Extract: A POLITICIAN'S car has been broken into during a crime spree in the state's (Victoria's) east.

The news comes as police investigate how dozens of cars were damaged in Balwyn early Boxing Day morning, where vandals left a trail of destruction.

Shadow Treasurer Michael O'Brien was woken about 1.30am to learn thieves had smashed their way into his car with baseball bats in the Malvern area.

"Our neighbours had been hit and we'd been hit and we understand that dozens of cars had been hit in the area as well. Partly it's vandalism, partly it's theft."

"When you're talking about 20 or 30 cars getting hit in the same suburb in one night this is really becoming a crime wave."

His eagle-eyed neighbour, who startled the crooks when he turned his bedroom light on, said they appeared to be "very set, large fellows" with possibly "dark skin and Pacific Islander in appearance."

The theft of around $200 from charity tins was not discovered until late the following morning on December 14.

The burglary was the third time in less than two years the Meadow Heights Mosque has been robbed of cash to support Syrian refugees.

The other two thefts saw robbers rip safes from the walls of the mosque and steal up to $10,000 in donations from the community.

Napping 'squatter' found sleeping in victims' bed at Donvale home

Extract: A NAPPING squatter held a knife to his terrified victim's neck after he was woken in bed by the couple whose home he crashed in Melbourne's east.

The occupants of a Heads Rd home in Donvale returned home about 11am on December 29, where they discovered a bed had been dragged from their bedroom into the living room.

To their surprise, a shirtless unknown man was asleep in the bed.

He was last seen making a swift exit on foot towards Aquarius Court.

No one was physically injured, and nothing was stolen from the home.

The unshaven man is aged in his early 20s and of Middle Eastern appearance, with dark eyebrows and a script tattoo on the left side of his chest.

He was also wearing a black New York Yankees cap and black shorts at the time.

Extract: BOTH men suspected of being involved in the hit-run that killed Jason McCormick on New Year's Eve were behind bars over night after police arrested the second suspect in Coconut Grove. The 36-year-old's arrest followed a public tip-off and brought to an end a four-day manhunt involving dozens of uniformed police and detectives.

Detective Acting Sen Sgt Tony Henrys said the man was due to be interviewed overnight as part of ongoing investigations.

The first arrested suspect, Wayne Abdul Sultan, appeared briefly in Darwin Local Court Thursday morning as police were closing in on his suspected co-offender.

Sultan, 34, was charged over his alleged involvement in a high-speed chase on Tuesday evening — the same car that witnesses told police left the scene after running over Mr McCormick.

Sultan was arrested in Darwin on Tuesday and has been questioned, but not charged, over the hit and run crash.

Sultan's lawyer, Jon Tippett QC, did not apply for bail.

"I can say that I have no instructions at this stage to make an application for bail," Mr Tippett said.

He is charged with recklessly endangering serious harm, driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner and driving while disqualified, unregistered and uninsured.

He was also in court on an unrelated string of charges, including three counts of stealing, four counts of unlawful entry, obtaining benefit by deception and failure to comply with parole orders.

retired Iraq war veteran who fought off eight Muslim men after they attacked his wife has tried to put the record straight on what exactly happened that day.

Kyle Tyrrell, 48, had an altercation with fishermen on Victoria's Surf Coast a year ago while standing up for his wife Liana.

Mr Tyrrell claimed that Liana was punched in the face at the Cosy Corner beach, in Torquay, after one of the men put a crab pot in the water and she told him the area was a marine sanctuary and fishing was banned.

In the fight that took place on Sunday, January 24, 2016, Mr Tyrrell suffered minor injuries, while at least one of the fishermen was taken to hospital. No charges were laid.

The retired lieutenant-colonel claimed that the attack was racially and culturally motivated after his wife was called a white sl** and a white w***e by the men.

However criticism that he has received about the incident on Facebook persuaded him to set the record straight on the incident. He confirmed that the men were Muslim and said he would 'do it again in a heartbeat'.

His response was published on the Stand Up For Australia – Melbourne Facebook page, where he argued he had no other option but to fight.

Extract: A TRAINEE heart surgeon has been busted filming men showering in the public bathrooms at Brisbane's popular South Bank parklands.

Duy Tran Le, 26, a German national, was fined $800 after pleading guilty in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday to seven counts of recording in breach of privacy.

The court heard Le had been in Australia for a month to celebrate his recent graduation from medical school when he filmed the naked men on Friday. Le filmed seven men in the space of three hours by holding his iPhone over the wall of the neighbouring cubicle.

None of the men realised they were being filmed but his behaviour drew the attention of South Bank security, who contacted police.

Acting Magistrate Jason Schubert described his actions as "disgusting". "The offences are disgusting offences, involving a serious breach of the privacy of other adult males," he said.

"I can only assume the offending was for sexual gratification purposes." Le's lawyer Kate MacArthur said her client had been accepted into a cardiology unit in Germany and would fly home on January 12.

Mr Schubert fined Le $800 and did not record a conviction.
