German Court Sentences Man to 18 Months in Prison for 'Holocaust Denial'

The German Neonazi and Holocaust denier Gerhard Ittner was sentenced to 18 months in prison by a regional court in Bavaria on Tuesday. The court in Nuremberg-Fuerth found the 57-year-old guilty of incitement and disparaging the state and its symbols. Ittner distributed pamphlets denying the Holocaust between 2011 and 2012. Police located him in 2012 in Portugal, where he was distributing propaganda material via the internet. Ittner caused nationwide protests in 2003 when he organized a right-wing gathering near the former Nazi party rallying grounds in Nuremberg. He announced at the time that he was planning additional protests in Nuremberg. Ittner was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for incitement in 2005 and subsequently went into hiding.

Ex-Auschwitz Medic, 95, to Stand Trial in Germany

A 95-year-old former medic at the Auschwitz death camp will go on trial next month on at least 3,681 counts of accessory to murder, German authorities said Monday. Hubert Zafke was a medical orderly at the camp from August 15, 1944, to September 14, 1944 ... Ahead of proceedings due to begin February 29, prosecutors said Zafke was "aware of the purpose of the Birkenau camp as an extermination camp" as well as of its structure. "Given his awareness, the accused lent support to the organisation of the camp and was thereby both involved in and advanced the extermination," said prosecutors ... The court acknowledged that he had "cognitive impairments and low physical capacity" and ordered regular breaks during the hearings, as well as medical care.

Consternation at Austrian Case of Nazi Camp Survivors Called a 'Plague'

Concentration camp survivors voiced indignation on Wednesday at an Austrian prosecutor's statement that it was justifiable for a far-right magazine to call people who were liberated from the Nazi camp at Mauthausen a criminal "plague." An article in the July/ August edition of the far-right Die Aula magazine said that description applied to a significant number of freed inmates, saying they committed a range of crimes nearby after Nazi guards fled at the end of World War Two.

Italy's Parliament approved a bill making spreading Holocaust denial illegal. The bill, which adds to an existing anti-racism bill, was approved Wednesday evening by the lower assembly of the Parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, by a vote of 237-5, with 102 abstentions. The new law would go after those who deny genocide or crimes against humanity, using the definition by the International Court of Justice, the German news agency DPA reported. Those convicted could face prison terms of two to six years. The measure punishes ideas "based entirely or partly" on negationist ideology only when "there is a real danger of their dissemination," according to DPA. [more ...]

In California, People Sign 'Holocaust Celebration' Petitions

As a social experiment, media analyst Mark Dice asks randomly selected people at a beach pier in southern California to sign a petition to keep the "Holocaust Beach Party" from being canceled due to budget cuts. The Holocaust, he explains, is a "favorite celebration of the Jewish people," a "Jewish festival," and a "Jewish holiday." He urges support for the "Holocaust celebration" and the "Holocaust reenactment." No one disputes what he says. Dice is surprised and frustrated by the ignorance of these ordinary Americans. Many Americans seem utterly unmoved by what politicians, educators and the media in the US has been telling them for years about the importance of "the Holocaust."
