Counter terrorism investigators have charged a New South Wales man for allegedly making a number of "concerning" right-wing extremist posts online.

As part of ongoing investigations into extremist activity on the internet, an operation late yesterday saw a 43-year-old man arrested in Newcastle.

The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team became aware of "a number of concerning posts with right-wing extremist views on social media" earlier this week, police allege

At 5.10pm, officers from Newcastle Police District and Police Transport Command, assisted by specialist officers from Tactical Operations Regional Support, arrested the man near Cleary and Beaumont Streets in Hamilton.

"Following a search of the man and his backpack, police seized a mobile phone, which will undergo forensic examination," a spokesperson said

The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station for questioning and subsequently charged with use carriage service to menace/harass/offend.

He was refused bail and was due to appear in local court today.

Police have urged anyone with information about extremist activity or possible threats to the community to come forward, no matter how small or insignificant you may think the information may be. The National Security Hotline is 1800 123 400.

People who brawl in or around pubs and bars in Canberra could soon be banned from licensed venues in the city, under proposed laws targeting bikies

The legislation would also allow police to stop criminals from getting a liquor licence or working as a licensed builder, in a bid to protect those industries from organised crime.

The crackdown coincides with a surge of inter-gang violence in the national capital in recent years as rival bikies — in particular Nomads and Comancheros — battled for supremacy.

The turf wars occasionally involved shootings, fire-bombings and brawls in Canberra's relatively quiet suburbs.

ACT Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said the proposed laws would affect bikies as well as other organised crime groups.

"Outlaw motorcycle gangs are one of the most high-profile manifestations of organised crime, with an active presence in all Australian states and territories," he said.

"They see themselves as the 'one percenters' who operate outside the law.

"It is important that the ACT has strong and effective measures in place to target these people and subject them to the justice system."

'Broad' powers to disrupt organised crime

The bill introduces new offences of "serious affray" designed to disrupt criminal gangs but which could be applied more broadly.

It allows the chief police officer to apply for a court order that excludes a person from entering, or even trying to enter, a range of licenced premises, at the court's discretion.

Offenders who breach the order will face a fine of up to $16,000 and/or a year in prison

Mr Ramsay said the legislation would also tighten eligibility for liquor and construction licences, allowing authorities to deny applications from "people who are involved in criminal activity, such as organised crime".

This would include licences to work in most building trades — for example, as a surveyor, plumber or electrician.

Organised criminals have allegedly become increasingly influential in the construction industry over the past decade, with the Federal Government using the link to justify the re-establishment of the Australian Building and Construction Commission.

Tough, but 'human rights-compliant'

The police union and the Canberra Liberals have strongly criticised the lack of anti-consorting laws in the ACT, which are used in neighbouring New South Wales to prevent bikie gang members from associating with each other.

Earlier this year, Australian Federal Police Association president Angela Smith said the capital's different approach had created "an outlaw motorcycle gang haven that is detrimental to Canberra being a safe city

However, civil libertarians and the Australian Human Rights Commission have urged NSW, as well as Queensland and South Australia, to amend their anti-bikie laws, saying they unjustifiably limit freedom of association and assembly.

Mr Ramsay said the ACT Government would not resort to legislation that breached human rights.

"That is not the values of the Canberra people, that is not the way this government works."

He said evidence emerging from other states showed it was "very clear" that anti-consorting laws were ineffective.

"We will target organised crime and we will do that in a way that is effective and human-rights compliant."

Meanwhile, shadow ACT attorney-general Jeremy Hanson said the Opposition would back legislation that made life harder for organised criminal groups.

"But the reality is that, without anti-consorting laws in this jurisdiction ... this myriad of laws they're coming forward with is like putting more bolts and locks on your front door while you're holding your back door open," he said.

A senior member of a neo-Nazi website linked to violent extremist groups is a Northern Territory man who has bragged about being on a "terror watch list". Steve Braddy, 25, left Australia after being raided by authorities amid claims he tried to obtain radioactive ­material.

He was chosen in 2015 to be among the "Black Corps" leadership group of the Iron March website, which gave rise to the violent US Atomwaffen Division and Australia's neo-Nazi Antidopean Resistance. Private messages and other details from the fascist forum, which went offline in 2017, were leaked last week. Mr Braddy's details and private messages were found among those files, along with those of other Australians.

The Australian has confirmed he came to the attention of Northern Territory police and his home was searched by the AFP before he left the country in 2016. Other details about Mr Braddy have been confirmed by a person known to him who was unaware of his involvement in the far-right website. As well as the leaked messages and membership details, more than 1200 posts from his Iron March account prior to him being "gassed" — banned — from the forum have also been found. Mr Braddy is now believed to be living in Europe and is said to be married.

He did not respond to emails, Facebook messages and requests for comment on two of his Skype accounts. But in late 2016, a post from Mr Braddy's account said he was in Bulgaria after police executed a search warrant — which he claimed referred to "uranium and radium" — at his house:

"So about two weeks ago feds broke into my house (Australian Federal Police — not ASIO for a change), with a warrant this time," the post said. "Seized all my PCs and a bunch of other things. They took photos of my portrait of Hitler and my flags and the look on the pigs' faces was hilarious when they found my box of knives, books and racist pamphlets for putting on cars and letterboxes and the like. Classic."

In a later message, he said he had gone to Serbia, which he claimed "has no extradition laws with Australia".

A far-right extremist has yelled at a jury after being found guilty of plotting terror attacks in Melbourne, claiming they didn't have "all the facts".
Phillip Galea was found guilty of planning attacks on "left-wing" targets in Victoria including the Trades Hall and others between August 2015 and 2016.

"You weren't given all the facts," the convicted terror plotter called out as jury members were being taken from the courtroom on Thursday

The 35-year-old equated the "left wing" with Muslims and held the former responsible for the "Islamisation of Australia", the Supreme Court jury was told during the trial.

He aimed to target the city's anarchist club, the Melbourne Resistance Centre along with Trades Hall to "eliminate leaders of the left".
Galea had looked up maps and the clubs' addresses, prosecutors argued.

He was also convicted of creating a document "likely to facilitate" a terrorist act, which he labelled the "Patriot's Cookbook

The Braybrook man took the stand during the seven-week trial and claimed the first version of the guide was meant to be a a Monty Python-esque satire.

He had also been connected to the far-right group Reclaim Australia and had previously spoken about targeting left-wing activists at a rally with "chemical bombs".

Galea's defence claimed his terror plot was actually a "fake plan" to expose a police mole.

"He put together a fake plan which would expose the police informer he believed to be acting against right-wing groups," barrister Felicity Gerry QC said of the allegations.

He believed police had planted an informer in right-wing groups as "part of a left-wing political objective against the right", she said during the trial.

There were also claims aired in court that Galea wanted to cut throats, inject people with acid and target police with snake venom.

Arson and explosives experts raided Galea's home in November 2015 and seized five cattle prods and 362.1 grams of mercury.

Computer equipment was also seized, and police said Galea researched homemade bombs, ballistic armour and guns.

Galea described himself as a self-taught electrical engineer who was using the mercury to replicate an engine originally created by 19th century English scientist Michael Faraday.

The jury began deliberations on Monday afternoon and returned the guilty verdicts on Thursday.

He will appear for a pre-sentence hearing in March next year
