Foreigners who commit violent crimes against women or children will be kicked out of Australia or barred from entering the country as part of a tough government directive

Officials will now be able to cancel the visas of those who have been found guilty of domestic violence after the order by Immigration Minister David Coleman came into force on Thursday.

Previously, foreign visa-holders could only have their visas revoked if they had been in jail for at least 12 months or failed a character test.

The new policy within the Department for Immigration come after an Administrative Appeals Tribunal overturned denying a Danish man a visa to enter the country.

His suspended sentence in Denmark of 30 days in jail did not warrant being denied entry to Australia under previous legislation.

But the tribunal would now longer be able to overturn such cases, The Herald Sun reported, despite the convicted person not having serving time in jail.

The laws come into place after Mr Coleman said last year the serious nature of domestic abuse crimes should be recognised in legislation.

'Entering or remaining in Australia is a privilege and it is expected that non-citizens are, and have been, law-abiding,' Mr Coleman said.

'These crimes can inflict long lasting trauma on the victims and their friends and family


The new directive comes after a government committee recommended victims of foreign criminals should be able to give evidence when a non-citizen appeals against their visa being cancelled.

The recommendations would mean more consideration would be given to the impact offending has on the victim as opposed to the character of the offender.

A man who allegedly played a role in importing ice worth $106million into Australia has fallen off the police radar - despite wearing an electronic monitoring device
Xu Lin, 29, was one of four people arrested in January 2016 for allegedly trying to import methamphetamine and its drug precursor ephedrine into Australia.

Australian Federal Police discovered the drugs, which were hidden in bar stools and small packets of soup mix, in three freight containers that arrived from China.

Lin was arrested at Narwee, in Sydney's southwest, on January 21, 2016, and charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug.

He was subsequently bailed under very strict conditions, which included wearing an electronic monitoring device, with a surety of more than $1million.

As part of his bail conditions, he was supposed to report to Campsie Police Station, but vanished between May 6 and May 15, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The device Lin was wearing is designed to send a message to a central monitoring system if its wearer commits a violation, which then notifies relevant authorities

Six men have sexually assaulted a woman and punched another in the face in Melbourne's CBD during a spate of robberies.

The women had been on Queen Street before 4am on Saturday when six men stole their portable audio speaker and tobacco before attacking the pair, Victoria Police said.

The offenders, including a teenager of African-appearance wearing a Balenciaga T-shirt, fled after the attack, police said.

But that wasn't the start of the gang's escapades.

Five men approached a stranger on Swanston Street about 8.45pm on Friday and unsuccessfully tried to steal his phone and wallet, before running away.

The offenders tried their luck a second time, stealing tobacco and attempting to take a mobile phone from two people on Banana Alley after midnight on Saturday.

The group fled, with the victims chasing the offenders before being assaulted.

The pursuers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At least two of the offenders may have been involved in a fourth robbery outside a Southbank restaurant about 7am on Saturday when two people had their phones stolen.

One of the victims was head-butted and suffered a minor injury.

Two men have been arrested and are assisting police with inquiries.

Witnesses watched on in horror as hundreds of riot squad officers were forced to use capsicum spray and batons to break up a series of organised brawls across the city.

One man likened the scenes to 'something out of Braveheart', claiming officers could do little but watch on as the clashing groups fought outside Flinders Street Station.

'I saw about 5 massive clashes, with the Islanders coming out on top in all of them. Pound for Pound they were formidable and unstoppable,' he wrote online.

'They would charge at each other randomly. Like something out of Braveheart

Dramatic footage posted online showed more than a dozen teenagers sprinting down a set of escalators at Flinders Street station.

They appeared to corner a smaller group of boys and lay into them with flying kicks and punches as others encouraged them on from a distance.

Police arrested five people following three separate incidents, which they believe were all linked.

The organised street brawls started from 10pm and carried through until 2am on Sunday night, police confirmed.

The brawls followed Melbourne's notorious Moomba Festival, a three-day free family event run by the council
Moomba Festival has been spoiled by youth gang violence for the past four years.

Police arrested 24 people in 2016, and more than 50 in 2017 when young thugs from the Apex gang ran riot through the city centre.

Saturday night's violent incidents came despite Victoria Police pre-empting trouble surrounding the family-friendly event, promising a dedicated police presence throughout the city. 

In other footage taken next to Flinders Street Station by a passer-by, a young woman could be seen being allegedly thrown to the ground by an officer after she had walked up to him.

Braxton, 15, who filmed the fight, said officers had blocked off a platform because of a fight when the woman went up and tried to negotiate with them.

'She tried to get past them because she kept saying she was in a rush to catch her train, it was real late,' he said
'She kept trying to get past him, that's when he threw her towards a wall.'

'Her face was all bruised and beaten , she had a bruise on the right of her lip straight away.'

Braxton's mother Tash Wahlert said the incident left her doubting whether her children could have faith in the authorities.

'My son's 15 and my daughter's nearly 12, if they can't trust police then what?' she said.

'If that was my daughter, oh my god.'

In response, Victoria Police said the incident showed the need for 'members of the public to stand back to give police the space to ensure a safe and timely outcome for all parties'.

The incident will however be investigated, a spokesperson confirmed

Vision also showed a young woman who appeared to have been affected by capscium spray being attended by officers.

'On each occasion two groups of youths began fighting before Public Order Response Team and Uniform police immediately intervened,' a police spokesperson said.

Three people were arrested for assault over the course of the night, and two others for drunken behaviour.

A further two penalty notices were also issued, one for riotous behaviour and one for weapons offences

Last year African gang violence ruined the Moomba for the third year in a row - which included dozens of teenagers being caught on camera charging onto a tram with police in hot pursuit.

Footage filmed during the 2018 festival showed girls trading punches while frightened visitors ducked for cover.

But police said there were only a small number of incidents and their operation was successful.
