A REMAND prisoner "desperate" to not go back to jail started a punch-up on a police air wing flight and later seriously injured himself after leaping from a paddy wagon at 80km/h.

Patrick Cumaiyi yesterday pleaded guilty in the NT Supreme Court to endangering the safety of an aircraft, as well as property damage and escaping lawful custody charges stemming from his leap-to-freedom gone awry.

Supreme Court Justice Judith Kelly said the circumstances of the aircraft charge were unusual.

She said people charged with endangering an aircraft had often committed "essentially a nuisance offence on large aircraft", sometimes while drunk and "fiddling with exit doors that they couldn't possibly open".

"This was a tiny little aircraft and he was struggling, kicking and attempting to bite two officers ... a matter of feet from where the pilots were ..."

The court heard the nine-seater plane was moving down the runway at Wadeye, at full throttle, when another prisoner started unclipping his seatbelt.

Cumaiyi then unbuckled his seatbelt and said to a distracted police officer, Constable Andrew Bravos: "You want to fight me Andrew? F*ck you."

Despite being in restraints, Cumaiyi tried to throw punches at Constable Bravos and ignored commands to sit down.
Constable Bravos delivered a series of lawful punches – which police call "closed fist clearance strikes" – to Cumaiyi's head and ribs, as he thrashed around, resisting the two officers on board while the plane taxied down the runway.

The pilot abandoned the take off and Cumaiyi was sent back to the watchhouse to instead be driven to Darwin down what defence lawyer Marty Aust described as the "dusty, corrugated" Port Keats Rd.

Cumaiyi's 80km/h escape from the paddy wagon, after kicking the roof off, was short lived and a trailing paddy wagon spotted Cumaiyi on the side of the road.

Mr Aust said the property damage charge was limited to "a few pop rivets". "He broke facial bones, or at least a facial bone," he said. "Rather than being petulant, this is just a desperate ... response to being once again in chains."

Justice Kelly will sentence Cumaiyi on Monday.

A four-year-old boy from the community of Ali Curung, 170km southeast of Tennant Creek, has been taken to Alice Springs for medical care after he was allegedly sexually assaulted on Sunday evening.

It is understood a 17-year-old is being held after the incident allegedly occurred behind the community's Baptist Church.

Northern Territory police told News Corp Australia in a statement: "Police from the Northern Territory Child Abuse Taskforce are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a child in a remote Northern Territory community.


The latest allegation comes just a month after the alleged rape of a two-year-old girl in Tennant Creek.
"A youth is currently in custody and is assisting police with their inquiries. No one else is being sought in relation to this matter at this time."

It follows the mid-February case of a two-year-old girl who was allegedly raped in Tennant Creek by a 24-year-old relative, who has been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse. In that case, the child was flown to Adelaide for medical care.

NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner said in a statement: "I'm aware of an alleged sexual assault of a child in Ali Curung. This is an extremely disturbing incident. Every child, no matter where they live, deserves to be in a safe environment."


He said the matter would be referred to the Children's Commissioner and that additional staff from Territory Families had been deployed to the community.

The head of Territory Families, Ken Davies, said his department was trying to find out what happened to the boy.


"I can't say anything really expect we've got a team on the ground working with police," Mr Davies said. "We have a Territory Families officer there and we're there with police. We know the families fairly well.

"We're trying to ascertain how serious it is. We'll certainly be working closely with police."

A GANG of youths has gone on a terrifying rampage in the southern suburbs, savagely attacking residents with a garden stake, damaging cars and throwing rocks at vehicles on the Southern Expressway.

Extract: Witnesses have told how the group relentlessly beat a couple, leaving one victim "covered in blood from head to toe".

The gang assaulted a wheelchair-bound woman and a man, both in their 60s, at their home.

Shortly afterwards the gang threw rocks at cars from a footbridge over the Southern Expressway before they assaulted a wheelchair-bound woman and a man, both in their 60s, at their home.

The first incident occurred just after 11.45pm on Saturday with police receiving reports of a fight in Columba St, Morphett Vale.

Police say a male motorist had been driving along the street when rocks were thrown at his car.

When he stopped and approached the youths, believed to be four boys and a girl, they assaulted him and damaged his car using sticks and rocks.

Andrew Craigie, 60, was at home when the youth walked past his house and "gave me a mouthful".

Mr Craigie said the group moved on but shortly after he heard an altercation.

"A ... car went past and (the driver's) yelling and screaming at them so I don't know what they've done to him," he said.

Mr Craigie said the motorist told him the youths had thrown rocks at his car.

He said the group turned on the driver further up the street.

"It just got out of hand," Mr Craigie said.

"(One of the youths) was trying to smash a window, trying to get (the driver) out and the girlfriend is going off.

"He just drove through the whole crowd and knocked one over."

ARMED robbers have assaulted a staff member and good Samaritan at a service station in Nightcliff in a brazen smash and grab on Wednesday.

The robbers fled the scene following the burglary at 6am and three men are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

A local man who didn't want to be named said the incident was the latest in a series of thefts from the same servo in an area where crime was at its worst in a decade.

The man said he had seen children as young as 10 stealing from the Shell earlier this week and staff had told him they felt "helpless to do anything about it".

"He said 'I talk to the cops, the cops they don't bother, I can't grab them because if I touch someone I'll lose my job' so they basically just have to stand there and watch people come and take stuff," he said.

A MANCoon has been arrested and charged in relation to a serious sexual assault of a woman in the Northern Territory.

Police will allege that around 11pm Saturday, a 28-year-old woman was walking near the North Stuart Highway, Alice Springs, with a male friend when they were stopped by a man in a vehicle.

The man, 31, got out of the vehicle and allegedly began physically assaulting the woman.

"The woman fell to the ground and the man has strangled her to the point of unconsciousness," Police allege.

"It is alleged the man then repeatedly stabbed the woman with a weapon before returning to his vehicle and driving off leaving the woman and her male acquaintance.

"The pair were able to flag down a passing motorist and contact police."

The woman was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Police arrested the man following a pursuit along Ilparpa Rd and have charged him with:

– 1 x Unlawfully cause Serious Harm

– 1 x Sexual Intercourse without consent

– 2 x Aggravated Assault

– 2 x Armed with an Offensive Weapon


– 1 x Drive Unlicenced

– 1 x Drive Unregistered Motor Vehicle

– 1 x Drive Uninsured Motor Vehicle

– 1 x Fail to Obey directions of Police

– 1 x Drive Dangerous Manner

He was also charged with several traffic offences.

A MOTHER whose son was brutally bashed by a gang of youths on Main South Rd has called on other parents and community leaders to attend an urgent meeting to curb violence in the area

Ms Farrell said there needed to be different ways to educate children, which also included Aboriginal elders working with young people.


"These kids, and it has been proven time and time again, have no respect for the uniform," she said.

"We need to come in at different angles and get the respect, and that has to be from the elders."

Mr Stevens said police were aware of the parties that occur in the area, but were not sure if they were "prevalent" enough to raise public concern.

The meeting is at Neporendi Aboriginal Forum, 7 Vine St, Old Reynella, on Thursday, April 5, from 7pm-8.30pm.
