FORMER AFL star Jason Roe was chastised before being given an 18-month suspended prison sentence in the NT Supreme Court. 
 
Roe, 31, faced a maximum 14 years behind bars when he pleaded guilty to one count of supplying a total 756g of cannabis — a commercial quantity — to another person.

Justice Stephen Southwood told the former Brisbane Lions player, who also mentored young indigenous sportsmen and was involved in the Territory's Clontarf education program, that his "conduct was far more serious than a stupid mistake".

"For most Aboriginal people in the NT football means hope and pride, it's a powerful social agent that provides a vehicle for achievement for many disadvantaged young men," he said.

"Most modern footballers are not role models — they are professional sportsmen who are well paid.


"By choosing to hold yourself up as a role model and failing to live up to that standard by (committing a drug offence) you have let a lot of people down."

Roe has been banned from leaving the NT, taking drugs and drinking alcohol for a year, and must not commit another offence in he next 18 months or face actual prison time.


Lately there has been an NRL and AFL grandfinal and both captains of winning sides have been Abos.They just couldn't help themselves by stating that both "men of the match were Aboriginal".

The Left love this sort of coverage  for Abos because it seems like footy is the only thing these Abos can possibly succeed at. It does great damage to their lefty pursuits when the hero Abos break the law and show themselves up for being crooks. Shows they are not capable of mentoring young people.

PORT Adelaide will use an indigenous recording of its club song in the AFL Indigenous Round — a league first.

And the Power will also play the indigenous version of "Power to Win" when the Port Adelaide team runs onto Adelaide Oval for the home clash with West Coast on May 21, the weekend before the indigenous round clash with Melbourne in Alice Springs.

The indigenous "Power to Win" is the work of Port Adelaide Aboriginal programs manager Paul Vandenbergh who started on the project a year ago.

"The hardest part of the project," says Vandenbergh, "was identifying which (indigenous) language group to work with."

Vandenbergh opted for the Pitjantjatjara language of north-west SA because of its relevance in SA and the Indigenous Round clash with Melbourne in Central Australia.

"And," adds Vandenbergh, "the other challenge was dealing with some words that don't translate from English ... such as 'Power'."

No doubt "Power" has been translated as "Stick" and "Port" translated to "Billabong." Hence Port Power = Billabong Stick.
