All white on the night: when MasterChef hit the 'bamboo ceiling', this Asian-Australian stopped watching

I didn't watch the MasterChef finale this week. I had felt pointlessly possessive over who might win that trophy for months, and then it suddenly didn't matter who won because my Asian team had already lost.

MasterChef is all you've really got if you're looking for Asian-Australian faces on TV. Which is why it hurt so much when Reynold Poernomo, the only Asian-Australian to make the top five, was eliminated from the competition, making the finale a showdown between two white chefs, Emelia Jackson and Laura Sharrad.

I have a love-hate relationship with MasterChef. On one hand, it is a showcase of Asian-Australian excellence and culture; watching Reynold using the plate as his canvas and Poh Ling Yeow charming the camera and listening to Melissa Leong's poetic critiques are a welcome change from the overwhelming whiteness of other network TV shows in Australia.

On the other hand, at times it felt as if the odds were stacked impossibly high against MasterChef's Asian-Australian contestants this season.

Professional cooking, food criticism and food culture is still an industry that privileges European cuisine over other cultures' food and the attitudes of the industry were clear in this year's MasterChef competition. This became apparent when, in a "fine dining" around the world challenge, Khanh Ong was eliminated after being the only contestant who chose not to cook a French dish. (He wanted to show the judges that Vietnamese food can be fine dining.)

The message from the judges was clear: Vietnamese food may be delicious but French cuisine is still symbolic of high culture in a way that Asian food is not.

Asian-Australian contestants have made up the bulk of the winners and are the largest minority group represented in previous MasterChef seasons. But almost all of the professional chefs who appeared as guests for this season's "pressure tests" (whose dishes contestants had to replicate) were white.

This hierarchy is true of Australia's "bamboo ceiling". While Asian-Australians form large parts of the workforce in many industries, including food, the leaders, upper management and chief executives are almost all white.

While I was disappointed to watch some of my favourite Asian-Australian competitors leave the competition (Reynold is a genius), I believe MasterChef unintentionally showed Australia its "real face" to itself.

MasterChef: Back to Win was effectively rigged because professional cooking and food culture are an uneven playing field for people of colour and, in this sense, television mirrored our disappointing reality.

One of Australia's oldest and most controversial brand names is about to disappear from supermarket shelves, with Coon cheese getting a makeover.

The brand's new Canadian owner, multinational conglomerate Saputo, confirmed on Friday it had decided to retire the brand name after complaints of racism.

"One of our basic principles as an organisation is to treat people with respect and without discrimination and we will not condone behaviour that goes against this," the company said in a statement.

"After thorough consideration, Saputo has decided to retire the Coon brand name."

Saputo said the decision came after "a careful and diligent review of a sensitive situation".

News Corp reported on Friday that the change came after Indigenous activist Stephen Hagan complained to the company. Dr Hagan – who also led the fight to dump the offensive N—er Brown name for a Toowoomba grandstand in 2003 – has campaigned against the Coon name for two decades. ... as well as complaining about Short Black coffee in MacDonalds.

A black woman co-conut is copping a torrent of racist and sexist abuse on social media after bringing coronavirus to Queensland

Diana Lasu, 21, Olivia Winnie Muranga, 19, and Haja Timbo, 21, are accused of lying on their border declarations about where they had been when they arrived in Brisbane from Melbourne via Sydney on July 21

Days later they felt sick but carried on working, socialising and visiting restaurants and cocktail bars while waiting for their test results - which came back positive.

As Lasu faces criminal charges of fraud and deception the 21-year-old is also enduring personal attacks on all fronts including disgusting insults on Instagram. 

An account under Lasu's name has been sharing some of the comments streaming in from complete strangers including death threats and attacks over the colour of her skin
'Black lives matter, but not yours,' one comments reads. 

'You dumb, ugly sl**. Way to f*** it up for Queensland. Everyone hates you, do everyone a favour and drink some bleach,' another reads.

'Hope you get deported to where you came from.'

Some devolve into racist name-calling and attacks on her physical appearance including references to potential cosmetic surgery she may have received.

'Looks like your botox injection penetrated into your tiny brain.

The stream of abuse was in the form of more than 20 messages posted over a period of 24 hours. Daily Mail Australia has contacted Lasu for comment.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll condemned the public behaviour surrounding the women during a media  briefing on Friday morning.

'We have seen community members making comments about certain cultural groups and ethnicities. This is not productive at all,' she said

'People doing the wrong thing come from all walks of life, backgrounds and community groups.

'So it is important especially in these times that community groups actually come together rather than fracture.'

Meanwhile the third woman who was said to be travelling with the pair was identified earlier on Friday as  21-year-old Haja Timbo.

Timbo was the first to speak publicly after being identified as the third woman involved in the alleged COVID-19 health breach.

She denied media reports surrounding the incident but wouldn't clarify what actually happened

'No, but half of the things that are in the media aren't true, so what can you do,' she told the Courier Mail.

'I want everything to be confidential. I don't want to be in the media or my friends to be in the media.'

The trio have been charged with one count each of providing false or misleading documents and fraud over their alleged lies to authorities when they arrived in Brisbane
