th of August, people from all over the Northern Territory meet at Yurrkuru, Brooks Soak, 60kms east of Yuendumu to recognise and mourn the loss of loved ones that were killed during 1928.


The Boong Bullfrog probably whore'd out his Gins/women - a common occurrence with Abo men - and then there was a drunken fight over payment or about the Boong's treatment of their own women. If either is the case, it makes the White - Fred Brooks - to be a race traitor. At least that'd be the case IF Brooks wasn't murdered because he rejected the Bong Gin. We will never know the truth, but what we do know is that Boongs lie; the only lesson the Downunder Aboriginal race learned over 200 years was to lie and always claim to be the victim - no matter what the circumstance. "BLAME WHITEY!"
