The founder of the Australian Arabic Council and the former Multicultural Affairs Commissioner has pleaded guilty to sexually penetrating a young boy.

Joseph Wakim, a regular social commentator on human rights affairs and a widowed father of three girls, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court charged with three serious child sex offences on Friday.

The 53-year-old committed the offence in December last year in Bundoora, north of Melbourne, but was only charged in January.

Two of those charges - including grooming - were withdrawn on Friday but he pleaded guilty to sexually penetrating the boy.

Mr Wakim, who now lives in NSW, has written over 600 opinion pieces in national newspapers on a number of human rights issues.

He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Social Work and went on to establish a street project for disadvantaged and homeless youth in Adelaide in 1986 ....

In 1991 he was appointed Victoria's youngest Multicultural Affairs Commissioner, and was granted the Order of Australia Medal in 1995 for public campaigns aimed at redressing the roots of racism.

In 1992 he established the Australian Arabic Council - an organisation aimed at improving relations between the Arabic and wider Australian community and often used as a voice to speak dictate to local and federal government.

Further anti-racism campaign initiatives resulted in Mr Wakim earning the the Commonwealth Heads of Government Violence Prevention Award in 1996.

Roland Jabbour, current chairman of the Australian Arabic Council, said the news about Mr Wakim's child sex offences came as 'a great surprise and a shock.'

'It's come completely out of the blue. It's completely out of character, and for anyone that has known Joe – he has always come across as of excellent character,' Mr Jabbour told Daily Mail Australia.

'Anyone that would know Joe would be taken aback ... he did outstanding work for the community and the council and contributed to a number of areas in social work and multiculturalism.' [more ...]

Sydney, NSW: Sand-Nigger Investigated calling for the murder of White Australians

A man, using the name Abu Zakariyah, posted a photo of ISIL magazine Dabiq and an AK-47 rifle on Sunday, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The post was published the same day a 16-year-old Auburn teen was arrested for allegedly trying to buy a gun and carry out a shooting at an Anzac Day service.

"Kill the crusaders and other disbelievers and apostates ... to make an example of them," the newspaper quotes the magazine as saying.

Zakariyah is connected on Facebook to a number of suspected Islamic extremists, including Wisam Haddad, who last year closed down the al Risalah Islamic Centre in Bankstown, in Sydney's southwest.

Counter-terror police believe the centre was a hub for radical Islamic preaching.

MOMENTS before shots rang out at a Bankstown shopping centre this morning, a man rushed into a shop inside screaming, "There's not enough f***ing time".

Standover man and convicted killer Walid "Wally" Ahmad was shot dead and two others were injured at the centre when an unknown person opened fire inside Bankstown Central, in Sydney's southwest, just before noon.

'IT'S CLEARLY TARGETED'

Bankstown police commander Detective Superintendent David Eardley confirmed a 40-year-old man is dead and two others were injured in the shooting.

Police believe the gunman did not act alone and a burnt-out white Mercedes connected to the crime has been found in Greenacre.

While police have not confirmed the identity of the victim, he said police would also be looking at the connection with another shooting at Condell Park earlier this month.

"It's clearly targeted; this is not a random shooting," Det Supt Eardley said.

"People need to understand and feel safe to go about the streets and their daily lives."

Huge fire completely destroys Islamic centre in Sydney's southwest

The blaze inside the building on Croydon St, Lakemba, started shortly before 9am this morning. No one was inside the building.

The building houses the United Muslims of Australia youth centre and was formerly a bowling club. The cause of the fire is not yet known and police continue to investigate the circumstances.

A convicted rapist who bolted while on a day trip at a popular Darwin tourist attraction was captured.


A Territory police spokesman said Wickham Point detainee Amit Hamal was arrested in the Darwin CBD before 7pm.

The NT News understands the 27-year-old man was part of a group visiting Crocosaurus Cove from Wickham Point when he bolted from the party.


The man jumped the back fence and ran towards Smith St.

Staff from Serco were seen scouring the streets of Darwin early yesterday afternoon.

Hamal was found guilty in 2011 of raping a woman in Sydney.
