• Protesters in South Carolina have begun burning Confederate flags in response to the state's refusal to remove the flag from the capitol
• In Charleston, a monument honoring Confederate soldiers who defended the city during the Civil War was vandalized
• The vandal or vandals spray painted the base, writing 'Black Lives Matter' and 'This is the problem #racist'
• Meanwhile, presidential hopefuls have been doing their best to not weigh in on the controversy in any definitive manner
• Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee both said it should be a state choice, while Hillary Clinton has not commented at all
• On Saturday, Mitt Romney wrote on social media that the flag should be taken down in the wake of Wednesday's racially motivated massacre

Upstate South Carolina man pushes petition to remove African American Monument

Harmon lives in the Upstate and said Roof misrepresented the flag as symbol of evil.

"My great, great, great grandfather and ancestors fought in this war for this state," he said.

So, now he's started a petition and said if the Confederate flag is removed from Statehouse grounds the African American Monument should also be removed.

"The African-American Monument was put there in 2001 as a compromise in 2000 for the Confederate flag to be moved off the dome," he said.

On Tuesday, lawmakers discussed the possibility of removing the flag. According to the newspaper, the Post and Courier, reporters are conducting a poll that shows how lawmakers may vote on the flag issue. As of Tuesday afternoon, the poll showed all Democrats from the Upstate in the House and Senate said they would vote yes to bring the flag down, along with some Republicans. [more ...]
