Victoria's Premier has apologised to the state's Chinese community for the racism and unjust policies their ancestors endured during Australia's gold rush era.

Premier Daniel Andrews issued the apology to a crowd of Chinese community leaders today, including several descendants of the first wave of Chinese miners to come to the state 160 years ago.

"It is never too late to say sorry," Mr Andrews said.

"To every Chinese Victorian ... on behalf of the Victorian Parliament, of behalf of the Victorian Government, I express our deepest sorrow and I say to you we are profoundly sorry."


How bloody stupid! They should apologise to us for parasiting our colony and driving down living standards with cheap labour and ripping off our people by working in teams to sneak their gold from them!

When politicians aren't busy apologizing, they're begging for votes. The whole system is void of honesty and needs to be torn down. I'm always reminded of Oliver Cromwell storming the English Parliament. The real issue is our lack of standing  up to the Elites. We need real people of character running for these local/national offices. Thank you for posting, I thought only the US had splineless representation.
