Police warn of potential safety risk when removing 'It's okay to be white' signs in Adelaide

POLICE have asked the public to exercise care if removing posters around Adelaide carrying the white supremacist message "It's okay to be white" — after uncorroborated reports of razor blades being hidden underneath them.

Excerpt: POLICE are investigating the placement of several signs bearing neo-Nazi-linked slogans, warning the public to be careful if removing them.

An SA Police spokesperson said there were uncorroborated reports on social media suggesting razor blades were being affixed under the "It's okay to be white" posters to hamper removal.

The Advertiser has been told Flinders University staff and students were also warned of the potential danger, and to report them to police rather than attempt removal.

"SAPOL is investigating the motivation and intent of the persons posting the signs," an SA Police spokesperson said.

"When the person/s responsible for posting the signs are identified and located they can be issued with a $315 fine plus $60 victims of crime levy for the offence of post bill without consent under section 23(1) of the Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016."

They added that more serious offences would be considered if the posters are found to be dangerous.

Anyone who witnesses them being posted should notify SA Police on 131 444.



Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young notified police after seeing a poster near her electorate office on Thursday.

On Twitter, Ms Hanson-Young said such "pro-Nazi slogans" weren't welcome in Adelaide.

"This white supremacist slogan has no place in Adelaide and no place in 2018," she told The Advertiser.

Ms Hanson-Young said thewhite supremacist slogan was a direct attack on the state's welcoming, multicultural community.

"I have referred this vile racism to the police," she said.

The incident comes after controversial Queensland MP Pauline Hanson mounted an attempt to move a motion to have the Senate acknowledge that "it's OK to be white".

The motion was defeated 31-28 by opponents who called it a racist slogan from the white supremacist movement.



South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission chair (((Norman Schueler))) said, "The slogan has become popular among white nationalists intent on creating racial divisions and recruiting people to a mindset that our culture is under imminent threat from minority groups," Mr Schueler said.
