KATHERINE police fought through the flames of a thick grass fire last year in a vain attempt to save an unconscious man burnt alive by his drunken relative.

Wayne Bidingal, 34, has pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter in the Supreme Court after setting fire to a patch of grass behind the United Service Station in Katherine on the night of October 12 last year, having earlier bickered with his victim over stolen grog.

Bidingal's victim, who the NT News has chosen not to name for cultural reasons, was one of two drinkers passed out in the grass.

The other, Graham Ashley, woke as the flames came near.

Bidingal also pleaded guilty to causing harm to Mr Ashley, who suffered minor burns.

The court heard Bidingal, of Gapuwiyak, had purchased two cartons of VB around lunchtime that day and spent the afternoon drinking on the outskirts of town, at one point becoming worked up after suspecting others of stealing his drinks.

That night, as the victim and Ashley lay sleeping in the patch of tall grass in town, a drunk Bidingal was heard saying "f*** off my grog, I'm going to burn this grass".

A fire Bidingal lit quickly grew out of control, and he briefly tried to stamp it out before walking away.

When police caught up to Bidingal, he was again drinking beer and denied lighting the fire. A post-mortem revealed the victim had a blood alcohol reading of 0.32.

The graffiti-covered stairs of Kendall Towers are where the drug addicts go to shoot up or smoke meth, and the overpowering stench only gets worse as we climb higher. "People who just want money, they hang around in the stairs and if someone wants sex, they go there," Marie, who has lived at the block in Sydney's Redfern for almost 40 years, explains.

"They're young kids, it's just so upsetting, young kids who want money. They'll do anything for it. They're usually taking some sort of drugs. They don't live here, they come here to work."

THREE of the teenagers originally charged with the manslaughter of motorist Lucy Paveley were released from custody on Tuesday — only to be dramatically re-arrested in front of their families.

Chaotic scenes erupted at the Youth Court as the boys, aged between 13 and 17, were handcuffed by seven armed SA Police officers and Operation Mandrake detectives.

The three had spent the previous 24 hours in custody, waiting to answer allegations they had killed Ms Paveley, 40, in a horror smash at Parafield on Sunday.

However, police dropped those charges just after 4.30pm and, as the trio emerged from the court's cells, arrested them for the second time.

Asked whether he had anything to say to Ms Paveley's family, one of the boys replied: "Nothing."

As they were led into vans, relatives yelled "he is not f---ing resisting".

The arrests are unusual, as the generally accepted practice is no arrests are usually made inside court buildings.

The only know exception to that rule was the arrest of Peter Falconio's killer, Bradley John Murdoch, inside the Supreme Court more than a decade ago.

SA Police Chief Inspector Matt Nairn, who supervised the operation, told the families the boys were "being charged with other offences".

"I just need everybody to calm down and take a breath. We will explain it to you in due time," he said.

"I'm not doing this in the public arena. It's unfortunate that it's come to this.

"I would prefer it in another arena, but this is it ... you do not need to escalate this."
When the 13-year-old's legal guardian questioned police, he too was handcuffed and accused of car theft, only to be released and apologised to.

Chief Inspector Nairn declined to comment to The Advertiser, saying he would "brief my senior officers".

In a statement last night, police announced the 15-year-old had been charged with car theft offences, while the 14-year-old and 13-year-old were accused of aggravated serious criminal trespass, theft and illegal use of a car.

Police said those charges "relate to the incidents that led to the fatal collision".

They will face the Youth Court again on Wednesday.


Lucy Paveley was killed when hoons in a stolen Pajero ran a red light and slammed into her car on Sunday morning.
Ms Paveley, a mother of two, died at Main North Rd, Parafield, on Sunday morning.

It was the third fatal crash involving youths in stolen cars in the past 18 months.

Ms Paveley had worked as an AnglicareSA care worker since 2013.

Her husband, Jamie, 38, is being supported by friends at their Mawson Lakes home.

A friend said he was "being well looked after" but was "very deeply hurt".

"It is so surreal for him," the friend told The Advertiser.

"He loved her so very much and their children will be growing up without their mother and it always will be big hole, which he will not be able to fill in."

Despite events at the Youth Court, two people did face charges over Ms Paveley's death.

Lyle Morrison, 18, of Pennington, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court.

He has yet to plead to charges of manslaughter, causing death by dangerous driving and aggravated driving without due care.

THE serial thug who attacked Wadeye nurse Vicki Myers in 2016 – his latest in a string of attacks on female nurses, teachers and service workers – has been jailed and will likely never again be allowed to live in town.

Edmund Tcherna was on Thursday sentenced to [just] two years and six months jail with no non-parole period over what Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Grant called the "disturbing assault" and a related property damage charge.

He said the attack demonstrated an escalation of Tcherna's pattern of unprovoked violence towards defenceless female service workers. [They're talking about White Women.]

"That sort of conduct is one of the reasons why it's so difficult to get service workers [White People] into communities such as yours," he said.

Tcherna, 37, has been in jail since shortly after he ran out the front door of his house and repeatedly punched Ms Myers in the face, where she had come to pick up one of Tcherna's relatives for treatment.

Tcherna has brain damage from petrol sniffing as a teenager, and told his court-appointed psychiatrist Dr Mrigenrda Das this year that he liked spending time in jail.

"He said that he liked the prison food and had a few fellow inmates with whom he enjoyed playing pool and cards," Dr Das said in a report.

Chief Justice Grant said Tcherna was "not altogether right in the head".

Travis Jackson, for Tcherna, said "given what's happened" with recent riots in Wadeye, Tcherna "has quite a lot of family" in what has become known as the "Port Keats wing" of Holtze prison.

Crown Prosecutor Steve Ledek said Chief Justice Grant could order Tcherna serve the rest of his jail time in Alice Springs prison, a suggestion the judge declined.

POLICE used special powers to shut the Nguiu Club on Bathurst Island on Thursday night after a man was knocked unconscious in a flare-up of grog-fuelled violence.

A police spokeswoman said officers had been told locals at the bar had been flouting the strict six-beer limit in place to prevent problem drinking.

The potential licence breaches have been referred to licensing authorities, but police believe the club licensee may not have been aware locals were drinking heavily at the club.

An email from Sergeant Renae McGarvie to club management, seen by the NT News, says she directed the club to stay closed on Friday after "alcohol-fuelled violence and community unrest" on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as "ongoing information" about excessive drinking.

The direction to halt trading was made under special "community unrest" provisions of the liquor license.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police will continue to conduct foot patrols and inspection of the licensed premises."

She said the man who was knocked unconscious did not pursue a criminal complaint.

The club is due to reopen today.

The club emerged from years of financial troubles last year after the Registrar of indigenous Corporations placed it under special administration.

POLICE are unsure what sparked an alleged violent outburst involving spears and machetes by a 29-year-old Groote Eylandt man.

The man, who late Sunday was still on the run from police, is alleged to have thrown a spear at a female Remote Jobs and Community Program worker before carrying on his rampage at another location and fleeing into the bush. The female was not injured.

The man has been on the run since Friday. Police have been working with the man's family but will intensify search efforts as early as today if he fails to hand himself in.

A police spokesman said the man was not known to police, had no known priors and was not the subject of monitoring.

"The man has turned up to the Remote Jobs and Community Program office with a spear," the spokesman said. "He smashed a car window and then headed inside where he threw a fire extinguisher before throwing the spear at a female worker which luckily missed her.

"He then left the building and armed himself with two machetes, going to the construction site of the new cultural centre where he smashed a car window.

"Workers on the construction site heard the noise and went to investigate. They confronted him but he was well-armed with the two machetes so they backed off."

No workers were injured in the second incident.

The NT News understands the Probuild workers have since been removed from Groote Eylandt by the company, however, it is unclear if this is linked to the incident.


"Police are working closely with the family in order to locate the man," the spokesman said.

"He fled into the bush after the second incident and that was on Friday.

"We are hoping he hands himself in but we will have to intensify search resources if he doesn't. We are unsure what has sparked this. He wasn't known to police. There were no alerts regarding him and it appears he has no priors."

In June, a man who killed another in a spear fight between rival clans on Groote was sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison.
