ONE of three inmates who escaped from Port Augusta Prison remains at large as the Corrections Department begins an investigation into how they were able to break out. 
 
Police are continuing to search for Howard Clyde Weetra after he and fellow inmates Craig Cullinan and Troy Churchill escaped from the low-security section of Port Augusta Prison about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The men were seen running south and wearing prison-issue green trousers and maroon coloured tops.

Cullinan, 23, of Coober Pedy, and Churchill, 32, from Mimili, were arrested by police in Port Augusta West about 5.30am on Thursday.

Police have searched several properties in and around Port Augusta on Thursday but are yet to find Weetra.

Weetra, 24, from Port Augusta, is described as of Aboriginal appearance, 171cm tall, 61kg and of slim build.

POLICE are looking for witnesses to the death of a 12-year-old who police believe inhaled up to two cans of aerosol deodorant on Saturday night. 
 
The boy may have sniffed up to two aerosol cans, police said.

Southern Watch Commander Drew Slape said the boy was found unconscious by passers by about 8.20pm in the Alice Springs Coles' carpark, between Railway Terrace and Bath St.

Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison said the boy had reportedly been "excessively sniffing aerosol cans" with a group of eight young people.

"(We've received reports) the group consumed a couple of cans each," he said.

"The others weren't affected."

Supt Harrison said a police officer patrolling Liquorland was notified that "someone had collapsed near the Discount Chemist in Alice" and "went to check the young fella's vital signs".

"The member didn't find anything and commenced CPR and St John (Ambulance) was called," he said.

St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said the boy was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived on scene.

"He was treated by a couple of intensive care paramedics and transported to hospital," he said.

"They worked on him for about an hour then realised there was nothing more they could do for him."

The boy died in Alice Springs Hospital about 9.30pm.

Supt Harrison said the boy's death was "a tragedy". a bonus!

RETIRED truck driver Darryll Lambert has a spiked stick he uses to kill cane toads. Ex-ambulance officer Tony Champion has a golf club. 
 
The men, who live at public housing flats in the Palmerston suburb of Gray, want to join a vigilante group.

A Facebook page called "Darwin and Palmerston Vigilante Justice" was created on Christmas Eve when angry residents rose up against a spate of car thefts and crime the previous night. But it has since disappeared. The willingness of many residents to take the law into their own hands has not.

Mr Lambert, 68, watches the cricket inside his red brick unit wearing no shirt and a gold chain.

He has a flowing mullet and a busted back from his working life.

He reckons more people will need to resort to violence to defend their homes as crime rises in the Top End.

"If anyone tried to come in here, I'd f***ing kill 'em," Mr Lambert said. "I'd fight them the best I could."



Mr Lambert said he chased two kids – no older than 12 – who tried to break into his flat early last Tuesday.

"I just stuck my head out through the window, pulled the curtain back, and there were two little fellas coming this way.

"I yelled at 'em ... I was going to try and grab one of 'em but I can't move.

"It's not the first time.

"There was a young girl, quarter past three in the morning, playing with the door handle – I pulled the curtain back and bloody hell, here she is trying to get in. I yelled out at her and, Jesus, she got the shock of her life."

Nobody has ever managed to break into Mr Lambert's home but he says possessions have been stolen from his porch.

He has been shoved up against his front wall and punched.

Mr Champion, 60, said he had also been shirt fronted and had people "fornicating" on his porch beneath his bedroom window.

He says his front and back security lights are "always" set off between 3am and 5.30am. He does not feel safe and says police take too long to respond. The perps are long gone before cops arrive.

"I've got two $2500 Crimsafe doors and I've got security screens on every window," he said. "My windows are all barred."

Mr Champion said he asked NT Housing for metal bars to surround his veranda.

"And they said, 'No, you can't have em'," he said. "We have to live in fear. Darryll and I have to sit inside and have a cuppa, can't sit on the porch."

And the men cooked up the idea of vigilante justice.

"I have no idea (what it entails) but it is worth checking out," he said.

"Darryll can't drive much, I would have to drive him around but that is okay. We could just patrol a street at 3am. We've got to do something."

JOHN McKenzie is so fed up with people trying to break into his home he's resorted to a costly measure – an extensive CCTV system. 
 
On New Year's Eve John left the family home in Tiwi to drop his daughter and her friend in the city.

Their gate, which is usually padlocked, was left open for around three minutes when some teenagers took the opportunity to make off with two mountain bikes parked on their porch area. John's wife, Sandra, was home at the time and when the dogs started barking went out to check.

Sandra said she saw the bikes were missing and chased the alleged thieves.

"I chased them until I thought 'hang on what am I going to do if I catch them'," she said.

"They were a group of five teenagers and I was by myself."


But thanks to the CCTV they've got a picture of the two crims and are appealing to the public to help identify them.

"If anyone can identify the people in this picture it would be great if they could contact police, the PROMIS number relating to our case is P14311917," John said.

In a stroke of luck a few days after the incident Sandra was driving along when she saw her bike.

After contacting police she approached the group of teenagers and reclaimed it.

"It was just pure luck ... the boy who was riding it said he had borrowed it off a friend," she said.

"The police were fantastic ... every time we have had to deal with them they have been great."

The second bike stolen remains missing.

Sandra said she wasn't frightened about the continual threat of break-ins.

"They should be frightened if I ever catch them," she said.





   

The McKenzie family was broken into in May when burglars drugged their dog and climbed through a doggie door.

They stole John's car and the keys to Sandra's.

A few days later the car was found torched in the rural area. In October the thieves were back to try their luck with his wife's car. Luckily the couple had the car's locks changed.

"It is absolutely rife around here," John said.

"It is getting to the point where we are considering leaving, we don't want to live like this ... you do feel violated.

"It seems unfair that we are the ones locked up in our homes when these crims are running around on the streets."

A STABBING victim hit her attacker over the head with a saucepan after an argument in a park in Coconut Grove. 
 
The 61-year-old woman was stabbed in the upper arm and chest with a steak knife the 56-year-old female attacker produced from her bag.

Superintendent Del Jones said the stabbing occurred after an argument broke out between the women in Karu Park, on the corner of Bagot Rd and Totem Rd in Coconut Grove about 7pm Monday.



"The argument escalated and one of the women removed a steak knife from her bag, and stabbed the victim four or five times," she said.

"The victim has then defender herself with a saucepan and hit the attacker over the head, leaving her with minor injuries."

Supt Jones said the offender has been arrested and spent the night in custody, while the victim was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

"The offender will be spoken to on Tuesday morning by serious crime detectives," she said.

This is a place only abos would go to have such a fight.

YOUNG criminals COONS are stealing cars with the aim of deliberately provoking police into high-speed pursuits, the head of a police specialist property crime unit says. 
 
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said car chases were an almost daily occurrence for members of Strikeforce Trident.

Car keys have become the primary target of juvenile house breakers.

"They're also after small portable items. They love i-Phones, iPads and they'll steal your cash, your jewellery ... that sort of thing," Sen-Sgt Stringer said.

Juveniles stole cars to "facilitate" other offences, including stealing other cars so they could have drag races among themselves.



"They love having races in their stolen cars. They go looking for police vehicles and do burnouts in front of them to bait you into a pursuit. You know, Grand Theft Auto," Sen-Sgt Stringer said, in reference to the highly successful action-adventure video game series.

"They've been playing too much PlayStation.

"We get them waving out the window to you and everything as they're doing burnouts past you. Sometimes it's a friendly wave. Sometimes it's a one-fingered salute."

He said the behaviour reflected contempt for the youth justice system.

But Sen-Sgt Stringer stressed these criminals represented just a small percentage of young people.(BUT A LARGE POPULATION OF COON YOUTHS)

"We're continually dealing with these kids on a weekly basis. The same ones," he said.

Sen-Sgt Stringer said police enjoyed a "fairly good rapport" with many of the young criminals.



"And they tell us a lot of good stuff," he said.

"I remember when I was a young guy getting into the job, to get into a pursuit with a stolen car was pretty rare; you'd have to work hard to find one.

"Nowadays my guys are going out there and doing it nearly every day.

"These kids doing it are off their heads on ice and other drugs and driving around in stolen vehicles at high speed and in a dangerous manner."

Last year members of Strikeforce Trident recovered more than $2.3 million worth of stolen property, including stolen vehicles. The specialist property crime unit also made 830 apprehensions and laid more than 4170 charges.
