PUBLIC consumption of alcohol is bordering on "non-existent" in the wake of the Northern Territory Police Force's recent crackdown on bottleshops in Alice Springs. 
 
Figures released by the council's Ranger Unit last week have revealed zero infringements and warning notices were issued during the past two months.

The same report suggested the number of standard drinks being tipped out — a controversial issue among the broader community — also stood at nil.

Corporate and Community Services director Craig Catchlove confirmed the drop was a result of the increase in police presence outside liquor outlets.

"The bottom line is that although there was a dramatic amount of youth activity and vandalism happening in town last month, the actual public consumption of alcohol has been very, very low," he said.
(Still doesn't mean coons won't quit being coons )

"It is absolutely a result of police being stationed outside bottleshops. It has had the most impact of any anti-alcohol initiative in the past 10-20 years.

"We have said this loud and clear to a lot of people that it may be controversial (with racial profiling) but there is no denying the effectiveness of the police outside bottleshops.

"Public consumption of alcohol is continuing to be bordering on the non-existent now, and council is continuing to work with police through afternoon river runs to keep numbers down."

Sergeant Danny Bell of the NT Police Force's Divisional Support Unit said the strategy had visibly reduced the introduction and consumption of alcohol in restricted areas.

"It's very visible, it's what keeps the guys (police officers) motivated," he said.

"They want to see mums, dads and kids be able to go to a supermarket (near a licensed premises) and feel safe, not be hassled with any antisocial behaviour.

"We really do try and work hard to ensure that area is clear of that sort of trouble."

Sergeant Bell said Operation Leyland - a focused taskforce monitor licences premises between February 27 to April 2 - achieved impressive results with the number of assaults reducing by 54 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

He said the public was originally suspicious of the strategy due to a lack of understanding but now he said they are "overwhelmingly positive".

"Our aim is to ask a broad cross section of the community and ask them where they are consuming the alcohol," Sergeant Bell said.

"We regularly have people question why they were asked and our standard response to that is we ask everybody that we can (and) we are trying to ensure the safety of people in Alice Springs, particularly vulnerable people in alcohol protected areas.

"We get regular questions and we appreciate that, there are no issues with people talking to us about that strategy."

However, Mr Catchlove said the Ranger Unit was expecting another spike in numbers with the upcoming Melbourne Demons and Port Adelaide Power match later this month.

"There is no doubt that our figures correlate to major events in town that attract people in from the communities and that's when our statistics spike," he said.


Well , don't know why they just don't go back to the good old days of Australian discrimination and deny Alcohol to the Abbos.. no good for them and no good for us! Getting tired of people pretending life is all peachy when the coons breed in full force then go around drinking themselves stupid!

Who cares if it is racial profiling in Alice springs? Everyone there knows the trouble makers there are coons who are often high or drunk! Say "Alice springs" to anybody , then ask them exactly what images that conjurs up?

AN OLD lady with a walking frame was capsicum sprayed by police after allegedly attacking her carer in Alice Springs yesterday afternoon. 
 
A concerned citizen contacted the NT News after watching the indigenous woman, described as in her 50s or 60s fall to the ground on Milner Rd, Gillen at about 2.30pm.

The witness believed the woman had been Tasered  by police - but Alice Springs Watch Commander Siiri Tennosaar denied those claims.

The witness said the woman was shaking and convulsing on the ground after "being Tasered".

"She was drooling out of her mouth - they could've killed her," the witness said.

"It was pretty brutal, really overkill." :'(*do well to do that to all of them to show them how to behave!*


She was loaded into the back of the paddywagon until an ambulance arrived to transport her to Alice Springs Hospital (ASH).



St John Ambulance Operation Manager Craig Garraway said he believes the woman had an altercation with a carer, and that she was carrying weapons.

"I think she had knives - I'm not 100 per cent sure but police taking the action they took, she must have had weapons of some sort," he said.

"She was throwing rocks, police tried to subdue her."

Mr Garraway did not believe her walking frame was the weapon in question.

He said there was nothing wrong with her apart from a pre-existing medical condition, but she was transported to ASH for examination.

Watch Commander Tennosaar refused to release a statement to the media as it was a mental health matter.

A DARING Alice Springs man attempted to do a snatch and grab from the Liquorland at the Coles Complex - which had a police officer posted out the front. 
 
A witness said the man ran straight out of the store, past the officer and turned the corner towards McDonalds.

The police officer gave chase but in another twist of date (sic), the man ran straight into a police paddywagon that was parked around the corner.

The witness told the NT News that only minutes before the incident, the police officer had been telling a couple from interstate why police were stationed outside of liquor shops in Alice Springs.

FIVE youths aged between 14 and 15 will face a total of 116 charges after a nine-day crime spree in the northern suburbs of Darwin. 
 


Strike Force Trident's Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said the youths were allegedly involved in unlawful entries in Lyons, Nakara, Bayview, Fannie Bay and Coconut Grove.

"The youths allegedly unlawfully entered 13 homes and stole five cars between May 29 and June 6," Detective Senior Sergeant Stringer said.

"One of the stolen cars, a Toyota Hilux, was used to ram the main gates of the Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre, causing significant damage."

The youths were arrested on Friday and were remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Youth Justice Court today.

THIS should not happen in Australia: a 15-month-old ­Aboriginal boy, still in nappies, locked in the back of a Northern Territory police paddy wagon. 
 
A photographer from News Corp Australia's Centralian Advocate, Justin Brierty, took this photo outside a notorious block of Alice Springs flats on Thursday afternoon.

"When I heard the child's voice coming from the back of the paddy wagon, making baby noises, I thought, 'This is not right,'" said Mr Brierty, who stood his ground when police tried to prevent him taking photos.

He spoke to people in the apartment complex who said police were called after the boy's young mother, aged 15, was allegedly seen belting the child in public view.

This account was confirmed by Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles, who was briefed by Police Commissioner John McRoberts after News Corp sought answers.

The boy's mother was seen bleeding from the face after ­allegedly being attacked by her own family members, who were attempting to stop her harming the child.

DRUNKEN neighbours put their lives at risk to extinguish a large fire at a vacant unit in suburban Darwin public housing. 
 
Police have been investigating the blaze at the now-destroyed third-storey unit at Hudson Fysh flats on Shiers St in The Narrows, which is being treated as suspicious. Nobody was injured.

Firies said the fire started in a wardrobe.

The man who lives next-door, Vincent Crowley, was on his computer when he heard commotion outside about 9.55pm on Monday.

"There was two or three people trying to break the door down to get in," the 56-year-old pensioner said.

"The smoke was starting to get blacker and thicker.

"People were saying they thought there was someone sitting on the other side of the door, which thankfully didn't turn out to be true."

Mr Crowley rang 000 while the men finally broke the door down.

Other residents grabbed nearby fire hoses and extinguishers from the stairwells.






"Some were starting to go inside which was stupid because some of them were drunk," Mr Crowley, a retired paramedic, said.

"One guy was pissed-as, but I'll give him is credit — he got all the fire extinguishers.

"These guys turned the hoses on him, which was good.

"He was worried he had a mate in there.

"Although he was drunk, he was pretty helpful."

Mr Crowley said the absent next-door neighbours were unknown to him, and he thought they had only recently moved in.

"I was trying to stop the people going inside," he said.
