The Northern Territory's health minister has accused Gurrumul's music label of using his recent health crisis as publicity for a new album.

John Elferink said the Aboriginal singer received the finest care when he was admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital over Easter with internal bleeding relating to his ongoing liver and kidney problems, but Gurrumul's doctor and manager have accused staff of leaving him to bleed for more than eight hours, and of racially profiling him as a drinker.

"Frankly to extrapolate that racism and racial profiling is pervasive in the NT health system because a doctor makes a notation about previous alcohol abuse is nothing shy of lunacy," Mr Elferink told ABC local radio.

"The Skinnyfish organisation continues to orate issues of racial abuse at about the time when their talent is about to release albums or is on the touring circuit."  [more ...]

Note: In most Australian states, reduced sentencing laws for Aboriginal offenders means that an Indigenous Australian offender receives a mandatory reduced sentence, with the race of the victim being a non-issue.

Meanwhile, a White or European Australian offender in the same situation would receive maximum sentencing determined by 1. his own race (White Australian) and 2. on the race of the victim being other than White being justification for harsher sentencing.

The Australian Bar Association is right in stating that the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system has nothing to do with racial discrimination.

The belief that most Indigenous people are in jail because they have been unfairly targeted by police and arrested for relatively minor "social nuisance" offences is not true.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics on prisoner characteristics shows that of the 9,885 indigenous prisoners in 2015, only 1,069 Indigenous prisoners were in jail for offences against justice procedures, such as non-payment of fines. Most (56 per cent) were in jail for serious crimes such as homicide, assault and sex offences.

... although many social justice advocates claim "the criminal laws and sentencing regulations unfairly target Indigenous people", if there is any discrimination it tends to be in favour of Indigenous people. Overall, Indigenous offenders receive shorter sentences than non-Indigenous offenders for most crimes.

"Is Aboriginal offending somehow less serious, because, for some reason, Aboriginal offenders are not as culpable for their actions as others? Or are their victims somehow less in need of the system's albeit limited protections? Are their injuries and needs less deserving of serious attention and response?"

Reduced sentencing discriminates against Aboriginal victims who have the right to sentencing that reflects the seriousness of the crime against them. It gives the wrong message that the courts regard violent offenders as the "victim" by reason of Aboriginality. It risks the threat of retribution on the part of the aggrieved victim's family, who may not feel that justice has been properly done.

A TEENAGER from Woodridge has pleaded guilty to a sickening attack on two Korean students outside a Southport karaoke bar in December last year.

Kauri Ash, 18, appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court today and pleaded guilty to robbery and assault occasioning bodily harm following a vicious attack on two men who were sitting in the gutter smoking outside a bar on Scarborough St in 2015.

Co-accused Cameron South, 26, who kicked one of the men in the head, did not appear in court today.

During the vicious attack, which was captured on CCTV footage, Ash and South kicked and punched the men before robbing one of them while he was unconscious.

The pair also assaulted two good-samaritans who came to the aid of the unconscious man.

Ash will be sentenced in the district court after the Director of Public Prosecutions prepares a copy of the written charges.

Armed naked woman with boy tasered in WA

A naked woman armed with a knife and pushing a four-year-old boy in a trolley has been tasered by police in Western Australia's South West region.

Police say the 43-year-old woman refused repeated requests to put the knife down before she was tasered and taken to Bunbury Regional Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

The child was not injured and arrangements have been made for his care by family members while the incident is investigated.

FRONTLINE police will be redeployed to the Nightcliff Police Station, but a walk-in counter service is not part of the operational changes.


The traffic branch, which is currently based at the station, will be moved to the Peter Macauley Centre in Berrimah. Up to 30 police from the metropolitan group will be located at Nightcliff.

Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said the cessation of funding for the delivery of border force services to the detention centres meant they could realign and redeploy existing resources.

"We will commence a social order hub where we will be engaging people on the front foot where we will try to limit the amount of anti-social behaviour we have seen across Darwin," he said.

"Nightcliff residents can therefore expect to see significant comings and goings of police activity, as well as a continued and heavy focus on anti-social BOX MONSTER behaviour in the Nightcliff area.

"The focus of the Nightcliff Police Station will be an operational hub. It won't be open to the public because we want to ensure as many resources as available actually doing public engagement in public places.

Nightcliff is currently a hotspot for anti-social BOONGbehaviour and we have seen this before in areas like Parap, Fannie Bay and Palmerston. We believe this model will help with our co-ordination in tackling anti-social behaviour."


The move is expected to occur over the next few months, but Deputy-Commissioner Chalker said the enforcement component would start immediately.

The owner of Groove Cafe, Pauline Joy, welcomed the greater police presence, saying its timing is interesting given there is an election soon.


"I'd love more police presence in the area and it is obviously a hotspot," she said.

Groove has been broken into 54 times over a 14-year period.

Ms Joy wants permanent CCTV cameras installed in the area. She said Parap had 11 cameras compared to Nightcliff's one mobile unit.

"Cameras operate 24/7 with a minimal costs and they will be highly effective for break-ins and anti-socialBOONG behaviour which occurs in the area," she said. "No one wants to fork out the money for it."

"It was just 'oh my god it's happened again'. And then within another 20 minutes we got hit again by some juveniles," he said. "It's heart breaking. You work so hard and it's constantly at you the whole time eating away at you."

Mr Barling said crime has gradually become worse in the three years since he took over the business.

"People question why so many people come and go in the Territory," he said
"I can tell you, from a retail perspective, I asked myself sometimes 'why do we bother?'. We've moved up from Tasmania to give it a go up here and you're just up against it the whole time."

He said the lost income and constant thefts made him question the long term viability of his business.

"When you start to accumulate that kind of loss it takes a lot of sales to recoup that money. It's substantial."

"I've never encountered anything like that down in Tassie. Although there is theft everywhere in Australia but it starts to get to the point where it's quite damaging.

"The overwhelming majority of the community were fantastic and you can have your product out on display and honest people come and buy it.

"The centre is doing everything they can. They must be pumping in so much money in with security and there is a strong police presence and that certainly makes a big difference, but they can't be here 24/7."

The woman allegedly stole shoes from Intersport store only minutes before targeting Mr Barling's newsagency.

Part owner Luke Tyrell said thefts were common place at his shop. "They'll just walk past and nearly every day we'll find someone trying to steal something," he said.

"It just happens all the time, so we've got to police it better."

ROSALIE Lalara will spend at least 18 months behind bars for the "sad, pathetic" theft of nearly $500,000 from the Groote Eyelandt Aboriginal Trust.

NT Supreme Court Justice Graham Hiley said Lalara, 58, had breached the trust of her own people while she was the Public Officer for the trust, during which time she purchased dozens of boats, four-wheel-drives and quad bikes for friends.

In sentencing, Justice Hiley rejected an appeal for mercy from Lalara's lawyer, Marty Aust, who had argued, that Lalara's poor health and the dependence of her adult daughter — whose name is suppressed and who suffers from cerebral palsy — merited a lenient sentence.

Justice Hiley found that Lalara was to blame for her own "sad pathetic story", made worse by her repeated sacking of lawyers, her dubious, last minute apology and her failure to pay back any money to the trust.
