A YOUNG father who fled war torn Sudan and had begun rebuilding his life in Darwin has been jailed for killing two of his closest friends in a drunken car crash last year.

Aguto Majok Mach, 29, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court on Tuesday to two counts of dangerous driving causing death, after crashing into the side of a road train on Cox Peninsula Rd at Berry Springs in October 2016.

His two mates, Anyuat Deng and John Athtu, both of whom were passengers and both of whom had also been drinking, died of traumatic head injuries.

Mach, who was unlicensed and who broke his arm in the crash, had a blood alcohol reading of 0.142 when tested between one and three hours later in hospital.

Chief Justice Michael Grant said "common experience" suggested Mach's blood alcohol reading would have been higher at the time of the crash.

Crown Prosecutor Matt Nathan SC said the Mazda Metro was unregistered, uninsured and had bald tyres at the time of the crash

Christy McConnel, for Mach, said the accident happened after an evening of drinking, when one of the victims went to light up a cigarette in the car and Mach turned around, losing concentration on the road.

"He is sorry for what has happened, he instructs me that he has been in contact with the families of the victims," Ms McConnel said.

The court heard Mach came to Australia in 2006, and moved to Darwin in 2015 where he found skilled work at the Livingstone abattoir.

Chief Justice Grant said Mach had to do a "big whack" of jail time for his crimes.

A GANG of nine youths mobbed and attacked a man near the Casey ARC fitness centre in Narre Warren on Saturday just hours after 20 young people rampaged through the Coles Cranbourne, police have revealed.

And later that same night, a group of up to six young men approached a teenager and robbed him of his mobile phone as he left a bus near High St, Cranbourne, about 9.40pm.

Police cannot confirm the crimes are linked but say all three involved youths of African appearance.

The victim was approached and surrounded by the group, who demanded money and punched him in the face.

Earlier on Saturday a group of 15-20 youths entered Coles at Springhill Shopping Centre, shortly after 6pm.

The group went through and grabbed chips, soft drinks and confectionery leaving the store soon after without making any attempt to pay.

The teenagers are of African appearance and many were wearing hooded jumpers and backpacks.

Extract: SHOCKING CCTV footage has captured the moment a man sick of waiting for service at a suburban Melbourne bank set himself alight.

The vision was shown in a Melbourne court, where the alleged arsonist is facing multiple charges after allegedly starting the fire which destroyed the branch, and burned staff and customers.

Police allege Nur Islam, 22, poured petrol in the doorway of the Commonwealth Bank at Springvale on November 18 before lighting it, causing a large fire and creating "pandemonium" as customers and staff stampeded to escape, Melbourne Magistrates Court was told on Tuesday.

The court was told the bank was destroyed, causing up to $3 million damage.

It is alleged the "unlawful non-citizen" from Myanmar had intended to withdraw the balance of his account — $442 — but became angry at the length of time he had to wait.

Police claim he walked to a nearby service station, buying 11.33 litres of fuel for $14.71.

It is alleged he then returned to the bank, pouring the petrol in a trail from the ATMs into the bank's interior before retrieving a cigarette lighter from his pocket and igniting the fuel.
