UPDATE: UGLY scenes erupted in Bendigo as anti-Islam and anti-racist protesters faced off over the construction of a controversial mosque in the town.

Frontline police trying to keep rival protest groups apart were forced to use pepper spray as tensions boiled over high about 3.20pm.

Officers deployed the capsicum spray after anti-racism protesters set fire to an Australian flag, triggering a furious reaction from rivals.

But Victoria Police spokeswoman Clair White said no arrests were made at the demonstrations.

"Police used OC spray to separate a few minor scuffles," she said.

"The crowd of approximately 400 protestors has now started to disperse, but police will maintain a presence in the area for the rest of the evening."

Hundreds of United Patriots Front protesters gathered in Hargreaves Mall from 1.30pm in a stance against the $3 million mosque, which was given planning approval earlier this month.

The anti-Islam demonstrators argue 85 per cent of the town's residents don't support the mosque being built.
No Room For Racism demonstrators charged towards the group soon after calling them "Nazi scum" and chanting "Muslims are welcome, racists are not".

A strong police contingent, including officers on horseback, managed to keep the opposing groups at bay as they shout racial slurs and abuse at each other over barriers keeping them apart.

Authorities earlier feared the possibility of violence erupting during a protest against the construction of a controversial mosque in Bendigo.

Earlier, UPF spokesman Blair Cottrell said residents did not want the mosque.

"It's a demonstration of community strength and pride," he told 3AW yesterday.

He said he couldn't promise there wouldn't be clashes between UPF and counter protesters.


A counter-protest with similar numbers gathered to meet them.

The City of Greater Bendigo's chief executive said residents had the right to practise their religion.

POLICE have quelled an ugly confrontation between pro and anti Islamic protesters in Bendigo as the opposing groups staged separate rallies over plans to build a mosque in the town.


About 400 anti-racism protesters, including masked members, gathered outside the Bendigo Town Hall and later faced off with hundreds more United Patriots Front protesters in Bendigo's Rosalind Park.

Some members of the anti-racism group clashed with a group of unidentified young men outside a hotel, during a march to the park.



Police were also forced to detain a man taking photos of masked members of an anti-racism group.

The masked members shouted "f--- off Nazi" and grabbed the man's camera, causing him to lash out.

Police kept the two groups separated in Rosiland park although taunts and slogan were yelled between the rallies.



UPF organiser Blair Cottrell said it would be the group's "biggest demonstration ever".

The No Room For Racism organiser, Yarra councillor Stephen Jolly, said Bendigo residents had had enough of racists targeting their city.

"Bendigo is under siege from the racists and is being unfairly targeted for this national protest," he said.
Bendigo Mayor Peter Cox said it was disappointing there was another "anti-Islam rally".

"While we are not used to this and it's upsetting to see Bendigo portrayed in a negative light, events such as this do not define the city," he said.

AN investigation aiming to expose and challenge the views of anti-Islam group Reclaim Australia has backfired for Channel Seven.

An interview with the political group's founders, who describe themselves as "patriotic Australians", aired on the network's Sunday Night program to a divided audience.


Sadly some of their organisers are just clowns who are frightened of being known as a racist group, so they have to race around hob-nobbing with nig -nogs. No point wearing the flag on the outside if it isn't worn on the inside!




While some criticised the program for publicising the group's "racist" views, a significant portion of the audience indicated they agreed with the controversial protesters.

Asking whether audience members thought Reclaim Australia represented Australian values, an online poll saw the majority of viewers vote yes while the story aired.

At one point, the vote sat at 78 — 22 in favour of Reclaim Australia, and has since evened out to 41 — 59.

Members of the provocative group celebrated the publicity opportunity, claiming the later numbers had been "fiddled with" and thanked the network for a boost in followers.

"The early results were the honest and true ones. It became clear it was going to be an onslaught in our favour," one commenter wrote on Facebook.

"Don't worry! It's a win. Great media exposure, page numbers are up!"

Reporter Alex Cullen who was embedded with Reclaim Australia leaders during a recent rally described the influence of the group's Facebook page, which now boasts more than 48,000 likes since Seven's story aired, as "downright scary".

Anticipating criticism for giving the controversial group airtime, Cullen had already prepared a justification for airing the story.

"A lot of people ask me, 'why are you giving these people airtime?' It's a fair question and one I have thought long and hard about. I have to then ask, why not?," he wrote.

"These are real people with a serious story to tell as are those who are standing up to oppose them. Their actions concern a lot of people, from the Prime Minister down. So, do they warrant our attention? Their motivations, views and aspirations should be questioned and that's exactly what we're doing."

Many viewers took to social media criticising the program for promoting "bigoted" views, while others claimed to have been converted after viewing.

And when Europe, America and Australia wind the clocks back to the dark ages and stone age, if the Chinks remain as they are with some kind of technologically adept Pan-Asiatic Empire, why would a Gook want to bring back the White Race? If the Gooks succeed in bringing back the mammoth, it will be as Mammoth Burgers. What will they be bringing us back for? Soylent Green Chips?

Anyway, that's how the majority of Nationalists and National Socialists think, and once you get down to it, it really shows that we Creators - We Racial Socialists - are totally on our own. For the meantime, as long as they don't get in our way, we will make use of them as we do the more intelligent of the Kosher Konservatives.
