AS MANY as 50 prisoners at the Berrimah Prison are in lockdown after a "disturbance" forced the highly trained Immediate Action Squad into a rare show of strength. 
 
Department of Corrections spokesman David Harris said prisoners from C Block had been locked in a dining area on Friday while guards conducted a routine search of the cells.

A group of them — between 40 and 50 — then began to shout and bash on the windows, triggering a swift response from the IAS, who subdued the mob and marched the offending prisoners back to their cells.

Mr Harris played down the incident as "very minor" and "not a riot".

"It was just a group ... refusing to follow directions — they just needed to be talked to," he said.

"Cooler heads prevailed and everyone went about their business."

Justice Minister John Elferink said the matter was still under investigation.

"It was just a bit of push and shove between the fellows from Port Keats," he said.

The prisoners have been placed in lockdown, which means they are confined to their cells with limited release.

While not as seen as a major incident, Mr Harris conceded the IAS was rarely called upon in Territory prisons.

"It's not often," he said. "We don't have a history of really big issues to deal with in the prisons, but we have to have them (the IAS) on standby."

The IAS is made up of specially-trained prison guards fitted out with riot gear, but not weapons.

FORMER AFL star Liam Jurrah will plead guilty to two charges on Friday, the Alice Springs Magistrates Court has heard. 
 
The 25-year-old stands charged with two additional offences to his driving charges including aggravated assault and engaging in conduct that contravenes a DVO.

The court heard that he will plead guilty to one of the new charges as well as one of the driving charges, which he received in December last year.

Appearing via video link in a bright orange T-shirt with dishevelled hair, Jurrah looked stony-faced as proceedings quickly played out before him.

He stared down at the table in front of him nodding occasionally to indicate his understanding.

He has been in custody for nine days and will be remanded until Friday when he will again face court.

The charges stem from an incident at a football lightning carnival on Easter Monday.

It is believed he threatened a woman with a tyre iron and a knife.

Jurrah was also listed to appear in court for driving in the Northern Territory with a disqualified interstate licence.

The driving charges Jurrah faces include driving at speed and in a manner that is dangerous, failing to obey the directions of a police officer and driving in the NT while disqualified ­interstate will go to hearing.

ALICE Springs retailers have withdrawn a popular brand of deodorant from their shelves after a mammoth spate of inhalant cases by minors in recent weeks. 
 
This is the second deodorant sniffing outbreak in the past year. Three children were taken to Alice Springs Hospital in April, 2013 after sniffing deodorant.

The Central Australian Youth Link-Up Service has joined forces with police and varying supermarkets in an effort to combat the issue.






    Policy and Project manager Tristan Ray said the surge in cases came off the back of a major sporting event held in town two weeks ago.

"Following the Lightning Cup Carnival, we saw a big spike in deodorant can sniffing in town with almost 500 cases being reported over the past couple of weeks," he said.

"We have been working with a number of stores across town, not just the major supermarkets, to remove the products from the shelves and place them behind the counter for a couple of weeks. They are mainly being stolen ... so this makes it harder for people to get.

"We try to target the substances that are mainly being used and we are monitoring the situation by regularly visiting problem areas, working with youth services and following up reports from rangers.

Ex-AFL star Liam Jurrah has been sentenced to three months imprisonment for assaulting his wife. 
 
Magistrate David Bamber told the court Jurrah would be sentenced to five months, which would be backdated to April 21, and suspended after three months.

He said Jurrah will enter DASA when told to complete the rehabilitation program and must be on good behaviour for a 12 month period.

The 25-year-old is not allowed to enter Alice Springs upon completion of the rehabilitation program without permission of a probation officer and cannot consume alcohol within the 12 month period.

A fine of $450 was imposed for breaching the DVO with an additional $550 for driving in the NT while disqualified interstate.

Jurrah pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife and engaging in conduct that contravenes his domestic violence order against her as well as driving in the NT while disqualified interstate.

The court heard that Jurrah punched his wife in the face twice and kicked her body following an argument.

FOUR people have been punched in the head — including a 75-year-old man — and a young man has been stabbed in a violent Mother's Day in Darwin. 
 
The 75-year-old man was punched to the ground by a 30-year-old man at Dinah Beach boat ramp about 3.15pm after complaining to a fellow boatie about his speed and the amount of wake created.

But Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said both men were in the wrong.

"The 75-year-old was arguing with him and he allegedly picked up something from the ground and the 30-year-old felt threatened," she said.

"Police went down there and they made up on the spot."

The older man had bruises on his face and a bump on the back of his head. No charges have been laid.

CAR PARK ATTACK HIGHLIGHTS HOSPITAL'S DANGEROUS CONDITIONS

In the northern suburbs, a 59-year-old man drinking a carton of beer on Nightcliff foreshore with a mate was badly beaten because he refused to share beer with a stranger.

"He was quite badly smashed," she said.

"Some stray went up and said "Why don't you share your beer" and then the same stray went up and smashed a rock on his head."

He walked to a nearby house on Chapman Rd for help.

The man's ear was badly damaged and he was brought to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

"He won't be wearing glasses for a while," Sen Sgt Jorgensen said.

The attacker was described as "tall, young-looking, and of aboriginal descent".

On the other side of the city at Mindil Beach, a 29-year-old taxi driver was allegedly punched in the eye by one of his passengers.

The passenger was in a group whom had just been brought from the Casino, to Millner, and back to Mindil Beach.



The alleged attacker is described as 17 to 18 years old, of aboriginal appearance, and wearing a black singlet.

Sen Sgt Jorgensen said police are still investigating and trying to find the culprit.

The security footage — filmed from several angles on the shop's 12 cameras — shows the youths laughing as they take turns stealing various items and ignoring Mr Paris' pleas for them to stop.

In one frame, a boy in a red hat appears to threaten Mr Paris as he gets dangerously close to his face.

"He said 'do you want me to beat you down?'," Mr Paris said.

"The other asked if I want to be still alive."

"I didn't want to make it worse for me so I didn't wrestle him down."

The footage shows the boy wearing the hat going behind the sales counter and throwing cigarettes — which Mr Paris had been restocking prior to the robbery — and bags of money from the till to his friends.
