MEMBERS of Wadeye's notorious gangs feel forced into joining the groups because of family obligations, a new report has found.
An Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) report into youth gangs in Wadeye interviewed eight members who were in jail in Darwin and surveyed 133 young people from the community.
"Most interviewees noted that they didn't want to join a gang but had to due to kin obligation," the report says.


"The gang chose the individual rather than the individual choosing the gang."
Wadeye, an indigenous community about 400km south-west of Darwin, has a population of about 1600.
Gang violence is entrenched and last year hundreds of people roamed the town carrying axes, iron bars and other weapons.  A study in 2004 found there were 14 gangs operating, many of which are named after heavy metal bands such as Judas Priest, the Metallica Boys and the Megadeth Mob.
Some gangs had members aged only seven to 14, but more established gangs had members mainly aged from about 15 to 25.

One gang member quoted in the AIC report said Wadeye's gangs were in fact more like tribes.
"If you're born into it, you have to be in a gang to the old tribal stuff," the member said. "Gang leader means doing ceremony."
The report found the gangs had evolved in an environment of "substantial social and economic disadvantage".
It said the gangs may be considered a response to that environment as much as the cause of it.



Seems like it is entrenched in Aboriginal culture to be in a gang and be violent. These people don't have a place in our society and this behaviour can't be justified. If they have Bikie legislation in the works.. how about Aboriginal anti -gang legislation too?

Northern Territory police have arrested a 12-year-old boy after he crashed a stolen police car near Alice Springs.
Police say the boy stole the car from Santa Teresa Police Station about 5.00pm (ACST) yesterday.
It is alleged he then crashed the car into a tree near Amoonguna.
He was later arrested at the Alice Springs Show.



So.. we can all guess what race this 12 year old boy was? Who else in Alice that is 12 would pinch a cop car?

POLICE have charged a 49-year-old man with murder in relation to the stabbing death of a 47-year-old man in a remote NT town.
The incident happened in the community of Ngukurr, about 300km southeast of Katherine on Saturday.
The alleged offender has been remanded to appear in the Katherine Court tomorrow, Tuesday 9 July 2013.



Any guesses what the race of the offender was

AN "erratically driving" motorist has allegely thrown a rocks and a wheelbrace - twice - at police after a chase through a remote Territory town.
Oenpelli Police, based in Arnhem Land - 241km east of Darwin - eventually pulled a Taser on the 36-year-old man.
Senior Sergeant Mark Grieve said: "He thought better of it once he saw that".
Sen Sgt Grieve said the man was allegedly erratically driving the Ford Falcon XR6 through the town on Thursday evening.
"A pursuit ensued but it terminated soon after - a couple of seconds - because it was a danger to the public," he said.
"The vehicle of interest turned around and drove directly at the police vehicle and swerved to miss it and then stopped.

The Law Council of Australia says governments should be required to set and meet targets for reducing rates of Indigenous incarceration.
The council and the Australian Bar Association are meeting with National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services representatives in Darwin today to discuss the high imprisonment rates.
Law Council president-elect Duncan McDonnell says that since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody in 1991, Indigenous imprisonment rates across Australia have almost doubled.
He says the situation is particularly serious in the Northern Territory.
"Notwithstanding that we have a higher proportion of Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory, we have a higher proportion again of imprisonment of indigenous Australians," he said.
"The problem is worse in the Territory than it is elsewhere in Australia."



Perhaps if these boongs'd quit breeding and making trouble we wouldn't have to lock them up and waste our $ on them!
O.k keep them out of Gaol, then : sterilise them, fertiliser factory, bio-diesel plant!

A WOMAN has allegedly stabbed a man in front of drinkers - then walked away - outside a popular Darwin city bar.
The incident happened about 6.50pm outside Shenannigans, on Darwin's Mitchell St, in the nightclub precinct.
The man fell to the ground outside the entrance to the pub and was attended to by bar security staff.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and treated the man for stab wounds.
"He went into cardiac arrest," said St John Ambulance operations manager Craig Garraway.
Paramedics fought desperately to save the man, giving him CPR all the way to Royal Darwin Hospital, but he died from his injuries.    He was 35-years-old. His name is yet to be released by NT Police.

A 19-year-old woman was arrested over the stabbing.


On the web site version it doesn't mention race but in the news paper version I read today it stated that the pair were having a row over what food to eat and the "indigenous" and "scruffy looking people" were involved.

Who else would stab an aquaintence in cold blood in Darwin over a dispute regarding food?

Besides why won't police release his name ? Because it is culturally insensitive to have "voices or images of dead people" in media for the Abbos and other mumbo -jumbo!
