THE men {sic} who stole a guide dog donation box from a Berrimah newsagent was stoned and looking for money to buy more drugs.


Gerald James Ryan pleaded guilty to the damaging property, stealing and unlawful entry in Darwin Local Court yesterday, following the theft on April 26.

Judge Michael Carey des-cribed Ryan as a "recidivist thief". "There comes a stage when you can't keep calling on your age and intoxication," he said.

The court heard Ryan and a mate had been drinking and smoking cannabis, but had run out of drugs. He stashed the guide dog box in scrub, 300m down a bush track.


Defence lawyer Rory Pettit said Ryan should be hit with a "short and sharp term of imprisonment". Mr Pettit said that Ryan had "relapsed" following a stint in rehab.

The court heard Ryan plans to leave Darwin, and move to Ti Tree once he is out of prison.

TENNANT Creek kids Satan's spawn:- the stinky "box monsters" are killing domestic cats and leaving them to hang on residential properties.


A disturbing string of other anti-social acts from setting buildings on fire, smashing car windows and vandalising businesses have left locals at their wits end.

A petition calling for a youth curfew attracted more than 1000 signatures from within the small town with a population of 3000.

Barkly Youth Services chief executive Peter Cain said the petition alone wouldn't do anything, but it was needed to get the conversation rolling about the "out of control" anti-social behaviour, crime, and drug taking.

"There's been a lot of anti-social behaviour, rising levels of youth crime, a large number of young people on the street," Mr Cain said.


Manager Douglas Harris said some of the kids were as young as 12.

"We put the name of the youths on our window that they smashed, we put up a timber board and made it a name and shame board," he said.


"The response from the Aboriginal community and the white community has been enormous in care factor — which has been fairly low for a long period of time.

"The town is pretty depressed at the moment with young people."

He said youths had committed hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of damage but the town had given up hope on reporting crime.

"Police are saying everything is fine, we know there are rapes and killings," he said.

"Things are happening that people don't know about because it's not good for the town's image.

"There are no consequences, and we've got some really deep-seeded problems at the moment."

Tennant Creek and Barkly Division Superintendent Kerry Hoskins said over the past two months Tennant Creek had 20 Unlawful Entries or Attempts.

Five of those were committed by youths, however the rest were unable to be identified.

Snr-Sgt Hoskins said there were 19 criminal damages, over the past two months, with one confirmed to be youths and the other "highly likely" to have been committed by youths.

PARAMEDICS were forced to stop an all-in brawl which spilt dangerously in front of oncoming traffic on a busy Darwin road.

Fearing another pedestrian fatality was about to unfold before their eyes, the St John paramedics pulled over at the intersection of Parap Rd and the Stuart Highway on Thursday night.

Two women were wrestling on the bitumen as up to 10 bystanders formed a melee around the pair, forcing traffic to come to a halt.

Paramedics attempted to separate the women in the minutes before police arrived.

The brawl comes as emergency services offered a renewed plea for pedestrians to take responsibility for their own safety.
St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said typically paramedics avoided breaking up physical confrontations but the danger was imminent on this occasion.

"That's why the paramedics stepped in because these people have spilt out on to the road. It's a concern for us. We see it happen all the time and we have to pick up the pieces," he said.

"We don't condone it but at the end of the day if there's any type of violence it's a bit hard to not step in. When people spill out on to the road you know what's going to happen."
He said the alcohol was a factor in many of the incidents.

"We are calling on drivers to take particular care where impaired people may be frequenting or where there is a high density of pedestrian traffic," he said.

"They are serious injuries and can be life changing injuries. It's frustrating because we're trying to get the road toll down and we get this sort of behaviour that we can't control. People get killed but the drivers of the vehicles are the ones that are traumatised as well."

NT Police have captured four prisoners criminal boongs who fled from the Darwin Correction Centre's pre-release cottages last night.
The men — Christopher Keene, Ian Mamarika, Jayras Manggurra and Xavier Nundhirriballa — were found to be absent at a roll call yesterday evening after they were seen close to the boundary fence.

A MAN was hit in the face with an axe in an assault in Katherine.

Acting Superintendent Angela Stringer said an incident occurred at Kirby's Bar in the early hours of yesterday morning, which sparked the attack at a residence later in the morning.

"A large group of hostile intoxicated people were at the residence where some assaults occurred," she said.

"Weapons were used including an axe and a baseball bat. Persons have been assaulted and vehicles have been damaged as a result of the incidents. It appears to us at this stage it started at Kirby's and has flowed on to the residence."

St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said the 21-year-old man was in a stable condition after sustaining injuries to his head and face.

Police are seeking public assistance to locate 23-year-old Nicholas Munnich following a robbery at a Darwin shopping centre.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said police wanted to speak to Mr Munnich about the robbery at Northlakes Shopping Centre on May 3.

"Mr Munnich is also wanted by police on outstanding warrants for drug related offences," he said.
"He is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, of slim to medium build and 173cm tall."
