A Sydney man has been caught making $1 million in counterfeit $50 notes, despite Australia boasting it has one of the lowest rates of counterfeiting in the world.

Benjamin Gillette-Rothschild, 34, pleaded guilty in the Downing Centre District Court, The Daily Telegraph reports.

How he made the fake notes remains a secret due to the court order, but he boasted the process was so easy he did it all from the comfort of a leather chair.

Only $850,000 of the fake $1 million has been recovered

Gillette-Rothschild allegedly used 'fake names' to buy three commercial printers for $80,000, ink, and specialised plastic.

He pleaded guilty to eight charges of making counterfeit money, and was sentenced in February.

The Australian Federal Police arrested him in September 2016, while raiding a house in New South Wales.

According to court documents, he asked four international people to 'get change at retail stores' for $100,000 worth of counterfeit notes, according to the,The Daily Telegraph.

The other man was given a suspended jail sentence in 2017.

The Reserve Bank of Australia, on its website, boasts Australia has one of the lowest rates of counterfeiting in the world.

'Most people will never see a counterfeit, the website stated.'

'Even so, it is important to be aware of the security features included on Australia's banknotes so you can protect yourself against accepting a counterfeit. It is important to note that counterfeits have no value.'

About $850,000 of the fake money has reportedly been recovered.

A Turkish immigrant who brutally stabbed an Australian couple to death committed the gruesome murders after decisions to keep him out of the country were overturned by bureaucrats.

Mustafa Kunduraci admitted to stabbing Korinne Aylward, 35, and her long-term partner Greg Tucker, 54, at their Melbourne home in 2013.

Mr Tucker's three children, then aged one, three and five were sleeping at the home during the frenzied knife attack.

The killer was due to be deported in 2007 after previously being banned from entering Australia, but both decisions were reversed by the predecessor to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

'If they hadn't overturned the decisions, the kids would still have parents,' Ms Aylward's sister Maria told the Herald Sun on Sunday.

Kunduraci was banned by the Immigration Department from entering Australia in 1995, but an appeal was upheld by what was then the Immigration Review Tribunal.

He was then allowed to stay in the country after wedding an Australian woman in a short-lived marriage in 1996.

In 2007, he was due to be deported after applying for a second spousal visa, but the Migration Review Tribunal [MRT] overturned the decision.

Former MRT member Peter Katsambanis, who granted Kunduraci a spouse visa that year, said his 'heart goes out' to the victims' families.   

'Nothing we say or do now can adequately compensate them for their loss and suffering,' he told the paper.

'All tribunal members are bound to apply the law as it stands at the time of making a decision on a matter before them.'

Three years after the visa was granted, Kunduraci attacked and threatened to kill his former partner, hitting her several times with a belt and kicking her.

He was sentenced to six months jail, suspended for 12 months. 

The former Turkish soldier turned plasterer later stabbed Ms Aylward and Mr Tucker as three children slept nearby after a bitter dispute over a house renovation.

The couple had fought with Kunduraci after Mr Tucker said his plastering work was sloppy, while Kunduraci claimed the couple owed him thousands of dollars.

On the night of December 8, 2013 he entered their Moonee Ponds home uninvited, armed with a knife and an imitation pistol, carrying a backpack that held cable ties and duct tape.

He first killed Ms Aylward then stabbed Mr Tucker to death when he came to her rescue.

'You gave no quarter to either of the deceased from the moment you entered their home. Your actions orphaned three children,' Justice Dixon said during sentencing.

Justice Jane Dixon said Kunduraci would have been jailed for life if he hadn't pleaded guilty.

Maria Aylward previously spoke to Daily Mail Australia about her constant nightmares – and the fears of the two young boys who still have vivid memories of the night their mother and father were killed.

'I don't think we will ever know what the boys saw or heard – but they said their ''mummy screamed a lot'' and ''daddy had red chewing gum in his mouth'' when he died,' she said.

'They also said "the bad man pushed mummy down the stairs" and there was a dent at the bottom.

'The hardest thing for me is when they fall over and still call out for their mum.' 

Kunduraci will be eligible for parole in 2043.

POLICE say they are closing in on the youths who jumped on their cars and pelted police with objects when a party turned violent in North Melbourne.

Detectives have forensic evidence from the damaged cars and from inside the trashed holiday home where a group of African teens had been partying until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Senior-Sergeant Adam Tanner said police had made good headway as they worked to identify who of the 40 to 50 youths had been responsible for attacking police cars and damaging the Shands Lane home.

"There's been no arrests to date but I'm confident," Sen-Sgt Tanner said.

"Our avenues of enquiry are coming along well."

Police are investigating whether a stolen credit card or false ID were used to book the holiday home where partygoers showered police cars with firewood.

Police were breaking up a noisy gathering early Saturday when they were forced to take refuge as teens threw rubbish bins and logs, and stomped on the bonnets of police vehicles.

Up to 50 young people, described as African males and females, had been at the four-star flat, which was left with thousands of dollars' worth of damage.

Furniture was upturned and walls smashed, and police said a microwave oven and TV set had been stolen.

Sen-Sgt Adam Tanner said the behaviour was ­"outrageous".

"It's criminal. It's not something that we tolerate," he said.

"To put it bluntly, it makes me angry and I think it makes a lot of people angry."

He said when police arrived about 2am, the youths in the home were compliant and agreed to leave.

The party dispersed, but when they returned to their cars, police found four with smashed windows, dented bonnets and broken mirrors.

The last remaining revellers jumped the back fences of homes and fled the street about 8am, neighbours said.

Parents told the Herald Sun they woke to the sounds of banging and shouting.

A father-of-two said he saw up to 20 youths running across the tops of police cars and became concerned for the safety of his family

"They were running down the street and jumping on the cars," he said.

Resident Meg Moorhouse said the party had quickly turned violent.

"It was aggressive," she said. "They were drinking in the alley. They left broken bottles and were yelling."

Police were working with the booking site yesterday to identify how the Shands Lane property was booked.

The $460 per night four-star rental is advertised as being strictly for bookings by people over 18 and the owners have banned parties at the townhouse.

But up to 50 young people were at the house about 2am, prompting noise complaints from neighbours.

Sen-Sgt Tanner said police could not identify those responsible at the time because the youths had quickly left the scene.

The youths were described as Sudanese in appearance by neighbours.

The neighbour who alerted police to the out-of-control party said he saw a few youths loitering in the alleyway.

"Then I noticed about two dozen in the house. My wife asked me to call police to make a noise complaint," he said.

"The cops came and kicked them out. There was a lot of banging and loud music.

"I was pretty concerned to hear they had smashed up police cars.

Another neighbour who witnessed the carnage said it was "full on".

"They were kicking and jumping on the police cars. They left everyone else's cars alone."

Neighbours say it's the second out-of-control party to have been hosted at the rental property over the past fortnight and they called on the owner to take responsibility.

Piles of rubbish have been left outside the rental property currently being looked at by police.

Broken glass can be seen lying on the street.

Police are urging residents to hand in CCTV as they work to identify the culprits.

Shands Lane is a narrow laneway off Canning St, comprising mainly of modern townhouses.

Short-stay house rental websites also advertise for the "premium" two-bedroom holiday apartment in the street.

Two young refugees from Myanmar have pleaded guilty to raping a woman who was sleeping rough under a bridge in Melbourne's southwest.

Thwang Za Lian, 24, and Kapling Hlawnceu, 21, found the woman under a Werribee footbridge before they held her down, covered her mouth and raped her one night in August 2017, a court heard.

The two men are both Christian refugees who fled to Australia with family because of persecution by the Buddhist majority.

They may be deported after their release from jail, but face the possibility of being held in a detention camp because they cannot return to Myanmar.

The attack was reported and police arrived a short time later, subsequently circulating a description of the suspects to colleagues.

Hlawnceu and Za Lian were spotted walking out of nearby parkland and were arrested.

A police dog tracked down a used condom bearing DNA evidence.

The victim said she felt her life had been in a 'holding pattern' of fear, anxiety and mistrust since the rape.

'For three months after this happened I hid from the world, from my friends,' she told the court via video link.

'I am wary and distrusting of people of Asian appearance and I feel bad about that but I can't help how I feel.

'I did not deserve for this to happen to me. It was not my fault.'

The judge heard Hlawnceu and Za Lian are childhood friends from the same village in Myanmar.

A FEMALE pedestrian has been killed in an alleged hit and run involving a taxi in Darwin city overnight.

The 55-year-old woman was struck on Smith St in the CBD just after midnight.

Sergeant Mark Casey from NT Police's major crash investigation unit said police quickly identified the taxi involved at the airport this morning.

"A 64-year-old male driver has been arrested and is helping police with the investigation into the incident," he said.

"Police have done a breath test on the driver which indicated there was no alcohol involved.

"The taxi was travelling from Daly St towards the Smith St mall area and it seems as though the woman may have been laying on the road when she was hit."

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said they received at triple-0 call from a witness at about 12.10am when the woman was hit.

"A witness called and said the patient had gone into cardiac arrest and was give directions to preform CPR over the phone until paramedics arrived," he said.

"The woman's injuries were quite traumatic and severe.

"She was declared deceased by St John crews shortly after they arrived."
